How much do your points convert to? Does the 260 points you have completely cover the whole cruise?
You figure the maintenance alone on the points would be around $1,200 (using $4.50 per point on average). This wouldn't include any amortization of your buy-in. If it is today, about $2.00+, but we'll use $1.50, so another $400 roughly. That brings the total effective cost to $1,600 for the cruise.
Any money you would have to pay would be on top of the effective cost.
This wouldn't take into account the opportunity cost (i.e. you could rent those points for at least $10 each, probably closer to $12). If we use $11 per point opportunity cost for renting them, you are looking at $2,860. Now add the amount you had to pay on top of that.
A Cat 10 SPH for 2 people was only about $1,800-$1,900 for this cruise.
The one benefit given the economy is that if a cruiser, not using points, needed to cancel, they would be out nothing. If you need to cancel, you still have to pay your $1,200 for this year's maintenance.
So yes, you could cut the cost of your cruise down with DVC, but it isn't all that bad for those of us without DVC.
Not trying to ruffle any feathers, I can argue both the pros and cons of DVC. I'm personally trying to convince my wife into buying a block off the resale market.
