10 digit or 7 digit dialing

We've been 10 for a long time - Philly area. I actually thought everyone was 10.

We have 11 digits here in the UK, 6 digits if it is within your area code (that is quite local though, our nearest town has a different area code which is 20 minutes away.)

I am in the KC area so we have both...before you could call to KC Kansas area without an area code from KC Missouri, but now if you are calling from 1 state to the other you have to use the area code (still local call) but within the state no area code needed.

I automatically dial 11 digits. Yes, 11. 10 + the 1 for long distance.

We live in an area that not many towns are NOT long distance. Its just too hard to remember which ones needed the 1 and which didn't. The calls go through with the 1 whether you needed it or not, so its easier to include it. If you omit it and need it, the call doesn't go through.

Both. I can do some local with only 7 digits and need 10 for some other local tolls. Kind of odd but it works.

10 digit here in NE Ohio.
Years ago (1996) they rearranged our area codes and added new ones, then switched us all over to 10 digit dialing (2000).

We are 7 in California. I thought 10 digit was only for dialing outside of your area code.

West Virginia is only 7 right now, but we're supposed to be getting used to 10.

I've read a few articles that differ-- some say that we're getting a new area code (so we get to have TWO instead of just one! ;) ) and they're not going to change it by area.. so my parents would have the 304 and if DH and I got a new phone, we'd get the new area code maybe.. which would make 10 digit dialing necessary.

Other articles state that they're going to cut the state in half and whichever half gets the old number, doesn't have to change their number.. just the people who get the new area code.

No idea how it'll work out.

10 digit dialing here and its been that way since 96 or 97.. I know I had my license at the time.

We have had 10 here for a very long time.

Was traveling this weekend and asked the desk clerk at the hotel what they had and she looked at me like I was crazy

I have never heard it referred to as 10-digit dialing. My friend works as a concierge at a hotel. whenever I've gone to visit her, I hear her tell Americans, "You have to enter the area code too." For Europeans, since they have weird country codes, she has to explain, "You have to add a 1 first, (even if it is not written with the phone number,) then enter all the numbers."

10 for all calls. In just our household we have 2 different area codes. The house phone and DS's cell phone are 410, and the rest of our cell phones are 443. My mom's cell phone is 410 and my dad's is 301. They live about 20 minutes from us.

When I lived in the Philly 'burbs it was always 10 digits. So when I moved here and people asked for my phone number, always gave the full 10-digits and people thought I was weird. Finally got used to giving just the 7-digits...

10 digits to KC, MO. 7 digits to the KS side of the metro area. You always have to know what side of the state line you're calling around here.

We're in NJ too but we only use 7 digits. We use 10 when making a long distance call.

10 for years now. In Chicago...

Mikeeee

10 in the two area codes 610/484 here, but only 7 in the neighboring 717. It confuses me if we have to use our parents phones and I don't think they "get" that we dial ten all the time.

7 here in CT. However, the next town East of me is in a different area code and if I want to call someone that lives in that town, I do need to dial the 10 digits but it is still a local call.

I live 3 miles from the state line. If we are calling in local in SC we can use 7 digits if we are calling Charlotte (3 miles away) it is long distance and 10 digits. Charlotte has mutiple area codes in the city so they all have 10 digit dialing.
