My kids are supposedly being given work to do while on vacation. That is what we wrote the notes for. When we met their teachers prior to school starting, we told them about the cruise and their responses were positive. They just asked for a few days heads up before we leave to let them get stuff together for them.

It's the state and administration that seems to have problems in this case. Honestly though, I can't afford to take them in July or August. The price is double or higher! Well maybe not double, but it is significantly more expensive and why pay that premium if all it means is that i get a "form" letter from the principal in a month or two telling me my kids have unexcused absences.

Yeah thats like us---we had this planned for August to begin w/ and then found out the difference in price for Oct. -----so we switched ours--------------------------

Well, real life is already getting in the way. I just got a call from the clinic. Apparently my bloodwork is showing elevated liver enzymes. Gotta re-do it tomorrow.

None, that I can think of Nancy. The usual things like, emptying the fridge, last minute cleaning and ironing. BUT, Rick has this thing about switching everthing off. Couple of years ago, we came back to a freezer that had been switched off and the food had started to rot inside. It stank. And he tried to blame me.

Ooh - thanks for reminding me to clean out the fridge.... who KNOWs what will grow if I don't do that!

Leah is getting so excited, she giggled herself to sleep last night.

Stuart, while excited, will probably go through Roller Coaster Tycoon withdrawls. That boy has been playing non-stop since he got the game. He's determined to do two things for his theme park. 1) Make a Disney-Quality Fireworks show and 2) Build the Matterhorn. Cracks me up!

How cute!!! My girls haven't gotten excited too excited where they can't sleep yet, but Dave sure is getting excited (and it's his b-day today.... what a big kid!!)

As we were going to go get our Pizza for supper late yesterday afternoon
Nancy said you know if they call to have come in and sub tomorrow and its just for a half a day I might do it. My response was I would like it if you didn't. Just your luck with all the kids with coughs and snotty and runny noses you would pick up something and after thinking over she said I think your right. So last night she went on line to Subit and took her name off until we get back.

Well my girls are sick today------------Rachel had 101.7 fever and Hannah 102.2 @ 11:30 last night------------yeah!!!! Called Rachel's school to let them know she would be out and the first thing he said is "Have you had them tested for H1N1????????????????????" Michigan is out of the flu shots in our area--so we weren't able to get them like we wanted before we left
So hoping this will pass w/ just a minor thing in the next few days

Oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is TERRIBLE news! I will pray and hug and think of them that it's just a bug and they get better super soon. Make sure they go to the doc and if it IS the flu - get the Tamiflu anti-viral meds!

We just have DD packed. Elaine just told me to get the suitcases out for her at lunchtime.

We sent notes with out kids today to school formally notifying their teachers about vacation and the school secretary just called to inform us it will be an unexcused absence.

Oh well...

Did you tell them that they would be experiencing a "cultural event" - visiting other countries.... How crazy!!

She's just doing her job. If we didn't call and let parents know it would be that one parent who doesn't know the law asking (more like yelling) why we didn't let them know it wasn't cleared when they sent the letter.

My district "highly recommends" that employees take OUR vacations when kids are out of school. To encourage this they do not supply a sub for this. Union however stated that they can't make us take it then.

I am in the office today. I could start driving on Sat. I can see why now she did not want me too. The shoulder belt was uncomfortable. I came in since they were going to be here and I dressed professionally and it is not like my t shirt and flannel pants.

Different states have different laws/rules. A couple of Samantha's friends and their parents are going to WDW soon. They are taking 2 whole weeks and the principal called them and pretty much yelled at them for taking the kids out of school. They have 10 day passes and are driving to FL from Connecticut.

I actually sent the principal an email during the first week of school for Abby - since it's middle school and it's all new to me, I wanted to make sure she wouldn't get anything messed up if she left.

The principal called me back herself that afternoon and asked if she could come with us! So far, Abby has straight As (NEVER happened before in the history of her in school) so we want to make sure she keeps those and they have all said "no problem"! Different states = different rules (even the county we are in will have different rules to different Schools!!) She did tell me that we would get a form letter talking about her absences, but really not to worry about it (LOVE this principal!!)

Your post got me to write the notes for my girls too. I just took them up and delivered them to the schools. In Virginia, they get 10 total excused/unexused absences. It's pretty subjective. If the principal accepts your reason and believes that there is some educational value, then it is excused and they get to make up work. Our oldest is in 6th grade, so we think that this will be our last "school year" trip with them.

Like in St Thomas the butterfly garden is that something that can be done on our own or is it better w/ Disney. And in St. Maarten is the Sea World Explorer coral reef good for a 3yr old?
