10/15/2011 - Taking the West by Magic!

That's excellent!

I never thought about how dark the room would be. Since Alex and I are in an inside stateroom, I'm sure it'll be pitch black. I'm thinking I might just bring a mini flashlight for us to use if we need to get up in the middle of the night.

We used to use one of those little pot lights, the one you hit to turn on (ha do they still make them :rotfl:) I need to find mine if not then we'll just have to use (my) Alex's mini flashlight too :3dglasses

I was reading earlier that there were no clocks at all while the Magic was transitioning from the propeller-clock to the iPod alarm clock. I am not sure if the new clocks have arrived yet, so a travel clock might be essential!

:scared1: I guess thats what we'll be doing. I always lose track of time on vacation :confused3 like I have no cares in the world :rotfl:

OK, I have a question...please don't laugh

Do we stay on the same time zone? Is that stupid to ask??? :confused3

Basically, will we have to be changing the time on our clocks around too much during the cruise?

Thanks :)

A good tip I found elsewhere on the DIS is to turn on the TV with sound off or lowered and set to the bridge view channel. I guess they set it to a starry sky for most of the night, and then you get to see the sun rise. Kind of a "Poor man's inside porthole."

I am conflicted about this--I want to fell like "I have no cares in the world" and lie in every morning, but I also want to be wide awake every hour that I can to take advantage of the ship and the ports. I'll probably do a little of both!

Our last vaca to the Outer Banks, I realized that I am getting old. I actually went to bed at a reasonable time and got up with the sun every day. :faint:

Hmmm, I was about to reply that there is a time change in Cozumel, but after looking at the Stateroom Navigator, I am not so sure! It reminds us in one place to move our clocks and watches FORWARD 1 hour the night before or the morning of arrival. But in another, it says that we need to keep to the ship's time, as it is different from the local time! :confused3

I'll leave this to the Castaway Club members.

ME too, you want to really relax but then you want to really get involved with everything on the ship and on shore ... Ahhh to have such choices :rotfl:

If it helps, DH and I are in our 20s, but we are on such an abnormal schedule. He works a 4:30am to 1:30pm shift at work, so we are usually up at 3 and in bed by 9pm. :rotfl: Yesterday, we felt so special, because we stayed up until 10pm and slept in until 7:30am.
So, even on vacation, I don't see us sleeping in too late. We'll probably catch a lot of the sunrises and be ready to leave the boat by 8.

Alicia, I love your new avatar picture!! Congratulations

I tend to be an earlier riser and earlier to bed, but we'll have to see how it works out this time. Usually, I'd go with Scott to the cabaret acts while the kids were in the clubs, then I'd be ready to hit the sack, especially on our last cruise where we always had to be up so early for excursions!

I'm looking forward to just relaxing and sleeping in a little bit!:cheer2:

Looking for some old navigators before I give you an answer....

I'm pretty sure the ship stays on the same time the whole cruise, however, when we're in Cozumel, we'll be an hour ahead of shore time because they're in Central time and we'll be on Eastern time. All of the other ports are also in Eastern so they don't change the ship's clock or dining times or anything.

So, if we have an excursion in Cozumel (through Disney) does that mean we don't have to worry at all about the time change? We'll just be where we have to be (according to Disney time) even though it is actually an hour behind there? Am I making sense? :rotfl2: Meaning, if we are scheduled for 9:30, then according to the ship time we still meet for the excursion at 9:30, but it is actually 8:30 there??

I think I'm paranoid...but I REALLY don't want to be left in Mexico because of a time change!! :rotfl:

Here's another question for the experienced cruisers: what is the expected or generally accepted dress code for embarkation? I wasn't planning on dressing up, I think comfort might win the day but I wonder if we will want to look nice for the embarkation photos.

Also, is it like the old Love Boat episodes where we thrown crepe streamers off the decks? What kind of party favors might I bring along?

If you're on a ship excursion, that's correct, they'll tell you where/when according to ship time to meet (you'll meet on board and the go to your excursion). If you're on a private excursion, you'll just have to remember that they are an hour behind, so if you book something, make sure it ends earlier!

Embarkation is definitely casual, a lot of people wear their swimsuits under their clothes so that they can swim and they may not be able to get into the rooms, and/or the suitcases may not have been delivered yet.

As for streamers, no, no streamers, they used to give out handled streamers so that you could wave them at the sail away party, but it's been spotty as to if they do that, pom poms would be fine though (you can't toss anything overboard, bad for the sea life). Also, if you're up on deck 10 when we actually pull away from the pier, the staff at PC come out to wave with big Mickey hands. :cutie:

Great questions. I had shirts made up with the cruise ship on the front with our names and the date of the cruise. So I think we are going to wear those. In other words, we are going casual.

As for the streamers and such...don't know...but I would like to know as well.

Alex is really hoping to catch up on sleep during the cruise. He never manages to get enough, so whenever we go on vacation, he sleeps in almost everyday.

Thank you! Alex is the one who wanted to turn our rings into a Hidden Mickey.:rotfl:

Man, just when I think I've got the trip figured out, other little things pop up!

I 'm glad everyone said that we can dress casual, because I will be driving an hour in the car to get to port, so I was planning to just wear comfy clothes. I figured it'd be a pretty laid back afternoon, anyways, aside from dinner that night. I will probably be wearing shoes that I can walk around in, because I'll most likely want to explore the ship!:)

Sounds like you've got a Disney husband there, he's a keeper!

One thing I love about the Magic, is that it's small enough that you can get to know it well in 7 days. The main decks to explore are 3, 4, 5, 9 and 10, the others are stateroom decks unless you're looking for the Edge which is on 2, or the big bucket of Bonine outside the Medical station which is on 1. 6, 7, and 8 are also all cabin decks. Make sure you take a look around the running track, I didn't until my last cruise, and it's cool, it goes through some machinery in the bow and you can see just how big the anchor ropes are!
