I used to work in a district that had board members who made sure the teachers worked the listed number of contract days. One year we had three days of meetings after the kids were out for the summer. This was illegal as the days we missed were attendance days and should have been made up as such. We also did such creative things as add minutes to the remaining school days and went to school on Saturday more than once. We even had our Spring Break cut short by ONE day as we came in on Friday! Hooray for power hungry school board members.....![]()
Boy, laws truly are different by state! In Iowa, ANY days missed MUST be made up, period! Students must be in classes 180 days and teachers must be on contract 190 days. In 2000-2001, we had 9 snow days and no make-up days built into the calendar so they took our monthly in-service days during second semester as contact days and stacked in-service after classes were finished. We had 7 in-service days that went until June 14 (I was 39 weeks pregnant at the time and praying for my water to break!!)
