After she was forced to cancel her voyage with the Double Scoop Group just days before we were to set sail, I promised Susan (ArmyFam) that I’d write a trip report… so, for what it’s worth… here goes.

HEY ARMYFAM... THIS ONE'S FOR YOU!!!!!

Cast of Characters:

Me – 38
DH-(CoachPug)-39
DD- (Tinkluvr) – 12
DS- (Lil’Pug) – 9
150 or so other DIS’ers on the Double Scoop thread – surf over the the 5/27 cruise meet thread to meet them… you’ll only have 45,000+ posts to wade through.

Guess I should start at the beginning… that would be November 10, 2004… the day that I called our TA to book our first ever DCL cruise. Booking 18 months out sure saved us a BOATload of $$, as I kept checking the pricing as we got closer, to find that, with 9 months to spare, it had doubled.

The cruise was going to be a surprise Christmas present to our kids for Christmas in 2005… yes, that meant keeping my big mouth shut for an entire 13 months… hardest thing I’ve ever had to do! Thankfully, while doing some ‘vacation research’, I found the DISBoards (November 17, to be exact), and hopped on board what would later come to be known as the “Blabbermouth thread”. This, and this alone, I think is what kept me from spilling the beans! On Christmas morning, the kids woke up to find a 152-link paper chain winding through the house, ending at a gift wrapped box containing personalized t-shirts that spilled the beans about our cruise. For the next 152 days, they ripped off a link and read the printed quote, fact or tidbit out loud at breakfast. So we ALWAYS knew how many days we had to go.

Fast forward to May 26… (if you need 18 months of details, check out the 5/27 thread… its all there…and still going.)

Unlike most of the other Double Scoopers who flew in DAYS before, enjoyed the parks, and extended their vacations, those of us who live within spitting distance of the port were forced to WORK on the day before our big adventure. So, packing up my desk at noon and changing my outgoing voicemail message to something that resembled “Don’t call me, I’m not here”, under the guise of an ‘important meeting at an account’ (well it WAS), I headed for home, then off to JB’s Fish Camp in New Smyrna for a mini-DIS-meet with 24 others, including our favorite Cruise Board Moderators, Mark & Mary, and a host of other characters. (And they ARE characters!!) We had a great time, and were ready to set sail. Of course, WE had to go back home first, do a few more loads of laundry, sleep in our own beds one more time, get the dog to the kennel… you know, more of being ‘local’ as opposed to spending the night at the Rad having another DISmeet poolside.

Upon waking at 4:22AM, I was soooooo ready to go. The stupid ‘arena anthem’ song (can’t think of the name of it, but you’d know it if you heard it… the “HEY” one in the Starbucks commercial with Hank) blaring in my imagination. I tossed and turned til 6AM… when I stumbled into the kitchen for coffee, and found Tinkluvr (DD12) dressed right down to the shoes, carryon in hand, ready to leave. Now, mind you, this is the same kid who needs a crowbar and a cowbell to get out of bed at 7AM on a school morning. Lil’Pug (DS9) was two steps behind her… ready to go, both sporting their DISBoards Blabbermouth t-shirts and buttons. (Thanks DVCPam & MarkRG). Had to wait around impatiently til 8AM when the kennel opened… had a DISmeet there, too, as the Scuba family kids were dropping off their critters for the week.

About 10 minutes into the drive, Lil’Pug realizes that “WE FORGOT FLOPPY”… Floppy is his constant night-time companion… nope, mean mom that I am, we didn’t turn back. We made the 1 hour drive to the port in record time, only to find out that we couldn’t park til 10AM. Grrrrr. The security guard told us to park across the street, and that he would let us out of the lot before letting the general traffic turn into the terminal area. Met up with several other DIS’ers in the parking lot, all of us eager to get on board NOW! We were the 2nd car out of the lot… the car ahead of us (obviously not DIS’ers) was taking his time, asking questions to the porter… we jumped out, threw the bags to the curb, and the kids and I managed to be THE FIRST ones through the metal detector that morning, while CoachPug parked the truck. By the time he returned from getting a front row spot (its strange seeing your truck parked next to the Magic as you sail away!), I had already been through the check in area, and was ready to pick up our pager for the kids. Gotta LOVE online checkin!!!!!!! It literally took less than 30 seconds from start to finish.

Usually, waiting in the terminal is the hardest part, but the DIS’ers commandeered a corner (more like a large portion) of the terminal, and spent the next 90 minutes or so getting into high gear! I’d love to be able to say that I managed to meet everyone… but even after 7 days, there were some that I barely got to say more than a ‘hello’ to. (Guess we all need to cruise again to catch up with the rest!) The kids in the group all seemed to become instant friends, and, even the ones who had cruised together before were more than happy to welcome the first-timer kids into the fold.

After watching and ‘waving the royal wave’ as the concierge level DIS’ers boarded, it was finally our turn. By this point, we had somehow gotten ourselves separated from the DIS herd, but ended up ahead of them… through the Mickey tunnel, stopping for our pre-requisite boarding photo (horrible, by the way, and I HATE the map background), then into the grand Atrium as our name was announced. The moment had FINALLY arrived!!! I just hoped it would live up to my wildly high expectations.

First stop was Rockin Bar D for Palo ressies… CajunGirl2(Angie) was nice enough to offer us the other ‘half’ of her reservation for 4 on Formal night, however, we were hoping to eat as a family that night, so we went out in search of a better time for us. As luck would have it, Dancind was canceling her Thursday night, and was directly in front of us, so all worked out great! The it was off to Parrot Cay for lunch… had to get to the shrimp before ScubaMatt devoured it all… we had been warned.

My kids hadn’t cruised before, and, having no idea if they would be susceptible to motion sickness like DH, I forced them to take Dramamine… and I do mean FORCED in the case of DS9. It wasn’t a chewable, so I planted it in his blue jello and made him eat it… once it was in his mouth, he refused. A lot of tears and frantic gesturing ensued, as I REFUSED to let him spit gnawed-up jello back into his plate. Finally, after several embarrassing moments with a poor young couple at our table who had to witness it (sorry, whoever you are…), he managed to get it into his system. (It made him feel terrible all night… I’ll never give it to him again.) Little did I know how little the Magic actually moves… I was disappointed that I didn’t get rocked to sleep at night, as is customary on other ships I’ve sailed on.

After lunch, we set out to explore the ship… DS was playing basketball on the WWoS deck in record time. DD had already taken off wandering with her new friends. Our stateroom, 2034, a Cat 9, was ready at 1:30, as planned. I had been worried about 4 of us in one stateroom (as DH and I always cruised kid-less, and on cruise lines with smaller cabins than DCL). We had plenty of space for the 4 of us- especially considering that we spent ZERO time in there!

Our 3PM DISMeet on Deck 10 was almost ‘unnecessary’, as we had spent so much time getting to know each other in the terminal… but of course it was fun! We were already getting "DoubleScoopTroop Shout-outs" from DJ Holywood, who had asked us about our huge gang after seeing our shirts/buttons/totebags, etc. Lots of fun music and festivities to get us in the mood! (As if we needed any help???!!!)

DD informed us that she had just been to the stateroom and our bags were already there… so off I went to unpack. It’s amazing how it takes 3 weeks to pack, and 20 minutes to unpack. Enough drawer & closet space for everyone, even though this is a room without the beloved ‘steamer trunk’ in it- not a problem! The oft-repeated cruise tip of bringing a shoe bag was a good one.

Lifeboat drill went off without a hitch… though I had to agree with one of the comedians (forgot which one) who said that PFD stands for “Pretty Flippin Dorky”. But, as we all know, in light of recent events on other lines, evacuation procedures are in place for a reason. It WAS great to have a muster station inside, in the air-conditioned Walt Disney Theatre.

Originally, we were going to attend the DIS sailaway on Deck 4… which was on deck 4 so that GarRy (cruisingoose) could see the banner that was made for him as he waved to us from the jetty. (He couldn’t make the trip at the last minute do to personal issues…) I was torn… I wanted to send all the pixie dust we could to GarRy, as he needs all we’ve got and more, however, knew that the Sailaway Party was something that my kids HAD to experience… being a DISer, I knew GarRy would understand. Headed up to Deck 10, directly across from the Ariel Vision for a birds-eye view of the sailaway party. As Mickey’s countdown got to 1 and the magical horn sounded, I actually had tears in my eyes… (yes, I’m a sap)… it was FINALLY HERE!!!

More later... but the rest certainly WON'T be as long.. from here on in, the details get a little fuzzy!

I love you trip report so far- already! It's way better than mine. I knew I wouldn't be good at trip reports... a reason I'd never done them before. LOL

Can't wait to read the rest of how YOUR cruise went- same time as ours. LOL

Fun! Fun! Fun!

Looking forward to more! Keep them coming!

The crying part is very funny - I got tears in my eyes reading it!! I :guilty: know once that happens, I will be bawling. And my DD7 (who is a very LOUD talker) will say "MOM, WHY ARE YOU CRYING???!" so loud everyone will be staring at the SAP! :lmao:

What fun to read your trip report! Don't worry about the length...we're all reading your every word!!!

AWESOME REPORT.

Sorry- meant to put that in the first installment... being first in line, but not concierge level, we got Boarding Group 2... which stepped onto the ship approximately 5 minutes after Group 1... which was right before noon.

Maybe I'll get to the rest of the trip today...

Hey, Kiki, hurry up! I love reading trip reports about trips I've been on. Lots of memories, no effort for me!

Greetings from the Aug Double dip crew

Great start on the trip report

Thanks

Being on the main seating coveted “APL” rotation meant the earliest of early dinnertimes… which worked out fine for us, mostly because all 4 of us have mastered the art getting ready quickly. Didn’t leave the sailaway party til 5:10… still managed to change into something more presentable for dinner and make it there for 5:30.

One of our fellow DIS’ers had linked our dining, which was great, however, things didn’t quite go according to plan. We ended up at a table by ourselves, with TiggerInNY’s family of 4 a table away from us at a table for 8. Our phenomenal waitstaff, Claudio & Rodel made sure that it was all fixed by the next dinner. Mary & Mark (WDWLVR & MarkRG) were at the table next to us, along with the OhioMouse family… Nick & KT came to our table each night to share their ‘magic-trick of the day’. Our kids looked forward to it every night. Christopher had a great time at dinner with Anthony and AJ every night… the ‘silly’ factor in boys age 6 – 10 definitely increases exponentially once there are 3 of them together, all trying so hard to behave. It was great fun, though! Just proves that all parents have the same dinnertime ‘challenges’ with their kids!! We had a great week sharing dinner with DIS'ers!

After dinner, we were off to check out the Lab & Ocean Quest, as this was our first DCL cruise, and the kids first cruise ever. It was supposedly ‘family time’, however, kids with signing in/out privileges could stay if they wanted to without parents. We stuck around for awhile, as we thought the place was pretty cool, and wanted to see what was going on for the week. We were afraid that Christopher would park himself at a computer and play racing games all week if left to his own devices. (Though, more often than not, he ended up on the Sports Deck playing basketball.)

We had told the kids that they could sign themselves out, but that Christopher had to page us to let us know where he was off to next. Unfortunately, he would get bored when there were 5 or 10 minutes left in an activity, and would sign out, rather than stick around to see what cool thing was happening next. (He also thought there was TOO much free time- he would have liked more actual ‘things to do’.) As long as both kids were in at midnight, and had some reasonable idea of where they were, all was right with the world. We also told them that we DIDN’T want to find them in the stateroom watching TV… this sort of backfired, as, on several occasions, we tried to get Christopher to chill in the room for a little while so that he wouldn’t be so exhausted, but couldn’t get him to sit still long enough. Now I know why duct tape is on other people's packing lists.

After the Lab Open House, and a stop at Treasure Ketch to find Christopher something to replace Floppy for the week (Sailor Goofy) we headed off to the Let the Magic Begin Show…. which we all enjoyed. Christopher was a bit freaked out by “Simon” the dummy… he didn’t go to the other show that the ventriloquist did, as he had NO desire to see that ‘weird scary guy’ again. Something about him (a ‘traditional’ dummy) just creeped him out.

After the show, the kids went their separate ways (Elizabeth hung out with the girls all week… very little lab time from what I can get out of her…), and we headed down to Rockin Bar D for music (Beach Bugs were a great cruise band!!!) and Match Your Mate. It was either that, or LISTEN to it through the ceiling of our stateroom, as we were directly below the wooden floor in the ‘lobby’ area of RBD. Missed the 2nd half of Stacey & Jay, and Barb & Tony in their ‘stage debut’, as Christopher decided he had had enough for one day, and paged us back to the stateroom. (Maybe if he hadn’t gotten UP so early this morning… oh wait… so did I…)

Phew… FINALLY to Day 2… The rest won’t take as long… it all gets fuzzy from here on in… especially because we REALLY didn’t DO a whole lot… our main goal on this vacation was to relax and let the kids do what they wanted… and we did just that! We were determined NOT to ‘schedule’ anything (well… except Palo and a banana boat ride… no DCL excursions, no big plans for sightseeing…).

Being early risers, we were up and off to Topsiders for breakfast by 7:30 or so… each day became progressively harder to get the kids out of bed, however, growing up in our house, they KNOW better than to lie there for too long… after all- when they were little, THEY got US up at 5AM seven days a week… so a little payback is in order. Back to pack up the snorkel & beach gear and head off for our first look at Castaway Cay. We didn’t realize until we returned to the ship that the gangway directly under our window was open… oh well…

This was definitely our WORST day… but, a bad day at CC is better than a good day at work, I guess. I think the kids are so accustomed to living near the beach (we go almost every Sunday), and so tired from their first really late night (midnight as opposed to the usual 9:30) that it just wasn’t very magical for them. I don’t know if they were expecting a ticker-tape parade with 76 trombones and flying elephants or what… but it was one argument after another.

Christopher had checked into Scuttles Cove when we got there… only to realize that A.) He couldn’t check himself out there, B). There were no swimming or water activities going on (too far “inland”) and C.) it was HOT… even by our Florida Resident standards… so he paged us to get him, and proceeded to NOT want to do anything that we wanted to do. Didn’t want to snorkel, didn’t want to swim after they closed the playscape due to low tides (Sorry Bud… that’s nature). I took him for a walk to Grouper’s Game Pavilion. I have no idea where Elizabeth was at this point… somewhere with ‘the girls’.

Hmm… lets see… in the space of about 45 minutes we: played basketball, played shuffleboard, played pool, played shuffleboard, played ping pong, played shuffleboard, played jumbo chess, played shuffleboard, played jumbo checkers. Did I mention we played shuffleboard? (He had never seen it til Deck 4 before sailaway… now he thinks its soooo cooool…. Little does he know its an old fogie’s game.) Then he wanted me to teach him to play volleyball… for real… what a laugh…. Ever seen a 38-year-old out-of-shape-mom try to play beach volleyball with a 9 year old… good for a laugh or two. It took every bribe I could think of to get him back to the other end of CC to eat some lunch. On the way back, he begged and begged and begged to rent bikes. I told him I’d think about it.

Met back up with the rest of the family for a quick, but delicious, lunch. (Grilled mahi-mahi sandwiches… YUM!!!!) The first word out of his mouth after his last bite of hamburger (well… actually while still chewing… manners aren’t always as I’d like them to be)… “Can we rent bikes now?” So, off we went… rode the whole bike path (including the neat new section off the middle of the runway) in less than half of our allotted time… so he wanted to do it again. It’s about 8000 degrees, and here we are… on bikes with no gears. Thankfully, there ARE water stations along the way. While we were stopped for water waaaaay down the path, near the CM beach, there were CM’s changing the water out. Christopher thanked them for such good cold water (he’s thoughtful that way), and they gave him a cool CM exclusive Jiminy Cricket pin. (He’s not into pin trading, but does cherish the few that he has, all tacked to his lampshade in his bedroom.) This made his whole day!

At some point… can’t remember whether it was before or after this, someone body-snatched my sweet, loving 12 year old DD, and replaced her with the DEMON TWEEN from who-knows-where. This was definitely the lowlight of my vacation… ended up ‘having it out’ with her right there on the beach ( my apologies to OhioMinnie & family who witnessed the whole thing). I don’t even remember where she went or what she did after that… but she WANTED to go back to the ship with the other girls… and I didn’t want her to. (In hindsight, I probably should have just let her go… but sometimes, Mom’s just say NO!) Several discussions ensued with each child about how this is EVERYONE's vacation, and we ALL need to be able to have a good time... (I never DID get to do what I wanted that day... oh well...) Enough about that.

Somewhere around 3PM, we had had enough beach for one day (again- we are spoiled by being able to enjoy the beach year round… others probably think we were crazy for leaving), and headed back to the shade and pools on the ship til dinner. Dinner was in Parrot Cay, where we were ‘finally’ united with our tablemates (TiggerInNY & family). After dinner, all the boys went to the Lab, and Elizabeth and the adults went to the Ventriliquist’s show. (Remember… Christopher wanted NOTHING to do with that creepy Simon guy…). This was always the time of night that Elizabeth felt ‘lost in the shuffle’… all her friends were on late seating… so she usually went to the shows with us, as she wasn’t too thrilled with what was going on in the Lab or Ocean Quest.

Once we ditched her… I mean… once she met up with her friends after their dinner… it was off to RBD again for 60’s night (The Beach Bugs as the Beatles… am I the only one who sees the pun in that??).

OK… I lied… so Day 2 is as long as Day 1 was… but really… it does get shorter from here on out.

You're writing a great report!! I love the anecdotes and reading about what you all did. All those months of planning---well worth it!!!

this is great! it's nice to know what kinds of things people did on this cruise. i'm waiting for my 7/22 double dipper!

ps. my nickname from my family is kiki. i love your screenname. it's adorable.

Day 3 (Sea Day), Day 4((Costa Maya) were very similar, and went something like this:

(Details are not really in order… just some highlights from the days… Costa Maya was pretty much a ‘sea day’ as we only left the ship for an hour.)

Breakfast at Topsiders. We had every intention of having breakfast in the dining rooms, as on past cruises (on other lines) this has been where the GOOD food is. Never made it to a dining room, except for character breakfast on Thursday- but we just had coffee, as Palo’s brunch awaited us at 10:30. Food at Topsiders was great. I love “REAL” (not instant or microwaved) oatmeal… so that and a plate of fruit was perfect every morning. Christopher went the ‘health-conscious’ route… about 10 strips of bacon, some salami, a chocolate covered donut, and a handful of grapes. He is such a picky eater, and I was determined that food would NOT be made an issue on this vacation. As long as he had something in his stomach at all times, and wasn’t sick, I didn’t care WHAT he ate.

After breakfast on sea days, the kids had ‘strict orders’ to find something constructive to do til dinner. Christopher bopped in and out of the Lab, the Sports Deck, the Goofy pool, but I think mostly, he kept the pizza makers busy and the ice-cream-machine-filler on his toes. Ray and I set up camp at the outer edge of the Quiet Cove Pool area.

The kids knew where to find us… and find us they did. Christopher comes RUNNING over to Ray… “Dad, dad… you gotta come with me… they’re having a Dad’s contest… to see whose Dad call scream the loudest…” So Ray reluctantly goes over there, gets up on stage with DJ Hollywood, and a bunch of other ‘sucker-Dads’, only to find out it’s a Dancin’ Dad’s contest. Absolutely HYSTERICAL!!!!!! (Ray makes no bones about the fact that he does not, can not, will not dance… but its amazing what a Dad will do for his kid!!) The look on Christopher’s face, to see Ray up there, was 100% priceless! After that, we spent all afternoon chatting with DIS’ers in the Quiet Cove Pool.

Monday was Formal Night at Lumiere’s… we had another DIS’ers daughter with us for dinner, as they had Palo ressies… no problem at all- Elizabeth was happy to have a friend at dinner. Headed off to the Rick Purpura (pseudo-magician/comedian) show, then to the Golden Mickeys…. Christopher got bored, and left to play basketball halfway through… missing the Toy Story segment, which would have been his favorite. Oh well… his vacation, too. Kids went their separate ways again, and we went to RBD for the “After Party” with the “adult’ show by the ventriloquist. (laughed off most of the calories that we ate for dinner.)

Tuesday was Costa Maya day… we headed into the port area for about an hour after breakfast, and decided that was enough. Christopher got the onyx chess set he was eyeing, and Elizabeth got some bracelets for her friends at home. After talking to many others, I realize that we SHOULD have planned an excursion for that day, as there were some great adventures to be had… however, it was a good day to enjoy the lower crowd level on the ship… definitely a relaxing day. Ray plopped his stuff down on a deck chair, and said, “I’m going to check out the spa and the rainforest room… I’ll be right back.” An hour or so later… still no sign of him. I set off in search of my missing man, and find there is NO ONE at the spa desk, as there is a crew drill going on. I find the rainforest room… and find him sound asleep. So much for “I’ll be right back.” At least he was enjoying his vacation!

Elizabeth and I took in the matinee of Twice Charmed… I KNEW my guys wouldn’t be too interested… great show! Probably the best one of the week!

Day 5 – Cozumel – Paradise Beach

While we didn’t have any DCL excursions planned, I knew that I wanted to go to Paradise Beach on Cozumel. Actually, I wanted to go back to Chakannab, where my sister and I had a great time several years ago, however, it still is not open. After doing some research online, I decided PB would be a good substitute. Several other DIS’ers had no definite plans… when someone asked how we should coordinate going to PB, I was determined NOT to get into major planning mode on this one… my response was.. “First tender, first taxi, first empty chair at Paradise Beach”… which is exactly what we did… and quite a few DIS’ers followed.

Tendering was easy- I think we were in the first group after the excursions. Quck and painless. NOTE: They don’t tell you til you get to the theatre to wait that THERE ARE NO TOWELS at the gangway… this is the first ship I have ever been on like this… and you can’t get your tender assignment til your whole party is ready to go. (Apparently towels ARE provided for people doing DCL excursions… the rest of us are chopped liver- why can’t they print it on the full page-instruction sheet that is in the stateroom the night before???) So, we sent the kids on a mad dash to get towels from Deck 9. (They run faster than we do.)

When you get to the dock, ignore all the locals trying to get you to take their limo and transportation… head straight for the line of red & white taxis… they get you where you’re going for a flat rate and are reputable.

Paradise Beach was great! $8 US gets you all day use of a chair, an umbrella, floats, kayaks, on-shore snorkeling, 2 water trampolines, and a great climbing iceberg. (Which is VERY hard to climb, but the kids and kids-at-heart LOVED it). Elizabeth and I had a great time kayaking. Food and drinks were great- reasonable price; quick chair-side service, and friendly staff. Tom, the owner, is originally from Canada, and caters to the ‘North American’ tourist crowd… all filtered water, food that you can eat without worry, clean restrooms, etc. We spoke to him for quite awhile about how he’s recovered from the hurricane- his place is definitely in better shape than any other place we saw. Stayed there til 2:30 or so, then back to the ship to avoid the tender-rush later, and chill for awhile.

Tonight was pirate night, with dinner in Parrot Cay. Fantastic menu, as usual, with delicious dessert! Went to see The Wild in the WD Theatre after dinner… Christopher fell asleep. He was so tired from climbing that iceberg for hours on end… I let him sleep the rest of us watched the movie, as he soooo wanted to make it to the Pirates IN the Carribean Deck Party. This was great. Got a prime spot, with him sitting on top of one of the towel boxes (no, not the ones that say “don’t sit here). As soon as the fireworks were done, Christopher was ready for bed. We didn’t make it to the buffet or the movie… he had reached his limit on being overtired. (Of course, Elizabeth hadn’t… she was off with the girls, as usual.) Unfortuantely, we missed the John Charles show- somehow we missed that in the Navigator- saw his few minutes on the last night, and wished that we had caught his whole show. Oh well- can’t do everything.

Thursday was another at-sea day… or, as we call it Palo Day! We took the kids to the Character Breakfast that morning… we had 10:30 brunch reservations at Palo (thanks to ScubaDiver & ScubaMom), so it was just coffee for us. To pass the time til 10:30, we enjoyed the “Deck 4 Comfy Chairs” for awhile. Palo brunch was a 3-hour affair… impossible to describe in mere words. The food was absolutely incredible, and never-ending. MickeyMo & MickeyMo’sBo joined us as well, and we had a great time eating and talking and talking and eating.

It was during this time that we later found out that Elizabeth had her ‘good-sister’ moment of the week… inviting Christopher to join her and Kelly for lunch at Topsiders, and making sure that he ate something besides French fries. She gets a gold star for that one.

I really have no idea what we did between the time that we left Palo after our 3 hour brunch until it was time to go BACK to Palo for our 3 hour dinner at 7:30, except we DID go to the Disney Dreams show while our kids were at dinner. (They would have loved it- but neither managed to make it to the other showing while we were at Palo.) Waddled down to Mike Super’s show in RBD after gorging ourselves once again on the best food in the world, then it was time for the Dessert Buffet. Yeah… right… like we had room to eat anything else!!!!! The DIS’ers commandeered a corner of Lumiere’s, complete with a few, I mean several, well maybe it was many bottles of Banfi, and other assorted wines that were shared. Didn’t eat much, but enjoyed more laughs with a great bunch!

Friday- The Second Scoop of Castaway Cay.

This was a much better day than the first – mostly because the kids now had friends to hang with, knew what was where, and realized up front that I wasn’t letting them spend the day on the ship doing nothing. I got to snorkel (finally)… visibility was very good early in the morning – not a great variety of fish, but there sure were a lot of them!!! We brought our own gear, and didn’t do an excursion- just swam out pretty far and saw what we could from there. Lunch was great, Konk Koolers and Bahama Mama’s (especially 2-for-1) were yummy, and all was right with the world.

The one thing we DID plan was our Banana Boat ride… which Christopher chickened out on at the last minute. (He wants to be a stunt man or a race car driver, but doesn’t like anything that goes fast or high… go figure… sounds like his career won’t be going places…) We had paid for his ride already. We had a great time, but it was pretty mild. Thankfully, Elizabeth got a bit of Disney magic… the CM told her that she could use his ticket to ride again later (and… shhhh… bring a friend…) When it was time, she couldn’t find her friends, so I went with her… we had a wild ride (barely managed to stay on)!!!

Unlike the first CC day, when the kids didn’t WANT to be there, today, we had to practically drag them off the island. As we were leaving the island, my favorite song started to play… “On the Coast of Somewhere Beautiful” (hence what I have ALWAYS had listed as my location in my User Profile) … how fitting!!

Dinner was great, as usual. Of course, I had showered BEFORE dinner, but got another shower AT dinner, thanks to an errant glass of ice water, and the well placed elbow of a 6 year old. (No problem, Anthony…) Then it was off to the Disney Dreams show, and to RBD… which was almost EMPTY. Little did we know that everyone was in the Atrium for “Til We Meet Again’… somehow we missed that on the Nav., and being first-timers, didn’t realize it. Oh well… guess we need to sail again to do the things we missed. It wasn’t in vain though… with the few people in RBD, the Beach Bugs were playing individual requests for everyone in the room. Still a lot of fun on our last night with our great table-mates.

Saturday AM came all too fast. Up to Topsiders for an early breakfast, then into the line to disembark. No point in delaying the inevitable. We were off the ship by 8, and home by 9. How depressing.

Waiting for us at home was our unmade bed, that we left a mess in our haste to leave just 7 days before (guess the room stewards never showed up), and “Notification of Non-Renewal” on our homeowners insurance policy. For those of you NOT in Florida… this is pretty common these days… but what a way to have all the magic of the week pulled out from under you. Oh well… at least we had a great week, FANTASTIC memories, and can’t wait to do it again someday.

:thumbsup2 Some things I learned: :thumbsup2
  • This was everyone’s vacation… while we enjoyed our times as a family; we all enjoyed doing what we each wanted to do.
  • Bring the shoe bag.
  • A Dad will do anything (even at risk of embarrassing himself) for his son.
  • A 65-lb child CAN survive for 7 days on pizza and ice cream.
  • It’s more fun to travel with a group… especially the DOUBLE SCOOP GROUP! DIS friends are the best kind!
  • And when you ARE traveling with a group that large, there is just no way to get to spend time with everyone… which is why we come back to the DIS and start posting all over again… to catch up!!!
  • A brand-new Cozumel baseball hat, when worn backward by a 9-year old on Deck 10 CAN be sent out to sea… quickly.
  • 4 family members CAN survive in a Cat 9 stateroom for 7 days.
  • I want to do it all again!! (But I new THAT before I set sail!!!)

Kiki - great trip report. I love to read about the same cruise I took, but from a different perspective.

Thanks, Kiki, great report! I do regret missing Twice Charmed. We fell asleep in the cabin that day, sooo tired after a day of sun and fun. Guess we will have to go back again!

Don't feel bad about missing the Farewell. It was our third DCL cruise, and I didn't even know about it. We walked by when it was going on. And yet another reason to cruise agian!

Thank you for posting your trip report! It was wonderful to read your impressions and anecdotes! I am so looking forward to our first cruise on the 2nd Double Dip!!

Meg

Thanks Karen for a great report. I agree with Sandi - I like reading others views of the same cruise we were on. I agree traveling with fellow DISers is the best!
