04/27/11 DCL's WONDERful LA-VANCOUVER REPO ON THE WAY TO ALAKSA

Me! DH & I do not care to do Palo this cruise, but there are a couple of shore excursions we really want! Midnight for me too!

Sounds like cyber-slumber party time to me! Good luck on getting the excursions you want. It seems this and the first Alaska cruise are pretty full. I tend to want things that others do not, since its me and my 5 year old. Aquariums, anyone? I thought not, lol. I do hope for some whale-watching though.

It has been a while since I've posted on the DIS - but I am back from the 2 day Cruise to NoWhere and had a great time... (bday celebration for me) so I am happy to announce I will be joining this cruise as well! I look forward to getting to know you in the next upcoming weeks!:cloud9:

This is my little sister! So happy she is coming with us. Peg, I'll send appropriate PM's to get you on the rouster and on the lanyard list! :woohoo:

Which ones are you looking at, if you don't mind me asking?
we're planning to meet a "dis pirate" friend in San Francisco... can't really plan anything with DCL for Vancouver- so that leaves Victoria.... and I can't see anything we'd really want to do bad enough to pay that much for it. ??? I mean there are tons of things we want to do at Alaskan ports that are quite expensive but we really want to do them- not so in Victoria? IDK what to do. I'm wondering if we should just explore on our own there and not spend a bunch there? I dunno....
Don't wanna do their whale excursion because it's not guaranteed like some on Alaskan ports are so we'll do those there. I'm not sure about the butterfly gardens and aquariums.. we've seen so many of those. I'd rather do something that is more "exclusive" to the area that we'd remember it to remember Victoria instead of just being yet another place we went to a butterfly garden and/or aquarium- yanno? What else is there? eek!

And what are y'all looking at to do in SF?

We hope to do the Walt Disney Family Museum, Alcatraz and Muir Woods. As well as ride a cable car, see Lombard street, Golden Gate Bridge, maybe visit Fisherman's Wharf and see Ghiradelli Square. I don't think we have enough time in San Francisco.;)

Does anyone know a way to get to the WD family museum and Muir Woods? Or have any suggestions on how to get there?

Okay... I'll tell, but don't steal 'em all from me. We want to go to Alcatraz as it is on DH's bucket list! But we have a DD10 (turning 11 in San Fransisco) so we CANNOT do the adult only departure and hope the other one has not filled up.
In Victoria we want to rent a carriage. DD loves horses.

You can laugh all you want, but I can't go on the sea-life watching boat out of Victoria... they listed the possible animals and I had an instant vision of a pod of Orca Killer Whales throwing around seals before eating them... that is just what would happen if I was on the boat too! Then I would have to give my daughter Valium the rest of her life. No thanks.

Paid in full and waiting for the cabin assignment...........Now we are putting together the other details, no excursions yet, I'm thinking that we will do a lot on our own. I think that it was easier to plan for the Med cruise than the repo!

The WDFM is about a $10 cab ride from the port. You are best taking an excursion to Muir Woods it is north of SF acrossed to GG Bridge.
We will be docked right at Fisherman's Warf and it is a short walk to Ghiradellie Square. You could do the Warf, the WDM and GS all on the second day and take the trip to Muir Woods our first day in port.
Does anyone know what pier we will be docking at or how to find out. My BFF who works in SF said that if there is more than one cruise ship in port the second one is further away from FW closer to AT&T ballpark.
Those of you staying up I hope you get the excursions you want. Sue

Hi Peggy Jo! We are getting close! Sounds like a fun 2 day getaway. Have you cruised on the Wonder before? Were there any changes?

Ironically enough i've just been off and on searching for info, maps, directions, etc to WD family museum. It was quite the endeavor considering it took me forever to even find where Disney would be docking at SF LOL It's not as easy to find when the ship is only there for a port of call instead of cruising from that port! haha
From what I've found- on the SF port website- it says cruise ships dock at pier 35 alongside Fisherman's Wharf on Embardicardo or something like that (probably not spelled right LOL) But I found it on the map- and it's 3.3 miles/11min to WDFM.

haha
well here's the thing- we have a DISfriend that has offered (quite some time ago and hasn't changed her mind! She's awesome that way LOL) to hang with us in SF and so I started looking into it and you know what? It's a hecka lot cheaper to do it on your own. Even if you had to take public transportation. For instance the WDFM was $129 per person- above age 9- which for us would be times 5 people. That's $645! To book it on our own would be $76.... seriously... I'm not joking.
It's similar when looking at alcatraz- save a ton for us to do it on our own and not thru DCL. And I figure why not- if we do those two things on Friday- it's not like we have to be worried about making it back on the ship... the next day! LOL

What's interesting is that so far in Victoria only the carriage interests us as well.... we might be fighting over that one. sorry LOL Hopefully we both get it.

$10 cab ride huh? so even if we don't have friend taking us that day- and even if we had to get 2 cabs for our family of 5- it would still be only $96 vs. DCL $645... still a HUGE no brainer. haha
Thanks for that info!

For now I'm thinking we want to do WDFM and alcatraz- I'm not sure which day/which order.
Ohhh so we might dock further away. :(
well maybe we'll get the closer one since we'll be there for 2 days.

does anyone know how that works when a ship stays at port of call over night like that? Can you get on/off the ship anytime you want or is there time limits like how late you can board that night? I'm assuming no matter what time you returned they'd let you on.... LOL But what about how early you can leave in the morning? Is it just the entire time you're at the port day or night you're allowed to get off/on?

What time can we start booking? Is it midnight so 11pm CST? It's been so long since I've booked excursions online.. like since 2008... so I forget exactly.

Oh, I see a previous post - just waiting - it will be 9pm here - advantage to be on the West Coast for a change :goodvibes

Ok so how long from right this second. that's the easiest way for me to figure it out. LOL

So who else is feeling anxiety?

On my first cruise I had booked the Romantic Escape package, so getting reservations was not an issue. This time I am worried that I won't be able to schedule a Palo brunch.

We will probably skip the Palo dinner, because my wife won't want our son eating dinner without a family member present. So I will miss the souffle, but I can live without it.

I don't think we will do any of the official excursions. We grew up in the LA area, we've both visited the Bay Area enough to know how to do what we want to do, and living where we do has allowed us several visits to both Victoria and Vancouver.

But the anxiety over Palo reservations is killing me!

4 minutes! Only going to try for a Palo dinner. Doing the rest on our own! Do all the Cyber-slumber partiers have their bunny slippers on?:rotfl2:

^^ no but I have my mickey pj's on with socks. Does that count? LOL

don't get stressed. Sometimes you can even get it on the ship!
And a WHOLE lot of DIS'ers on this cruise are also on the may 3rd cruise so hopefully that'll make it more likely that everyone gets one chance. :)

I know what you mean though. Our first cruise we had the REAS pkg and then one time we did PC it was like :scared1::scared1: because so many people were booked- and back then it was like almost all of us were booking on the same night (castaway club members without the "tiers" of that) but since then we've had concierge booking....
I'm not stressed right now but I know I will be for the May 3rd cruise because there are some things we really really REALLY want to do... and will be just shy of devastated if we don't. LOL It's likely to be our only trip to Alaska and for sure our only one with our eldest dd- well pretty sure. LOL maybe when we're old or something. haha Not likely.

omg 3 minutes!
bye!
LOL

Got It! Day 2 Dinner, 6:30 pm. :yay: Didn't see any brunch ressies open :sad2:
How did it go for everyone else?

I got in right away only to find both brunch and tea completely booked. Yes, I am frustrated.

So how does it work for west coast cruises? Do they let you make onboard reservations when you board as they have done for Wonder cruises out of Florida, or do they open reservations at a set time as they do for Magic cruises from Florida?

I have a lot to say about my experience at Port Canaveral, almost all of it negative. If things go as poorly for me at Long Beach as they did at PC and they start ressies when they start boarding, then I have no reason for hope.

Same.
On right at midnight and zero brunch or teas. I wasn't sure I was going to book brunch or not though so I was only looking to decide... but alas, no choice in the matter.
that's sad for those that really wanted it. I guess they didn't save any open for us lowly silver cc members. Forget about those who have never cruised with Disney before too- apparently.
If I were you- i'd try once you board.... immediately.
