Our family will be heading to Alaska in a few weeks on the Wonder, and I'm trying to figure out if it makes sense to pick up the DisneyBand+. Both our kids will be enrolled in Oceaneer Club but won't be old enough to check themselves in/out. Some of the fun features seem to only exist on the newer boats as well. Help me understand, is it really just a convenience factor of having tapping your wrist on your stateroom or to pay for your drink instead of having to get out your room card? Is there anything that makes them totally worth it?

You're correct that it's more a convenience thing on the Wonder than anything else. From memory they light up during some of the entertainment (eg deck parties/fireworks) but otherwise they act like a room key on your wrist.

We took our bands on the Wonder in October last year (2 adults and 2 kids, 10 & 8), and we ended up taking them off by the second day as they weren’t worth the trouble. We had trouble activating them onboard initially, and then they were temperamental with whether they would open the door etc. We just went straight back to lanyards and cards, and didn’t have to worry about charging them.

If you're not going to go on multiple cruises or use them at DL/WDW, then my opinion is that it's not worth the expense for just one cruise.
Save that money for excursions.

We are going on the Wish later this year, I would assume things are the same on the Wonder. On the wish, kids going into the clubs will need to have the magic + bands, however, they will give the kids a band if they do not have one, you just need to return it by the end of the cruise, or you will be charged $25/ea.
