WARNING: this message involves death. It's not grisly or violent, but just thought you should be forewarned...

So we (DM, DS and I) check into FW in our new-to-us motorhome, get all settled in for our second night, and are happy with our (WDW) world. At midnight, we hear a *scream*, and the 50ish lady in the motorhome next to us comes running out of her MH, holding her young granddaughter and dog, wailing, "He's dead, he's dead". By the time DM and I look at each other like "what should we do?", other campers have come running, and, within ten minutes, it's like an episode of COPS, at least six squads, an ambulance, etc, all parked on top of us with lights on bright, radios squawking, etc. I found out later that her DH, only 50, had had bronchitis, stayed at the campground that day because he didn't feel well, and "died in his sleep". Basically the whole "neighborhood" was up until 5 a.m. when the authorities finally finished. I don't relate this story to be macabre, but because I was so impressed with how WDW handled it.

I talked the next day with the neighbor on the other side of this lady, who had been one of the first ones on the scene. She told me that WDW took this lady, GD, and dog, and put them up in a cabin for free for the rest of their trip. A CM was sent to the trading post for groceries and drinks for them, even though it was the middle of the night. Both the lady and the neighbor were sent huge bouquets from the florist. WDW helped her coordinate getting relatives there to help her. And (this still gives me the chills) a bagpiper walked through her loop the next day playing "Amazing Grace" in memory of her DH.

This would be a terrible thing to have happen to anybody, but really goes to show what a class act WDW is. I felt terrible for her, but at least she was somewhere where people care.

:(

The poor family. I always think stories of dying at WDW are the saddest. :( Not sure why though. I would want to "go" when I'm somewhere that makes me happy. But it kinda ruins WDW for the rest of the family forever.

The bagpipes would have creeped me out.

Thinking of that family. :(

I am glad you shared this with us...nice to see the mouse has such a big heart. A prayer already said for that family.

DM, who was with us, is a music teacher, so you should have seen the look she gave me when we heard that haunting sound waft towards us across the "swamp". DS, who is only 7, just wanted to know if it was the guy from Off Kilter!

(who doesn't think WDW would be such a bad place to leave this earth, but please not at only 50...)

What a sad story but beautiful at the same time. I am glad to hear that Disney did such a good job of taking care of them all. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

That poor woman must have been so distraught. It sounds like WDW handled it well, though.

Sad story, yes, but thanks for sharing the story of a stranger and why we do seem to place Disney in a special place. My best wishes and prayers for the family.

 OMG! Bagpipes?!! Eerie! Wait till I tell the gang this one!

What a tragedy for that family. My prayers are with them. It does sound like WDW handled it very considerately.

I have read a lot of resort bashing posts lately. It's nice to hear they took such good care of the family.

Thoughts and prayers with them all.

When we were in FW in Nov of 2000 we listened to the "bagpipe man". We were out in the golf cart and heard the bagpipes, so we followed the sound. We found the man back past the 2000 loop toward creekside meadow. He was a very nice gentleman and played a song just for us. If I remember correctly, I think he was a guest at FW. Has anyone else ever heard him playing in FW? I think it was nice of him to play for the DW who lost her DH.

How sad for this lady!!! I'm so glad Disney treated her so well in her time of need.

What a horrible shock for her. How sad. :(

Good to hear that the Management at FW handled it so well, I can't imagine the shock she is in right now.

I love the bagpipes such a nice sound. i think it was a great thing for someone to do. it's music you feel with your soul, and heart. just how you feel a death good choice. i think. sad story:(

Very sad. I just shudder to think of how much this must happen. Glad they handled it well.

Wow - How sad for that family :( :( Sounds like the Mouse really tried to ease the pain as much as they could for them...

That is so sad. When I think of DW I think of it as a place that nothing bad happens. But that isn't the case, death has no boundies as far as where and when it is our time to depart this world. My prayers and thoughts are with the family. I am so glad Disney has shown some compassion in this time of sorrow.

How sad! My prayers are with that poor family. I am glad that WDW did what they could to make dealing with it as easy as possible. While in some respects it would be nice to spend your final days happy, on the other hand, not being at home would contribute even more to that feeling of no control you get when someone dies.
