Minnesota Governor cancels all public schools on Monday

Hey, I'm an Ole from the same era--I was on campus during the Halloween blizzard.:wave2: I remember looking out the classroom window (class in the old science building) in the morning and seeing the snow start, and thinking that Halloween was awfully early for snow…. We live in MN , but my...

Fiction book for an DS9 (almost 10)?

If you want to go dystopian (hunger games)…a YA series is the Maze Runner by James Dashner. My DS read them last year when he was in fourth grade. What else…Garth Nix has a couple of middle grade series that DS really liked, Keys to the Kingdom was one and Troubletwisters was another...

What are your kids going to be for Halloween this year?

Normally, I just lurk on the DIS but couldn't resist responding to this one.... DS (10.5) decided last night that he wanted to go as the 11th Doctor. So this morning I bought him boots (Target), a fez (halloween pop-up store) and a checked blazer (thrift store). The bow tie he already...

    Hunger Games for Middle Schoolers?

My son is only 10 (early fifth grade). I have a "you have to read the book before you see the movie" policy, and he hasn't shown any interest in reading Hunger Games yet, so he hasn't seen the movie. That said, two years ago, many of the kids in his third grade class were reading the book...

Did You Know You Were Pregnant Before You "Knew?"

Yes, I did. I almost fell asleep while grocery shopping. I remember I was in the frozen food aisle and the only reason I stayed semi-alert was because I was so cold. I tested later that day :-)

    Do you miss it

I don't miss it, because I do both. I like the Kindle app, which I use on my ipad mini. My mother and I share the account and we read a lot of the same books, so it is nice to be able to share stuff that way. Our public library has a pretty good selection of Kindle books, and I can also read...

    Kids & Strangers' Dogs?

Here is the other POV....the mother of the child who wants to say hi to the dog. DS, who is 10 now, has been trained since he could walk and talk to ask first, and if the response is "no", that is that. He will usually offer a cheerful, "thanks anyway" and/or ask about what kind of a dog it...

Food you hate to admit you love?

If you ever see Kemps brand cinnamon ice cream.....don't buy it!! I picked it up in the grocery store when it was offered as a "seasonal special" last year, and it was gross. Pink colored (?!?), with little brown specks that I'm sure were supposed to be cinnamon....tasted artificial, really...

I have a boy, and he's a little older....but he was in a similar situation at that age.... A few ideas..Gollywhopper Games by Jody Feldman. Kids competing in a big game in a toy company...and you get to solve the puzzles with them as they go. Really fun read. Guys Read Funny Business...

Acivitiy books/Games/things to keep 8yr DD busy during our drive to WDW?!

If you all enjoy Harry Potter, I highly recommend those on audio. The man who narrated them is just amazing, he did a really good job with all the different voices. For books for her to read: depending on reading level/interest: DS loved the Puppy Place series, a different dog is featUred...

Need Help from parents of 10 year old boys *UPDATED. 06-02-13

I have a 10 year old son who loves to read, so if yours does: DS's absolute favorite birthday gift was his Kindle Paperwhite. Then Amazon gift cards work for any occasion after that!

End-of-the-school-year PRAISES! Let's share the good stuff!

My DS (fourth grade, age 10) absolutely loves school, but has always been a little socially awkward. His teacher this year is young (might be 30), male, cool...and totally gets my geeky book nerd. This year has been less about academic growth (although that has happened as well), and more...

    Facebook, the new Christmas newsletter

For any of you that are annoyed by parents bragging/complaining/whatever on FBI, check out **** parents blog. Soooo funny, in a completely wrong way.....

What are your favorite pizza toppings?

Pepperoni, green olives (I can't stand black olives, yuck!), and onion would be my absolute favorite. The weirdest pizza I've had was a BLT pizza. It involved ranch dressing, bacon, tomatoes, lettuce....Tasted good, but odd texture from the lettuce .

Thinking of adding to our family....a 2nd doggy that is!

We have neighbors that have a Havanese and she is an absolute delight. Energetic, playful....smart as a whip. (She knows when my son's school bus goes by, and cries until they come outside to see him!) If you didn't need a low shed dog, I would recommend what my old dog was, a cavalier king...

Did you like Lincoln (the movie)

My history loving 10 year old DS both enjoyed it. It really made the situation (politics and all) come alive in a way that textbooks never could.

Does anyone find it odd there are no new Board Games?

Are you talking about big box store (Target, Toysrus, Walmart, etc.) type games? Or stuff that you would be more likely to find in a specialized (gaming/comic/etc.) store? I've noticed something within the past year--even Target is starting to carry more "real" (that's what my 10 year old...

When did your child start wearing shoes??

And then there was my DS, who hated Robeez so much, he shrieked every time I put them on, and would not calm down until I took them off. I think he liked having nothing on his feet, not even socks. (Okay, I put those on when it was cold, though...) He started walking around 9 months, but I...

    Parental Guidance (film)?

Well, not if you had my 10 year old DS....I was a bit hesitant to take him to Lincoln, but he really wanted to go. Of course, he *is* bonkers for history, especially Civil War. Not that Lincoln was really about the war itself--it wasn't, it was more political--but DS love it! YMMV, obviously.
