Yucky Recipes From Yesteryear

Yup, and there is nothing wrong with Spam Upside Down Pie. Spam and bread and then you dip it in cheese sauce or marinara.

Such a nice pineapple. MMMM. I think I'll have some. What? It's Liverwurst, Mayo, and Worcestershire?

My grandmother used to cut up hot dogs and mushrooms and put it in beef gravy. As I remember she served it over macaroni. Yes, it was disgusting but we were under orders to clean our plates at their house no matter what.

One of my favorite websites is Lileks, specifically The Institute of Official Cheer. He has an entire section of the Institute devoted to gross food:

When I was a kid I'd occasionally see a jello mold with various ingredients. Cottage cheese in lime Jello was a big hit at church dinners. Yeah it was pretty gross.

I was at the tail end of the gross jello mold concoctions. My aunt’s mother used to make some doozies for the big family gatherings. My grandma made some too, but they were slightly more palatable. Haven’t seen a jello mold salad in decades.

My aunt use to always bring a green jello mold with shredded carrots, cottage cheese, and pineapple to family get-togethers. This would have been back in the 60’s and 70’s. I thought it was disgusting. 🤮

But have you ever tried tongue???:smooth:
My family used to eat tongue all the time when I was a kid; we loved it. By the time I was in my teens, I couldn't even be in the house when my mom cooked it. :crazy2: I never ate it again until I was into my 60s. Went to a taco party and one of the fillings was tongue, but lemme tell ya, that tongue was a whole different dish than the boiled, sliced thing my mother loved.

I had tongue tacos and they were amazing.

As for some of these other dishes they came out of tough times in some cases. Onions stuffed with beans? Cheap and filling. Leftovers in jello basically free and different every week!

My mother grew up eating blood pudding. :faint: She grew up near a food district in the city and this is what was affordable.

How about liver and onions? Mom tried to get us to eat it. No way do I ever fix it!

Ooh, you've reminded me of another at church dinners: Shredded carrots in orange Jello.:crazy2:
:crazy2:

This is DH's favorite side dish, my DM makes it for him occasionally.
It's the only Jello he will eat.
