Packing question, for those with little kids:

Dude is 4.5 - fully potty trained, but we find that when we're on vacations that involve swimming or beaches, we seem to go through a lot more underwear than at home (sand... he gets sand EVERYWHERE - and I mean EVERYWHERE, and we have 2 beach-related excursions plus Castaway Cay). Just wondering if I pack our entire stash of undies for him, or plan for laundry? We usually hand-wash a few things, but this doesn't get sand out well, and Dude is sensitive to these things.

(Yes, overthinking, but that's just how I roll :rotfl2:)

A little sand trick. Bring some baby powder with you to rub it on your son's legs and such to get the sand off of him.

Jilljill! You are back! That is a great trick, and one I forgot about. Thanks!

Tomorrow's my last day of work before vacation!

(They're also changing departments on me, while I'm on vacation, so I have to be packed up before I leave tomorrow)

One week from today (Tuesday) we will be in St. Thomas. :beach:

Not sure if anyone is still trying for one, but I'm about to cancel a palo reservation for 4 on the last night of the trip.

Thx- but baby powder (any powder, actually) flares up my kid's skin issues...so, he is just perpetually coated with sand! Life with a 4 year old boy is never boring and rarely clean. :goodvibes

Have you tried plain corn starch? Not sure how your son's skin would react to that.

A friend brings a very soft wide paint brush to get the sand off without rubbing at the skin.

We did when he was a baby, and it just made his eczema worse, so I've not tried again. It's not awful, most of the time, but we just need to moisturize like crazy (especially in this wretchedly cold weather) and powders are, well, drying! :) Besides (hoping this isn't TMI) - when I say sand gets everywhere, I mean it... and at 4.5, he'd object to powder/starch in his private bits! :rotfl2: The nice thing is his skin will improve a lot in the week we're in warm weather, which is great, since his hands were a mess tonight.

Thanks though - we've just accepted he's a dirt magnet. I blame my husband's genes. :rotfl:

ETA: Just laughing at the thought of me going at him with a paint brush in certain sand-covered areas... I'd be fired as a mom, for sure! :)

I'm so over this :cold: weather, I want :beach: . Flying south in the morning. Have a few things to do on Wed. after we arrive and then we'll hit the parks and Cape May Cafe on Thurs. and maybe a few hours on Friday. Gotta pack for the cruise somewhere in those couple of days too.

See ya on board. :sail:

Jill, I still need to take my suitcase out too, pack, and get to Buffalo for our flight Thursday evening.

If his swim shorts have a liner in them cut them out. That way when he is in the water the sand can wash his sandy parts off. I find the liners of the swim trunks keep the sand in places.

As a mom to boys and a girl I much rather deal with sandy boys. :)

The only reason we packed last night was because I want to go to knit night tonight. Getting my husband to pack is like getting him to go to the dentist. Once he gets started though, it's not that big a deal and it's over quickly.

Yesterday, in fact, he assured me he'd be home by 6pm. He was home around 7:30. Then he decided to call his dad, whom he otherwise avoids talking to (because those calls take no less than an hour). He ends the conversation just before 9... and says "I think I should eat dinner." NO. YOU SHOULD PACK.

(we both get off work at 5, so you can get an idea of how much he was dragging his heels) If we didn't pack last night, that would be the approximate process tonight and I'd never get to leave.
