ZIKA IN FLORIDA!!! GOV. CONFIRMS LOCAL TRANSMISSION

I would like to know the answer to this as well. Although it's starting to become clear.

I'm wondering too. And the OP didn't even link the correct news article. The one she linked was about FDA actions regarding blood donations, and still said that local transmission was only a possibility.

What she should have linked was this one:

http://www.npr.org/sections/health-...-local-mosquitoes-have-transmitted-zika-virus

And as far as I'm concerned, since this is limited to the southern counties, it's still just a watch and see for the Orlando area.

Haven't had a chance to read the whole thread, but I'm middle aged and my wife has zero chance of getting pregnant (if she does, the doctor will have some 'splainin' to do :scratchin). So while I'm certainly concerned for those who may be effected, it won't personally alter our plans.

Right...and it's not like anyone from Miami or Ft. Lauderdale would ever go to WDW during school summer vacation!

Although they might it doesn't mean the mosquitos in Orlando currently carry the virus thus making it transmittable there. I did still say individuals should decide and be aware and take steps they feel comfortable with.

I was going to comment regarding my thoughts...but then the OP responded again and I decided this is exactly like all the threads created (with the majority closed by moderators) regarding the alligator attacks when it was fairly evident the person either a) had their own agenda b) wanted to stir the pot to just stir the pot c) thread got out of the OPs control too quickly d) any combination of ones listed e) some other reason unknown to the rest of the DISers

*There is no offense meant by my above statement just an observation*

barring the drama nonsense...

IF I was of child bearing age/pregnant this would scare the bejesus out of me. There is nothing that would compel me to head to an area that has confirmed local cases. It is not worth the risk. No vacation is worth the possibility of contracting Zika and the potential outcome to a child. This is such a scary disease and I feel for all the people dealing with the reality of it

I think the sensible thing for anyone contemplating a visit to anywhere with a Zika outbreak would be to check with your OB/GYN and see what they advise. I'm sure they are following the science even more closely than anonymous people here on the DIS Community Board.

Ok, I admit I am very confused. You are the OP of this thread, right?

Certainly those planning to get pregnant or pregnant will forgo a trip to WDW with this latest news!!!

If you think its all hype why the bold caps and all the exclamation points?

Especially if you read the linked article and realize the 'gov.' confirmed no such thing.

I agree with this.

I'll also add that for most people, a trip to WDW/USF/SW involves a significant expenditure of time, energy and money.

If there is something a person is fearful enough of, be it Zika, alligators, protests, terrorism, Ebola, etc., that it would have a significant negative affect on the trip, then put it off.

WDW and the rest will still be there after this is in hand.

I agree with this 100%! I have two adult children, so I would go without question, if I was younger and still thinking of kids at some point, I would absolutely not go.

Exactly - my concern is for those people too.

I was disappointed to hear this news. My husband and I just booked a trip for the first week of September. But we're also hoping to start trying for a baby in September so we definitely don't want to risk it.

But they will if those infected by mosquitos in the south decide to travel to Disney and then are bitten by local mosquitos who are infected by the virus carrying person.
