10 Days in October: Argle-Bargle or Foofarah? UPDATED: POSTS #984 & 995!!!

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: I agree!! They really need a new preshow. RnRC is one of my favorite rides, but DH and I can't help but crack up every time we hear Joe Perry say, "You know how we feel about our fans." What acting talent!!;)

Oh yeah, I can just imagine how they feel about their fans, especially the young ones. ;) We laugh at that part, too, but I find that mixed in with the laughter is some Perry Pity - poor guy, he should try to be more like The Edge and just not say anything at all!

And I'm so with you on the drink menus! They should be expanding our beverage choices, not restricting them. Don't they know we LIVE for our little alcohol-laden trips to WDW? The kiddos are old enough to enjoy the pool without Mom and Dad in there with them, so we thoroughly enjoy a nice cold beverage at poolside. :thumbsup2

The resort drink menus were a real let down this year. :sad2:

This is true for me too. And that 'stupid' line... :rotfl: :lmao:

I had no idea that this could be a shared affliction! Perhaps we can get a support group going for this, too? ;)

Hey Nancy...It worked!!!!! :yay: :yay: :yay:

The sorcerer's hat has provided me with inspiration - at our Potter Party this summer I'm going to make Wizard Hat cupcakes, and I'm going try to make my hats look just like this one! I'll warn you all right now, though, not to expect much. Artistically speaking I'm a real dud - I can't even draw a straight line with a ruler. That's a special kind of stupid, wouldn't you agree?

Oh Brenda, PLEEEEEEEEEEASE tell me you're going to come back and post pics of the cupcakes - pretty please with sugar and a cherry on top? :yay:

I'll see what I can do. First I have to figure out where to find fondant...and then I have to figure out how to use fondant...and then I have to try to decorate.

It's conceivable that my wizard hat cupcakes will end up looking like a Ralph Wiggum science project. :lmao:

BTW - I've posted my sticky toffee recipe on my shrubbery thread if anyone is interested in having it. Just follow the link my friends, just follow the link. :goodvibes

Ooh! May I be a "photo liaison" with the Other Lori, since I arrive the day before she leaves? I'll take a photo of her with a squishee drink. I'm sure I'd have no trouble finding you for a similar photo pose, and I could put them up on my trip report.

Okay, now that sounds like a plan!! Those squishee drinks sound fabulous! I'm so slacking on my planning for this trip (probably because of the grandparents accompaniment;) ) but I'd love to try to work that out. Let's just say I'm planning on a LOT of time at the WS!:drinking1

Everytime I read "cheesesteak" as "cheesecake" - get excited then realise I'm wrong:rolleyes:

Fab photo again - we have to ride using parent swap so it would seem really sad and embarrassing buying a photo with just me on it:rolleyes1 - I've never seen the Rockin photo before - its cool:cool1:

While you two are having fun I wanna know what the Grimace is doing?:confused3 - scratching those cards I guess;)

Well as we get closer to October we will definitely have to see what we can arrange! :thumbsup2

Every time I type cheesesteak I have to doublecheck myself to make sure I didn't type cheesecake by mistake! :lmao:

I'll let you know what Grimace was up to...you just have to wait for it. ;)

Thanks again for reading!! :flower3:

Sunday, October 22nd - The Names Have Not Been Changed to Protect the Impatient, the Uncooperative, or the Purple.

There's nothing quite like a lazy Sunday afternoon at the resort pool - just you and your lovey drowsing in the sun while 457 of your closest DVC friends hang out on their balconies and pretend to talk on their cell phones while surreptitiously taking pictures of people snoring in the sun. Let's just make sure we have everything we need before flashing some dimpled butt cheek.

Water?

Check.

Strategically positioned lounge chair covered with 23 towels?

Check.

Duck repellent?

Quack, I mean check.

You think that last entry is a mistake, do you?

We actually took this picture the following morning on our way to AK, but this duck was hysterical (you'll notice that your doting author refrained from using something predictable like 'quacked us up'). He would rest under a lounge chair and then suddenly get up and join a bunch of people in the pool - once or twice he showed up with a feathered friend, no doubt taking advantage of Disney's generous pool hopping policy.

I'd guess that Jay and I got about 90 minutes of pool, nap, butt cheek-flashing, duck-watching time in before we decided to head back to the villa and make ourselves presentable. You wanna see us all cleaned up in anticipation of our Extra Magic Hour(s) at the MK?

And now, in response to the astonishing level of interest shown in Grimace's afternoon adventures I will attempt to share with you her Downtown Disney dribs and drabs. I'm sure the prospect of an afternoon browse-and-shop thrilled Jon down to the tips of his steel-toed shoes, but marriage is all about give-and-take. He gets a week in Florida, she gets to make him shop...they each make the other suffer a little and both end up happy in the process.

I have no doubt painted my mom in something of an unfavorable light but that's what mothers and daughters do...at least I think that's what they do. Let me try to give you a sense of us...

When I was younger and I would ask my mom how I looked she'd always respond with, "fine."

This was not the answer I was looking for, so I told her that I wanted to know if I was pretty. Her response was, "You're cute...but sometimes you're just plain."

I have never forgotten that. Most mothers gush about how beautiful their children are - they don't think their kids are gorgeous, they know it. I can only speculate about how unpleasant the birthing process must have been back in 1969, because I apparently made a very bad first impression.

My mom is painfully honest, passive-aggressive, pessimistic, hard-working, conscientious, and generous to a fault. I don't want you to leave this trippie thinking that she's the squinty, eyebrow-less, vacation equivalent of Ebenezer Scrooge, because she's not all the time.

While spending the afternoon at DTD, the parents grabbed some lunch at Wolfgang "hockey" Puck Express - they supplied no photographic evidence of the meal and said only that it was "good" before handing over their receipts so we could keep a running tally of available dining plan credits for the week. Grimace bought Jon a really nice Mickey Mouse polo shirt because in her words, "when in the house do like the mouse." And then she bought Jason and me the Disney World cookbook - the one with all the recipes from WDW, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, etc... And those of you who were there in October know that the World of Disney had this promotion going - spend $65, get a free WDW throw. I had looked at it earler in the week, but when I asked the CM to take it out of the packaging I wasn't thrilled with the material - it was pretty cheap, to tell the truth, so I opted to spend my money elsewhere. But Grimace saw the throw and thought I'd love to have it and so made it her mission to spend enough so that she could give it to me.

And that's the kind of person my Grimmy is. :flower3:

Pool hopping ducks? I love it ! :rotfl2: And I thought they only monopolized the Wilderness Lodge pool. You know, some people really get upset with ducks swimming in the pool, so maybe you could market some of your duck repellant to generate some extra cash for your next trip.

Your mother sounds like an interesting person, and somewhat of a challenge to love. I can see why you aren't terribly close! I do hope she never asks you if she's starting to look older, or if she ever acts senile at times. She might be sorry she ever said you were plain!

I'm glad she got you the throw. That was a nice gesture. I hope when you use it, it will bring back a few good memories of your trip.

hmmmm...where's the cheesesteak?

Everytime you mention DVC, it makes me more and more anxious to go for our first visit.............Summer 2008! :scared1: It can get here fast enough! Are you and Jay planning a 2008 trip?

Anyway, another great installment!

Sunday, October 22nd - The Names Have Not Been Changed to Protect the Impatient, the Uncooperative, or the Purple.

And now, what you've all been waiting for: the over-hyped story of one woman's misguided attempt to purchase family harmony with a greasy sandwich.

Dinner...oh dinner. Oh, wherefore art thou dinner?

I wrestled with this question during the the six-month dining reservation change-and-guess-and-cancel-mixathon that begins with the 180-day ADR window. It really sucks trying to make dining plans for other people, especially when those people say things like, "Oh, we don't care where we eat. We'll be happy with whatever you choose."

And initially I did choose our ADRS using my own fabulous judgement and all was right with the world. But then I started to think (always a mistake), and I fell right into the trap of trying to make everyone happy instead of simply telling them that if they didn't eat their meat they wouldn't get any pudding.

When you guys find out what I did - I'm probably going to end up being shunned. First I admit to not watching parades and live shows, and now I'm going to tell you about the ADR that I let get away.

For this Sunday evening I originally had a dinner reservation for the four of us at...

wait for it...

...

Le Cellier.

Jason and I were keen to try it and I had read so many good reviews of the restaurant here at the DIS that the flexibility of the Dining Plan seemed like the perfect opportunity for us to give it a go. And my parents like steak but there are also other choices for them like salmon and...stuff. Once finished with dinner we could just hop the monorail over to the MK and enjoy Wishes and some late-night fun with Mickey and Company.

But here's what happened: sometime in September while I was recovering from my second surgery of the year and dreaming of WDW, my mom said to me, "Brenda, we can have steak any time. I want to have dinner at the Magic Kingdom. Is there someplace we can go that I can get a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich?"

Does anyone else notice that her request still includes steak???

I was flying higher than a kite from all that percocet - there's no other explanation for the seeming reasonableness of her request. Allow me to share some advice: Don't change your ADRs while taking narcotic pain killers...it will only lead to heartache, and quite possibly, heartburn.

As I think back on this somewhat distorted conversation with my mom, I'm struck by the fact that her idea of dinner at the MK is a cheesesteak sandwich. Had my brain been working at it's usual speed I would have at least suggested that we give Liberty Tree Tavern a try - we've got the dining plan, woman; let's get a little bang for our buck!

The result of all this was that I cancelled the Le Cellier ADR and got us in to the Plaza for dinner that night - specifically so that she could have her cheesesteak sandwich. I'm just that nice. ;)

As I mentioned before, this Sunday was EMH at the MK - it was crowded...our ADR was for 6:50PM. Although I got us to the podium with about 10 minutes to spare we waited nearly 30 minutes before being seated in the dining room. I can't stress how important ADRs are if you really want to eat somewhere - I lost count of the number of people who walked up to the podium to ask for a table only to be told that the restaurant was booked solid.

My mom, by the way, doesn't really like to wait. I am my mother's daughter because I'm not known for being patient, either. But I do understand that at a teeeny little place like the Plaza on a busy night at the MK you will have to wait for your table. It's important that people chew their food thoroughly and take the time to digest it - we shouldn't rush them because a reversal of fortune, whether in the restaurant or on the sidewalk or in a line queue, is really a shared disaster.

Jason and I amused ourselves during the wait by watching my mom's lips grow thinner and thinner while she heaved her shoulders with dramatic, long-suffering sighs punctuated with occassional eye-rolling. We don't have children but I think my mother became the oldest living teenager ever that night.

Once we were seated we all agreed that the Plaza is a charming little place, styled like a turn-of-the-century ice cream parlor - I always think 1904 World Fair for some reason when I'm here. The menu choices were nothing spectacular, although the desserts were quite tasty - save room if at all possible. The service was fine and the food was decent, but I don't think that eating here was a wise use of a Dining Plan table service credit.

You want to see the sandwich that started it all?

DSC01288.jpg

THAT'S NOT A CHEESESTEAK SANDWICH - THAT'S A RUEBEN!!!!!!

The Grimace just pulled a Bait and Switch on me, which is illegal in most states.

"I thought you wanted a cheesesteak sandwich; that's why we changed the reservation and came here for dinner."

"I know, but it just didn't sound very good. Besides, you really have to go to Philadelphia for the best cheesesteak sandwiches."

I suggested that we could have ordered the sandwich to go and had a picnic dinner in Liberty Square, which is modeled after 18th-century Philadelphia, but she wasn't having any of it.

You know what I learned from this? I don't need a child...I've already got one. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Coming soon - Day 6...EMH at the Animal Kingdom, a F&W Festival drive-by eating, a mini DIS-meet with two of the nicest English citizens we've ever met, Plankton sets his plans in motion, and dinner at Victoria & Albert's!!!

OH MY GOODNESS!!!

Yes, you know what it is like to have a child, only worse, because you can ground a child or teenager!

So are y'all going to try LeCellier on your next trip? If you do, make sure to let us know how you like it. I want to go there on our next trip........

Well, I guess she DID buy the cookbook for you...........and that beautiful throw.

I have many stories about my mom that are similar to yours, so I feel your pain. That said, I know that your mom is probably a very nice person, as you would think about my mom. I guess all we can say is we love our mothers like only daughters can!:rotfl:

You know what I learned from this? I don't need a child...I've already got one.

Amen, sister. My Dad's the Grimace. We call him Cowboy. Because he won't take off his cowboy boots. Even in San Diego. At the beach. Maybe it should be Cowboy Grimace. :)

So we're leaving for Vegas tomorrow -- we'll say hi to Grimace in passing.

Brenda,
Yup, the May trip is all about the anniversaries...it is my in-laws celebrating their 40th and us our 4th, (and now that I remember it, we did go over this in your food trippie, sorry.):confused3
I am still on the fence about writing my own report, so we'll see.
I did go to the wonderful pre-trip report... wish it was a week or so earlier:) or we were there a week later...my DS:darth: who cared less about Star Wars weekend last year when we were there, now can't get enough of it...go figure.
Ready for the next installment.:coffee:

Aww, don't feel bad, Le Cellier sucks, really.

Okay, that was a total lie, but I was trying to make you feel better.

At least you weren't one of the people who eat at the McDonalds Outpost at Epcot during F&W.

Make that ADR for Le Cellier on one of your future trips post haste!!:scared1: You mustn't miss out again! You must be the best daughter out there to change that ADR.;) I hope she enjoyed her Reuben anyway.

Your story about the exchange between you and your mom while you were young made me laugh and almost cry at the same time. It brought back a memory of my mom that I'll also never forget. I was a freshman in high school and tried out for the cheering squad. (This was so many years ago I shudder to actually write how many years it was:sad2: ) I made the JV squad and came rushing in the door as excited as I could be. Me: "I made it!!!" Mom: "Really? I never thought you were that good."

Okay, my Mom loves me more than anything in the world, but those remarks stick with ya, you know what I mean?! Good thing Mom doesn't read these boards; she'd kill me for telling that story!

Can't wait for more!
