QOTD: Is anyone doing any weight loss or exercise plans to build up endurance prior to walking a million miles a day at the parks?

I am! I HAVE to drop this baby weight! As the nutritional provider for my LO I wasn't supposed to diet (he has had a hard time gaining weight) but he's weaning and Momma is cuttin' back those calories!
We're also taking daily walks to the park (a mile away) and back. Yesterday was our first day of real heat -85!- and my kids did surprisingly well. Just made them sleepy!
It's only been 2 weeks and I can already see a difference. I think I'll be set by August... And then I'll ruin everything with Disney Dining. :rotfl2:

I try to walk for an hour every evening. Not so much to build up endurance for vacation or lose weight (I have given up hope of that :rolleyes1) but more because I just like to be healthy. And its good for my stress level....an hour to breathe the fresh air and work off some pent up frustration. If I happen to firm up my fanny in the interim, well that's just a happy bonus ::yes:: .

QOTD: YES!!! I am exercising AND watching what I eat. Down 9 pounds in 2 weeks!!

Way to go! I'm also exercising and watching what I eat. I'm down 15 lbs since I started the beginning of April. My wife and I are walking between 3 & 6 miles a day too. The kids are walking to school most days, weather permitting and getting 3 miles in too.

If I recall you can see all of the iconic structures of the world from up there. You can see the castle, the hat, ToT, the Tree of Life, the ball, etc.

We wanted to go when we saw it in November but it was closed due to weather plus we had tired and cranky kids. :(

My wife is afraid of heights but she still wants to go on it. I've partially cured her of her fear though since she did the Sky Jump off of the Stratosphere for her 30th birthday last year. :lmao: Our friend that is joining us also wants to go on it so I think we'll be set. Hoping to get a Groupon for it when we get closer to the time.

Regarding the Characters in Flight, it looks like fun, and I'm sure the views are amazing. And we aren't afraid of heights. But at $18 a person times 5...I don't think a 5 or ten minute experience is worth almost $100! I see I just missed some groupons on it - too bad, because for $10 a head we may have done it.

As for today's QOTD, I would like to lose a few pounds, but I'm in shape for the most part and should be fine walking around Disney. I run 3-4 times a week, usually two or three short runs (3 miles) and one longer run (5-8 miles). I'm trying to be better about adding some cross training in there - I attempt to hit the gym the other 2-3 days a week, but that's hit or miss. My biggest problem is I love to eat :rotfl2: If I didn't run I'd easily be 20 pounds heavier than I am....it basically allows me to eat what I want without gaining.

Wow, that's fantastic! I just started running a few weeks ago (I'm 45 and this is my mid-life crisis I think :rotfl2:). The last few runs I did 2.5 miles, upped that to 2.75 this morning but now I'm sore (and I don't get sore calves, shins or hamstrings - it's my butt - too much information huh??) So, I can't imagine doing 8 miles :scared1:

Have you done any of the Disney runs? I'm seriously thinking of doing the 10K at the Princess half marathon weekend in February 2014....we'll have to see how much I can progress over the next few months...

I've been on and off with trying to make myself a runner for almost a year. I registered for a 5K yesterday because I decided I needed a goal to work towards. The race is in less than 4 weeks! AHH! My goal is to run the whole thing without walking, but right now I can't manage much over 2 miles. I'm going to slowly up that over the next few weeks, we'll see how that goes :rotfl:

Good for you both for getting out there to run! I am 43 and never ran in my life before December of this past year. I don't even know what possessed me to try except that my sister is a runner (marathons, etc.) and I always thought I'd love to be able to do it. So on December 19 I got off the couch (literally) and started with the couch to the 5k program. I had one setback when I needed to have a procedure done on my toe and couldn't run for two weeks, but got right back into it and finished the program. Then I went on to Jeff Galloway's 10k program and I am on week 10 of that (out of 13). In January I signed up myself and my DW (also not a runner) for two 5ks in April. I told her she'd better download the app and get out there because they were non-refundable :rotfl:

So she did too...she's a few weeks behind me, but we both ran our 5ks. My first one I finished in 34:02 and this past weekend at the zoo in 33.01, so I was happy to improve my time. Those are the only two races I've done, but I have Disney on my list! I am going to run the Castaway Cay 5k next week :cool1: and my goal is to do a C2C in 2014. I am planning on the Tink 1/2 in January and then F&W in November. I did do a virtual 10k (the Nike Women's), but I need to get out there and do a real one soon.

If you haven't already looked at the Jeff Galloway program, check it out. It's a run/walk method and I swear it is what has kept me consistent and uninjured. I have a bad back and a tendon injury from a few years ago. This allows me to run at a pretty good pace even with the walk breaks (I average an 11 or so minute mile - and that includes the walking). I'm planning on running around the Boardwalk area and Poly this summer (if the humidity doesn't kill me!), and I can't believe it, but I'm really looking forward to it!

I actually just printed out his training program for the Princess half yesterday! Basically it says that you can start training in October, and run the half marathon in February! This really surprised me, but I think that means with generous walk breaks. I can't imagine you could run for 13.1 miles straight with only 4 months of training :confused3

I'm currently running about a 10-11 minute mile (11 uphill, closer to 10.5 downhill - we only have uphill and downhill in Pgh - no flat areas :rotfl2:). I think I'll start taking longer walk breaks to see if that helps my sore backside! It's weird though, because I feel good while I'm running, not sore at all - and I'm stretching really well both before and after....oh well, hopefully it will stop soon. Other than that I really feel great - and I never thought I would enjoy running. It's very addictive though :thumbsup2

QOTD: Is anyone doing any weight loss or exercise plans to build up endurance prior to walking a million miles a day at the parks?[/QUOTE]

Last year I lost 30 pounds on a low carb program, but unfortunately put almost all of it back being on two doses of steroids due to a back injury. I started Paleo last week and am very happy so far. That combined with a walk during lunch every day should really help this quest.

My mom is trying to change her diet to loose weight, I am thinking about it alot..and doing nothing. I am about 20lbs over my ideal weight so it wouldn't take that much to get back there. My question is: where do you all find the time to run/walk miles in a day? I work full time, commute an hour and 20 minutes a day and then there's the kids and homework, not to mention house work.

I am with you. I used to get up really early and work out before work......but now I have 2 kids who DON'T SLEEP AT NIGHT! Ugh

It's hard, I know. That's why I've been so inconsistent with it -- I don't work outside the home, but I do go to school full time and since I'm in my second-to-last semester, the coursework is really difficult and time consuming. DH commutes over an hour each way :scared1: so he's gone for 12+ hours every day, leaving me to tend to the house and kiddos. I utilize the free babysitting room at the Y and run on a treadmill or the track, and run outside on the weekends when DH is home.

I walk DD1 3/4 of a mile each way to school and back in the morning and then pick her up in the afternoon. That's 3 miles right there. My wife and I will also walk together after the kids go to bed or if the time and weather permit we'll walk as a family while the kids ride their bikes. Usually we can get in another 2 miles with that. We've also tried to find ways to walk when we're out and about. We'll park the car at one location and then walk to the various locations we have to do errands at.

We also have a treadmill and an elliptical which helps when the weather isn't cooperating.

I started this journey 58 pounds over my ideal weight and 78 pounds over the suggested BMI for my height. I'm down 16.5 pounds as of today. My wife is doing a similar plan and has far less to lose. I won't hit my target until October but my wife should hit her target just before we leave for Disney, so she has a goal to have a new wardrobe by then. :thumbsup2

My question is: where do you all find the time to run/walk miles in a day?

I've only found the time since my youngest started 1st grade last year. When the kids were little and home most of the day, it was impossible to find time to excercise. Also, I work out of my home, and though I do have client meetings out of the house, it's about 70% at home -30% meetings. This makes it much easier to get things done at home - for example, I can be changing laundry and starting dinner as I'm working!
I try to squeak out about 1 to 1 1/2 hours 4-5 times a week for exercise (includes commuting to a class or the trail). Sometimes it's early morning, sometimes middle of the day, sometimes evening - just depends on the day.

As the kids get older, they become more independent and involved with their own lives, and you'll find more time for yourself!
