Heather - have you been watching Chelsea Flower show this week on tv?

I have a huge list of plants that I now want:rolleyes1

It's been quiet the last few days ... I guess everyone is gearing up for Memorial Day weekend. :confused3

We're not going nowhere ... gas is $3.78 per gallon here and I have it from a reliable source that it's over $4.00 per gallon in the northern states where they make lots of cheese.

Too rich for my blood.

Just checking in, haven't read back yet. Won't be able to until tonight.

However, I wanted to let you all know that Andy is out of contact today. The power went out this morning because of the fires and so has the phone. Luckily he had the car charger for the cell phone with him and he is able to keep that going.

The power came on early this afternoon, but the phone is stil out. He just TM'd me again and said they won't have a land line until Friday afternoon. Therefore, he won't have a modem connection and won't be checking in with us.

He did say the fires are about 3 miles from their place, but luckily there is a lake in between them and the fires.

As I get updates from him, I will pass them along to you.

Already have seen over $4 here, heard rumor that we may hit $5 by this summer and they don't expect it to stablize until it is over $6. This guy on the Today show was saying he doesn't think that the Saudi's are holding oil back, he thinks that they are giving what they can produce because they are running out.

 to Andy and Hazel

I forget where you are...are you near Williamsburg?

Personally, I'd like to see historical, colonial type-stuff, but maybe Sean and Cath wouldn't....not sure if the "Brits" still hold a grudge for that little independence thing...:lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl2:

Were about 2 hours from Williamsburg. We are thinking about Williamsburg. I hope they like history cause that's about it for VA.

Six flags, williamsburg, DC and the beach!!!

Thanks. I wasn't sure about the beach. Scott is from the beach so definitely wants to go there but it is just soooooo different from the beaches on the cruise.

Williamsburg, Gettysburg, DC....Sean and I want to visit every state someday, his goal is also to see every state capitol. Of course we have to stop going to Disney all the time to do it.:rolleyes1

Well, you have a place to stay in VA!:thumbsup2

Lori,
First let me appologize in advanced because the guys are sooooo going to run with this questions but...
Isn't there a nice set of mountain ranges in VA? popcorn::

If this doesn't bring the Dawg out of the woodworks someone needs to call them

Yes. We actually live pretty much at the base of a mountain. The appalachain trail runs along the top of it. We want to take them up there on a few trails. Does that sound good?

Here are some general thoughts from a history geek who has been to Virginia in the past and can't wait to visit again ...

Williamsburg
Virginia Beach
Jamestown
Mount Vernon
Monticello
Arlington
Norfolk
Richmond
The James River Road Plantation tour (it was a gorgeous drive when we did about 10 years ago)
All American Civil War Battlefields (in itself an impossibility in one trip, but it's a dream of mine to have a battlefield tour vacation)
A winery tour

I'm tapped for the moment ... :goodvibes

Scott said Mt Vernon and I was like really? But if you say so, I'll go with it. Sean and Cath definitely want to go to a few wineries. I've never done the James River Road Plantation tour. We will have to look into that for ourselves.:thumbsup2 As for battlefields.........can Scott go with you when you return to VA? I'd rather stay home and clean hairballs out of all the drains.:rotfl2:

Oooh, I thought of some more ...

How about Roanoke? Is there anything there about the missing colony? That could be cool.

DC is always a great idea but that's going to take more than a day unless you just want to take them on a driving tour. I've been to DC twice now and still haven't scratched the surface of all that it has to offer.

Charlottesville ... I've always heard that they have a really nice historic district there with some great shopping and dining ... also some good wineries in that area I think.

You are thinking of Roanoke Island in NC. We have been there an seen the outdoor drama which is FANTASTIC!

We live about 1 1/2 hours south of DC and there is still so much we want to see. I'm not sure if you could ever see it all.

Charlottesville.......that's where we are. Just a few miles north. I love it here. You are talking about the downtown mall. It is very neat. I love going down there just to people watch. Charlottesville is a very artsy town and they have all kinds, not to mention it is a college town so that adds lots of flavor.

But there is a Roanoke Va. It is down near Virginia Tech. Beautiful area.

Jeff, next time you hear from Andy let him know that we are all thinking of him and Hazel and wish them well.:grouphug:

Gettysburg is in Pennsylvania - but definitely warrants a visit, especially if your hubby is a Civil War buff. It's an amazing and humbling place.

We loved Gettysburg as well.

The holocaust museum in DC is awesome, too. Depressing but awesome. Not for little kids, but awesome.

How about Kings Dominion?

Out of the parks here Olivia did choose Water Country USA. Maybe you all could meet us there for that day. I'll keep you posted.:thumbsup2

Paige,

when Jay and I were last in DC (summer 2003) we spent an entire afternoon at the Holocaust Museum and it was absolutely incredible - emotionally wrenching and strangely illuminating.

I know it's not possible, but I really think it should be mandatory for people to visit there. Not only to ensure that no one ever forgets it, but to remind all of us of the horror that people are capable of visiting on each over such inconsequential things as skin color, politics, national origin, cultural identity, and religious beliefs.

When I find myself making sweeping generalizations about someone I disagree with I always try to think of The Merchant of Venice and that speech that Shylock gives in the third act:

Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions; fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, heal'd by the same means, warm'd and cool'd by the same winter and summer as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? ...

At the end of the day we're all the same ... our individual differences make us beautiful and interesting but we're all members of the same human family. That's one of the things that the Holocaust Museum drove home most powerfully to me.

Sorry ... I'm getting down off my soap box now. :flower3:

If you want mountains, DH and I have the place for you. Our Appalachian mountains are very different that the mountains in the West but beautiful in a different way. We take them for granted, but many people find them breath taking. I think Lori will agree!

Have you ever been to the Virgin River Gorge outside of Las Vegas? We drove through there last summer and decided that it was a naked version of our mountains.:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
