10 Days in October: Argle-Bargle or Foofarah? UPDATED: POSTS #984 & 995!!!

Sunday, October 22nd - And Whatever You Do, Don't Look Back!

Before parting ways, Jay and I made sure that the parental unit knew how to get to Downtown Disney using WDW's ultra-modern, environmentally friendly transportation system known in these parts as the coal-burning bus.

We walked them to the Beach Club bus stop, which is under a long, shady portico that has a sufficiency of nice benches for guests to better enjoy their protracted wait times, and bade them a fond yet shamelessly exuberant farewell. I felt a little guilty about leaving them to their own devices a mere 24-hours after their arrival but I am my mother's daughter and too much togetherness has never been a good thing.

In my family the prevailing attitude has always been something like this: I love you and I'd do anything for you, but I don't want to be around you all the time. We don't call each other every day; we don't see each other on a regular basis; and, there is no obligatory family dinner on weekends. We love each other, but we love our personal space and independence just a little bit more.

So perhaps some of you can understand why my heart was so much lighter as Jay and I skipped hand-in-hand to the MGM boat dock on Crescent Lake.

Wanna see some happy pictures?

Here's the Yacht Club Resort and the marina where you can rent boats and other fun water-related things...like bigger boats. This is also the area that you will depart from if you're ever lucky enough to snag an Illuminations Cruise. Just for reference, Jason and I have not been that lucky - yet.

Look, it's the Beach Club! Isn't it pretty? And look at the lovely white sand beach...so peaceful, so uncrowded. One of these days we should try lounging there...just for a change of perspective.
DSC01273.jpg

Check it out - the Shipwreck Waterslide for Stormalong Bay! One of these days, if I ever conquer my fear of waterslides, I'm going to try it.
DSC01272.jpg

J&B waiting on the Friendship to give us a ride over to MGM. Behind us you can see SeaBreeze Point - a nice shady gazebo area that a lot of people use for small weddings and other private functions. When it's not in use people are free to pull up a seat and relax here to their hearts' content. You can also see a part of the Boardwalk behind us.
DSC01271.jpg

Ahhh, success! Not only did the Friendship arrive but we were able to nab those highly coveted outside seats on the back of the boat!
DSC01276.jpg

We love the boat ride over to MGM - it's relaxing and the scenery is great. You get to see the Swan and Dolphin (Swolphin) up close, and you get a nice, slow drive-by of the Boardwalk Villas.

MGM is not our favorite park at WDW by any stretch of the imagination, but there are certain aspects of it that we really enjoy and some of our favortie rides do happen to be housed there. Jay and I are not big "show" people - some of you may be horrified to know that we've never seen a live performance of anything at Walt Disney World, unless you count accidental exposure, like the Japanese drummers who happened to be doing their thing one afternoon while we were Kaki-Gori-ing. We don't even do parades, except in very rare circumstances.

Based on all of that heretical information I just supplied you with, this next picture may seem odd. But I thought it was really cute with the Mickey topiary and I asked Jay to get a shot of it.
DSC01280.jpg

He's painting the sign...isn't that just too cute? I'm a sucker for this kind of stuff.

Once inside the park, Jay and I always make an immediate bee-line for Tower of Terror and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. The wait time for ToT was about five minutes and I'm not sure we even waited that long before the pre-show in the library started.

Oooooohhhhhh, scary!
DSC01279.jpg

This is my favorite ride at MGM, and it's tied for first overall at WDW with Expedition Everest. I love the winding walkway through the garden up to the lobby of the hotel and I could spend hours gawking at all the details in the lobby and the library. And the walk through the boiler room to the service elevators, where it's so dark you can barely see, is very creepy indeed. Talk about atmosphere!

Jason and I love to buy the overpriced novelty pictures of us and our fellow thrill seekers looking really stupid on these rides.

1688.jpg

After this ride Jay and I found out that you have to purchase two 5x7 photos or one 8x10 or some other even more silly combination...like 8 wallet-sized photos. Who the heck wants those? This isn't high school; we're not going to hand these out to our co-workers when we return to reality next week.

We were discussing this with each other the way some people discuss their investment strategies.

"I like the picture but we don't need two."

"Yeah, I know. And an 8x10 seems kind of excessive, even though we are having fun. Besides, my under-arm flab is noticeable enough as it is, we don't need an 8x10 drawing everyone's attention to it."

"There's nothing wrong with your arms that a little resistance band work wouldn't clear up. Too bad your mom's not normal, we could give her the extra picture as a souvenir of how much fun we were having without her and Jon."

At this point the CM behind the counter told us a secret.

If you want 5x7s but don't want to purchase two 5x7s of the same shot, you can ride again and buy two different 5x7s. Even better, when you choose this option, you don't have to wait in line again to ride. We've never heard of this wonderful, miraculous, magical money-making scheme. But we're interested - very interested. Oh yes, if you have swampland for sale and it comes with a commemorative photo sign us up.

She said this is an option at every WDW theme park ride that provides photo service, but I'm here to tell you that it was never offered to us again during the length of our visit.

Coincidence or the Grimace Factor? You decide.

We received a personal escort to a hidden door, where a bellhop CM walked us through a back hallway - guess where we came out... go on, guess!! Right at the service elevator! They had just filled up an elevator and told us we were first in line for the next one, and hey, would you like to be on the left or the right side, the front or the back?

By this time there was quite a line in the boiler room for the ride and I actually felt kind of conspicuous jumping ahead of all those other guests, who were definitely giving us the giant eyeball once-over. But I have to tell you guys, it was so much fun and we felt so special, and look, we even got this cool picture:
DSC01277.jpg

And then we rode a second time and this picture made it twice as good:
1689.jpg

I don't know what cracks me up most...Jason and me; the crazy-corkscrew-hair lady seated next to me; or, the guys in the back row performing YMCA. All I know is that we still laugh ourselves silly every time we look at this picture.

And that's what we call good times...without the Grimace. ;)

:rotfl2: That is CLASSIC!!!! I love the guys doing YMCA!! :rotfl2:

I would like a single plum, floating in perfume, served in a man's hat

Guy, do you know the lyrics to Baby on Board? :lmao:

Happy Birthday, Grimace!

Go ahead. I dare you to tell her that a bunch of Internet wackos wished
her a happy birthday. :woohoo:

I totally plan on telling her as soon as she makes it home from Las Vegas. She left on Sunday and won't be back until Friday - unless she hits a huge jackpot, in which case we'll never see her again!

I'm with you girl! I had "perfect" vision up until about 10 years ago..or so I thought. Started out with glasses to see far, then contacts because I was too vain to wear glasses. Then needed reading glasses to read and contacts to see far away. I decided to have the lasik surgery about 5 years ago which corrected my distance but now I need trifocals for everything else. :3dglasses (always wanted to use that smilie).

Now I'm 10 years older and my vanity has been flushed away in the toilet. As my niece told me last week, "Aunt Nancy, you're too old to be cute anymore".

Ahh, out of the mouths of babes.

Sometimes I think the vision change is harder for people who didn't have to grow up wearing glasses. I'm too far gone for Lasik but even if I weren't I'd be too scared to have it.

Gotta love those nieces and nephews - they're brutal, aren't they? ;)

Mine are minus 6 and minus 7. I'm not sure which way the scale goes, so I don't know if that's better or worse than you. I used to have a really weird and stressful recurring dream I called my Giant Contact Dream. In the dream my contacts got dried out and they became really big. Like half dollar size! If I soaked them in solution they might become small enough to fit back into my eyes, otherwise I would be blind and helpless. In this dream I was always trying frantically to shrink them down to normal size. Is that freaky or what? I think this dream was my equivalent of the dream other people have of being naked in public! :rotfl2:

I think for nearsightedness the scale goes up - the last time I asked my doctor told me minus 20 was legally blind. So if I understand the method, your vision would be 20/(600)or 20/(700) depending on the eye.

Mine is 20/(1300)... the bottom number is supposed to be the power of the correction to bring eveything back into focus. I wonder if they do it the opposite way for people who are far-sighted?

BTW - if anyone here knows better please feel free to post your information. I'm always on the lookout for a chance to better edumacate myself!

Kay your dream makes me want to laugh and it totally creeps me out! :lmao:
If I have one overriding fear it's of going blind. We have a history of macular degeneration in the family - on my dad's side (which is where the blind-as-a-bat gene comes from) they live to a ripe old age and lose their vision in the process. I've got my fingers crossed that NIH is working on a bionic eye that will soon be available to the vision-impaired public. ;)

Another great installment:thumbsup2

Cant believe this is post 326 and we're only on day 5:lmao: - I bet half of those are mine telling you to get a move on and get typing!:rotfl:

Cant believe you dont do the live shows:scared1: - or the parades:scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

Great photos of ToT:rotfl2:

That ToT photo is classic!:rotfl2: That is so cool that you can go back on with no wait for another picture. I'm tucking that little tidbit away for future reference.;)

And Happy Birthday to Grimace!:bday:

I thought I'd see the two of you skipping! :rotfl2:

This is my favorite ride at MGM, and it's tied for first overall at WDW with Expedition Everest.

TOT is one of my favorites too. In May 05, BIL and I went 5 times in a row. Obviously zero wait-time.

Besides, my under-arm flab is noticeable enough as it is,

We call that "Bingo-Arm" around these parts.:lmao:

Even better, when you choose this option, you don't have to wait in line again to ride. We've never heard of this wonderful, miraculous, magical money-making scheme.

What if you don't want picture #2? Can you go again? And again, and again until you find a good picture?:lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao: Hmmm...quite the scam I'd say.

And looks like the two people next to them on our left were trying to do something themselves.

Thanks B. We're expecting much more tonight since we know you'll have plenty of time to yourself.:surfweb:

:offtopic:

The cover art has been released for both the US and UK versions of Harry Potter 7!!!! :yay: :yay: :yay:

I love trying to glean clues from the cover art, and Voldie Moldie is on the US version....creepy!!!!

I can't wait until July 21st!!!!! :cheer2:

Hi Karen - hope your nose is feeling better! If half of the posts belong to you then the other half have gotta be mine. At this rate I'm going to break 500...:scared1:

I know...we're Disney anomalies. Ever since I was forced to sit through the Electric Parade at Disneyland when I was 15 I have been anti-parade...they just really get on my nerves. It's obviously a character flaw.

And Happy Birthday to Grimace!:bday:

Thanks for the birthday wishes for the Grimace - I'll be sure to let her know! ;) We're going to try that picture option again just to see if it's really something they offer or if we just got lucky.

Do you mind my asking - when in October will you be at WDW?

Hi Nancy - thanks for your great comments! I will do my best to post another update tonight...kinda depends on how things play out at work today. Will my spirit and creative fire be further crushed by the boots of senior management? Tune in later to find out!

By the way... how do you quote someone mulitple times in a response like you did? I can't figure it out!!! :headache:

Do you mind my asking - when in October will you be at WDW?

I don't mind at all! Right now we're booked at OKW from Oct. 7-12. I've been completely overanalyzing this trip, so it's subject to change!;) That's Columbus Day week, and I'm a bit nervous about the crowds, especially considering the grandparents probably won't do well with heat and crowds. Hey, I tried to talk them into the second week in December and it was a no-go, so they need to live with it! I'm trying to minimize the kids missing school.

Are you there at the same time? If you are, I'll be the one waltzing around the WS with a drink in each hand. If you see me, please say hello!:thumbsup2

On a purely selfish level I am very disappointed... we're just going to miss each other. Jay and I arrive at BCV on 10/15 and are checking out on 10/25.

Tell you what...you snap a happy drink picture in the WS and post it in your trip report once you get home and I'll do the same. Won't it be a hoot if we end up posting the same picture!! ;)

I am. Horrified that is. Shame on you.:scared1: (that's me being horrified)

I can totally relate to this, I love my family but I don't want to live in their pockets, especially if I were to go on vacation with them (I never have)!

Hilarious! My DH would say that about my mother too! :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

First, I did NOT know that you could skip the line for a 2nd photo!! I totally have to try that on every ride that has the photo op! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2
Second, I thought the guys in the back of the elevator were vogue-ing until you mentioned they were doing the YMCA! :lmao: :rotfl:

And lastly, I KNOW about the cover of HP!! :woohoo: I saw it this morning! I was never good at deciphering them though. That darn J.K Rowling sure does know how to keep a secret!! :rolleyes1

Hey there Disneyland Mama! Haven't seen you around lately - hope everything's been OK. :goodvibes

Is that picture great or what? How could anyone on that elevator not buy this? :lmao:

Thanks for popping in!

Hey B! I've been here the whole time, I'm just lurkin'! :rotfl: You TR is such a riot, I'm usually in tears from laughing so hard, I can't possibly post without quoting your entire installment! :lmao:

It's great.... carry on, girl. ;) You're on FIYAHHHHH!!:woohoo:

 :faint: Really? Wow. I can't believe you've never caught Off Kilter
performing, or the various Streetmosphere acts (World Showcase Players
in Epcot or Streetmosphere in MGM).

Jason and I love to buy the overpriced novelty pictures of us and our fellow thrill seekers looking really stupid on these rides.

ROFL! I love those! My favorite in the first picture is the woman by herself
screaming her heart out. And yes, the second picture, you struck paydirt!
The corkscrew hair woman has the best expression, and those YMCA guys
remind me of when I participated the YMCA thing on Splash Mountain.
It's great when you have a full boat of willing participants. ;)

See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil works great, too. I'd be up for that. :thumbsup2

But I think I really enjoy that little girl, bottom left corner. Invariably, I've
been on ToT and Rock n' Roller Coaster with people who appear completely
nonchalant in the photo! I call that the "Sunday driver" pose.

I think it would be awesome if the people in your photos found themselves
in your trip report. ;)
