If I split my family into 2 non-adjoining staterooms, can everybody’s key be programmed to open both rooms? If not, can we get an extra key for each room?

They can provide additional keys to the other room. At least, that's how they handled it for our groups in the past. The check-in agent on shore probably won't be able to provide the extra keys, but you can have it done at guest services once you are on-board.

They can’t add extra rooms to you own card, but they can emit blank cards for other rooms.

Great!

Any suggestions for how to assign our family to rooms?
Or other considerations for having multiple rooms?

We will have 3A (1 is a senior) and 2K (17/16)

We get 2 connecting verandah staterooms for our family of 4. Parents in one. Young adult sons in the other. We open up the divider between the verandahs so that it is one continuous space.

How old are the family members? Why did you get non-connecting? How far away are the rooms?

On other lines like RCI and NCL, who is in each room affects which drink packages you can purchase. I don't know of any reason it matters on DCL. Just figure out who gets grandma, then enter the guests however you plan to sleep.

Lifeboat assignments. If the rooms are assigned different lifeboats, then the family will be split up to your assigned place for the muster drill and in the event of an emergency. If you have concerns about the senior person being able to navigate to the area, or grabbing any necessary medical items etc for an evacuation, ensure that the person who is assigned to the room with them knows that responsibility.

I would probably book it as:
Senior / adult 1
Adult 2 / kid 17 / kid 16

Then for sleeping arrangements do whatever you want. If you end up putting the 2A and 2K for sleeping arrangements, please adjust your tips as necessary if the stateroom hosts are different.

Consider also if you have anyone with Castaway Club benefits.

Thanks for asking this. We sail next week and have our family of six split into rooms across the hall from one another. This was handy information that I hadn't though of.
