What an awful way to start a vacation! Pixie dust goes out to their family who must have been looking forward to this cruise and not expecting anything bad to happen.

So sorry to hear about the pin drama. You must tell all.

DS did have bronchotis and is now medicated so started to feel better yesterday. Now just have to make sure that he takes all of the medication. He also got contacts over the weekend so he's happy about that.

Have to get ready and head to work for a client who's to come in first thing this morning -- I'm betting they might turn up around 11am but have to be there just in case.

Fiona

Just wanted to echo my condolences to the family as well. What a shock that must have been. :sad1: I too, would like to learn more as details become available. Prayers /\ and Pixie dust .*.*.* heading their way.

Papa...love your new photo with Mickey! I am assuming that is you and Mama? We just missed seeing them when they were in Orlando and have not been any where near them while they are on tour. Lucky you! Dinner sounded yummy too, by the way!

Viking...good luck on the car wheelin' and dealin'! I hope you get the deal you want! Sounds like the one dealer is worth going to, even if it's an hour away! I have never heard of a discount for Auto Club and a voucher for fuel! GOOD LUCK and can't wait to see photos!

Have a great day ya'll!

Kathy and Mike - GREAT photo. You must have just done that this a.m. because I did not notice it last night. Looking forward to seeing you guys this summer.

Searched quickly this a.m. for some more info about CC but no one is talking. Perhaps by the time I return from work we will have more information. Still very upset over situation even though I am so removed from it and probably don't even know the people. I can't even begin to imagine what that poor family is going through.....

I still don't get the pin-thing :confused3
Ok, there are some nice pins available, but those things are made in in China and only cost some cents in production. Nevertheless people are willing to pay up to $16.99 for one :earseek:
I can understand buying them as a souvenir, I got a nice one with the ship and a MM-shaped starry sky behind it. I was very sad when I lost that one at Disneyland Paris - And I was extremely happy when Mike bought the same one during CruiseEars and mailed it to Germany. It still has a place of honour in a vitrine in our living room.
But collecting those things? Standing in line for them? Just because Disney says they're limited editions? No way!!! Or even having my cruise spoilt, because I didn't get one :confused3
But as stated before this must be a cultural thing ;)
Anja and I always are surprised again when we see what people are buying at WDW, on the ship or at other themeparks. And I clearly remember the gaping mouth of one of WDW's interviewers, who asked us a lot of questions on late afternoon when we were leaving the MGM Studios (Funny coincidence: We always get interviewed when we're at WDW. There wasn't one year so far, where they didn't get us :rotfl: ). This lady asked us the typical questions like:
-Wher do you come from?
-Is this your first visit to WDW?
-If not, how often have you been here before?
-Where do you usually stay?
-Where do you stay this time?
-Do you also visit other themeparks?
-If yes, which parks?
-What's your annual household income (A question an interviewer wouldn't dare to ask in Germany as this is kind of a taboo over here)?
All our answers made her just tick off boxes without ever lifting her eyes from her list - Until she asked: How much did you spend at the parks today? Upon which we replied (Remember it was late afternoon!!): '$2.50 for a Diet Coke.' Her head shot up, her jaw dropped, and after gulping very hard, she asked very slowly 'Didn't you buy any T-shirts, souvenirs, pins?' Which we declined. She then somehow lost her drive :teeth:
But I guess that's exactly the problem, that kept Disneyland Paris at the verge of bankruptcy right from the start: The unwillingness of us Europeans to spend money merchandise. When we were at DL Paris we saw less people carrying shopping bags in the evening than at WDW in the morning - Even though souvenirs, clothing and other merchandise is at least 30-40% cheaper than in WDW!!!
Needless to say that Pin Trading flopped completely at DL Paris ;)

Michelle,
vouchers for fuel are a very commoin incentive over here with gas prices at $7 a gallon. You can get them at your travel agency for booking a vacation, for subscribing to a magazine, etc.
The ADAC is the largest club in Germany with 15 million members. Only AAA and the Japanese AJF are bigger, but as the USA have a population of 285 million, Japan 123 million and Germany only 82 that's no wonder. McKinsey, German Public TV, AOL and our Gouvernment just made a survey about life in Germany. The ADAC came out as the most trusted institution nationwide. I've been a member since 1983. I use them for travelplanning as they offer free maps, they also offer free roadside assistance with an average response time of under 30 minutes, you can have you car checked once a year (Shocks, brakes, lights, etc). I received 10% on my last set of snow tyres, and other businesses offer good rebates as well: 15 million potential buyers call for good conditions ;) But I must admit that I was also surprised about the rebate for cars.
Talking about that other dealer: Even though we have the Autobahn a drive of 150 miles takes at least 90 minutes, and as the other dealership is in the Ruhr-Area which is more or less a cluster of a dozen major cities, it will be more like two hours.
I may even use the offer from that dealer to make my local dealer improve his offer ;)

Hi Guys Bette & Kim here..

We are at Castaway Cay, weather is very nice. We decided to stay on the ship today and relax. We just were able to get vouchers for the pin being released today, this whole pin issue is a major DISASTER !!! So is any thought of getting a t-shirt or hat. There are 2 other groups on the cruise and they do not understand the meaning of SHARE! . LOng story , we will post more on that later.

Very sad note for all us Disers, today we lost one of our Disers while at the beach at Castaway Cay. Do not know for sure but appears to have been a heart attack/ drowning ?? Very sad for everyone.

Tomorrow and Tuesday are sea days so we will be back in touch tomorrow with more info.

The only thing that would make this cruise better is to have you all with us.

Love & Hugs, Bette & kim

Guys, I'm going to say two things here, and we'll leave it at that.

1. We did loose a disboarder yesterday at Serenity Bay. While I (and several other disboarders) assisted in the resuscitation, we (all who were present) agreed that this is not our news to share. It is a tragedy, and while I and others present can speculate on the cause, none of us feel that this should be announced on this board by any of us. The person also has several other friends and family members who were travelling with them (some still on board) and if *THEY* wish to share what happened, it is their right to do so. Until then, I think we should leave this as "We lost a disboarder, it was a tragedy, it has touched the disboard community on this ship *VERY* deeply, and keep the family and friends in your prayers".

2. As I stated above, there are many other disboarders besides myself who were VERY attached to this tragedy in various ways. Do not PM people on this board, or e-mail people on this board looking for information. You will not get it. This information will either come from the family to this community (and the family is part of the community) or it will not come out at all.

Bette & Kim -- Peter & Jenn -- Dave & Ellen .... Get together and have a group hug from us. I am absolutely thrilled that you guys are together and enjoying such a memorable event. The pictures that Peter was able to send actually made my day. Actually brought a tear to my eyes thinking how much we miss being around you and of all the past fun we had.

Sorry to hear of the tragedy at CC and feel really bad for the family and friends. If all if us just take the time to say a little prayer and make up our minds to savor every minute .... we'll all be better off.

Mike & Kathy ... love that picture. What a fun trip that was. To think that they knew we were coming (hehe).

BTW

Thanks for the info, Jeff.
I like your attitude. I do the same each time I have to treat one of my coworkers in medical emergencies. Everytime after the action I'm approached by other coworkers inquiring about what happened. I always tell them to wait for an official bulletin from the patient or from Human Resources. But you know, curiosity is one of the strongest forces driving as humans ;)
Hugs to you and Jenn & try to enjoy the cruise in spite of the tragic incident

Tulirose (at least I think that is who posted that question)...go to the website for the PA State Parks (www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks) or give them a call at 1-888-PA PARKS (I did try calling them but was on hold forever so I had to give up)--I did speak to my girlfriend who camps up there all the time and she said that dogs are welcome at Promised Land and you will really like it up there. As for myself, my idea of camping is a Marriott or Disney Vacation Club!! We have friends who have been bugging us to go camping for years and they still haven't had any luck. I think that the only qualification is that the dog is on a leash at all times and can't go near swimming areas or inside buildings. Happy Camping!!

Peter...when you stop at Cuba, say hello to Fidel for us. You and him could share a cigar!!! Have fun Bette and Kim also!! When you meet Fidel, you better have Bette with you because if anyone could straighten him out, she could!!!

We are scheduled for a Department of Health inspection this afternoon and our grand opening of the Family Birthing Suites is scheduled for Thursday afternoon with the "live" opening on Monday, May 23rd! One project down and another one will start next month!!

papa...love the picture...say hello to Kathy for us and give Katie a kiss from us!!

Eric ... Also our EMS and most in PA have a policy of not releasing any names or specifics in any incident we respond to.

Its appreciated, and I know the power of curiousity. What I can tell you is this. Those people who need to know, already know. The other disboarders closest to the family have promised that they will post more details when the time is appropriate and that post is when the disboard community will get what details they get. Death is a very powerful thing, and while I know we are curious, the *MOST* important thing is to respect the privacy of those involved as difficult as it may be. I assure you the condolences have been seen by the family, they are very VERY appreciated and a strong source of support. But information beyond that isn't my right to share, and isn't ANYONE'S right to speculate on. When or If details come forward, it will be with and only with their approval. Right now they've said they'll post when the time is right, but it is still their right to change that. Please accept that, and realize you'd want the same thing if it was your friend or family member.

Also realize that those of us (both guest and crew) who were very tightly involved with the situation, have read the condolences, and been strongly moved and strongly appreciative of them. While no one involved can ever remember who has offered to do anything we need regarding the situation, all of us still appreciate it.

On a different note, we are not on Cruisetoberfest unfortunately however we leave June 4 west. None of our 11 DIS families seem to know how or what to organize. Can anyone help so we can have a great DIS time?

Judy our list keeper is Eric from Germany. aka Viking. He started the list and everyone sends him their info such as hometown, cabin number, any special occasion and such that he then puts on the list and emails the ones that sent the info.

A lot of our fellow cruisers spend time on the ship and shore together, but that is not a requirement. You can just greet other members on your list at the sailaway party and then go on your merry way. It is up to you.

Sometimes people bring something from their home state and give it to others or not. We design a logo for each cruise and then email it to people on our list and then everyone can find each other in the terminal and on the ship.

The main thing to do is to talk to one another on the boards here and then it will be more like a family reunion than just cruising with strangers. Mike

Thank you Jeff. You are right, of course.

WindyJudy - I think one of the keys of having a "great DIS time" is communication prior to cruising. The first time we cruised was in 2000 and there seemed to be only 2 other families from the DIS cruising then on that particular cruise. We knew of each other cruising but did not communicate much. One couple was Inkognito and we spent the sailaway party with them blowing bubbles off the back of the ship. We had fun and we never saw them again on the ship. And that was fine. The other family, I bumped into the wife during fire drill. And that was it. And it was fine too. The communication at that time was brief and not deep but it served its purpose in allowing us to meet two groups of people from different parts of the US.

Ahh, but our second cruise - which was our first 7-day cruise - that was an extra special cruise which turned into Cruisetoberfest I. There were a few DISers who thought it would be a great idea to make contact with fellow cruisers and reached out to others. First contact for me, I believe was approximately 9 months prior to cruise date. A cruise thread had been started and was going strong along with participation in Friday night cruise chats and special chat time on weekend mornings so we could communicate with our German cruise couple. Lots of joking around and bantering back and forth happened during those chats and on the thread.

We were hesitant, I'll admit, many of us were. Internet communication was new to us - "you're not an ax murderer, are you?" became a favored quote.

Some people were concerned about spending time with a bunch of strangers. But the beauty of this whole thing is that you WILL be on a cruise ship spending time with a bunch of strangers and as our RellingTwin stated - getting to know some of these strangers prior to the cruise may help to make it a little more enjoyable. And it does!

Some people we never saw again after sailaway party (if I remember correctly, some people never even showed up at it). Other people we would see all the time - we arranged to have dinner with fellow DIS'ers which turned out so great. On first cruise we had dinner with another family (non-DIS'ers) that DCL set us up with and while it was not awful, it was not great.

During the week of Cruisetoberfest, we would run into people that we "knew" and sometimes we would sit down and have a chat and other times we would just wave in passing. It was great fun rooting for a fellow DIS'er that we "knew" during the married couple game show. And when I was picked for WWTBM, I could hear a fellow DIS family rooting for me while on stage with blinding lights in my eyes (I was SO nervous). On Cruisetoberfest II, many DIS'ers were rooting for our friend, Eric, (aka Viking) as he sat in the hot seat for WWTBM and we went wild when he answered all questions correctly and won a cruise!

Things like this are going to happen anyway -- going to game shows, sitting next to people at pool or lunch time -- how much nicer it is when these people turn out to be people that you sorta "know".

Doesn't mean everyone is going to be everyone else's best buddy and hang out together. That's an unrealistic view, especially for people traveling with a large group already. Everyone respects everyone's desire to have their own vacation with their own family in their own way. But, I have to tell you too, some of these people felt like my family by the time we finally got to meet on Deck 10, 9/22/01, and cruising just wouldn't be the same without them.

Bringing gifts for one another, going on excursions together, dinners together and such, if it works out, is icing on the cake. But for me the more important thing is just meeting other people, even only briefly. I can be a shy, somewhat reserved, introvert IRL, especially with strangers, and breaking the ice meeting new people prior to cruise helps so much. Meeting people from all over the states and Canada and Europe is just so thrilling. No way would I have met any of these people if I had not the DIS boards as a catalyst.

That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

And writing this out, makes me realize that I have NOT been good with communicating on this thread. Partly because the cruise is (or was initially) so far off in the future and partly because time doesn't permit it for me this time around. So, writing this out reinforced for me that in order to allow this set of Cruisetoberfest people to get to know me, and for me to know them, I need to POST MORE OFTEN!!! :D

So, what IS the story with Friday night cruise chat? Does anyone go there anymore? I can't this weekend (or next come to think of it) but perhaps in June I will visit the chat room and find some Cruisetoberfesters there?

Thanks MaryJo. We are camping somewhere else (Three Pines near Hamlin) but we need a picnic area for a get together with family. Niece's house is too small, not much of a yard and SIL doesn't have new house yet. Two BIL's are also talking about coming up to check out area. I went to that website the other night and it is unclear about dogs in park. I think it is okay, however. It doesn't flat out say, no dogs in state parks (as it does in NYS). It says something about dogs in certain areas. I think we will be fine. If not, oh well.

Hey! Do you guys and Art and Cathy want to join us on Sunday? Details are not set in stone yet but we will be up in the area there, somewhere.

Fellow Survivor fans - I hear Sayville was rocking last night when they announced Tom as the winner! I love Ian but he really messed up big time. But I was rooting for them both. Glad Tom won, fellow Long Islander and all, but I really think Ian was played by Katie.

Judy,
just send me a short not to our Cruisetoberfest-Account (There's a link in my signature) and I send you a blank List you can use.
I can only second what the other posters said: It's simply great to have so many friends on board. You only have to allow for some time when walking the ship: You will usually meet people you know and the resultung chat may slow down your progress :rotfl:
Our first cruise and the following ones resulted in so many friendships that many of us are spending vacations apart from the cruises together.

Rosemary,
I would love to chat again, but even before the last cruise it was difficult to get enough people together. If we try it again, you can count us in. Additionally we can use Skype which allows conference calls of up to five people. I just got a call from Mike the other day - it was fun!!

Skype. So, to participate, I need to get a microphone for laptop?? :confused3

Thanks you guys. We just don't know how this whole tag fairy thing works, or door tags, or present exchanges...Can someone help us there.

The tag fairy works in mysterious ways and no one can predict that! Begging and pleading for a tag is definitely frowned upon (but I have seen it work in the past).

As far as door magnets and gift exchanges, it's a volunteer thing. I am amazed at how creative and generous so many people are. They get an idea and run with it and next thing I know, people are somehow making door magnets and pins for umpteen amount of cruisers! I don't know how they do it.

The gift exchange is more of a trinket exchange. Usually some small item representing your state or country or whatever the person feels like getting. NOTHING is mandatory or expected. It is, as I said before, just the icing on the cake.

T-shirts, however, I feel are a necessary item, adding so much more to the fun and very helpful in identifying fellow DIS'ers. Cruisetoberfest cruisers, as I said, are very creative and we have our own "designers". However, the DIS board has an internet store where things can be gotten to be worn or shared on cruise. Check it out.

Gotta run. Late for work.

Yes. If you opt for a headset, make sure it is not one for a cell phone or regular phone as it will not work. It needs to have two jacks, one for the headset jack on the computer and one for the microphone jack.
