Your Unpopular Opinions

I think that Americans are stupid when it comes to gun control and maternity leave.

Amen to that.

I'm going to say one that just popped up.

I think we are starting to use mental health issues to not deal with our problems,

yesterday or the day before a women plows her car into a crowd of revelers at a homecoming festival, 4 people are dead including a 2 year old. She allegedly was drunk.
she has been charged with 4 counts of 2nd degree murder.

Her attorney says she was not drunk she is mentally ill.

That is also the go to "my bad" card played with every mass shooting.

I'm

I dislike people who won't put their money where their mouth is. They bad mouth retailers who pay poor wages, but they still shop there. They're "pro labor", but drive a Toyota. Etc
.
OMG YES! If you want to see change you have to do more than post a meme about whatever it is you want changed!
I do find it to be an unpopular opinion though.

Likewise if you refuse to vote, I don't feel your opinion carries as much weight as someone who put in the time and effort to try to elect representatives whose policies they can live with. (and i think voting in local elections and school board ones, etc as at least as important as the big national ones).

A few of mine

Pumpkin in beer just awful
Golf is just a way to ruin a perfectly good walk (and I have ruined many).
Most people can't leave well enough alone.
If someone wants to give you something they are going to get rid of, don't take it. In most cases it cost you more than just going out and buying the same thing on your own.

I disliked being at WDW when the Christmas decorations were out. It just reminded me of everything that had to get done in the next few weeks and made me feel less relaxed on vacation.

I have many, most are non-PC of course so bring on the PC police. I'll throw these 3 out to start.

1) We should bring back public executions - we have nothing now to defer criminals - I do a crime I get 3 hots and a cot, cable TV, recreation facilities.

2) Everyone should own a gun and take a required training class along with - an armed society is a polite society

3) Most people who claim to have a good well adjusted child simply have a brat, but they're too busy living the yuppie lifestyle to pay enough attention to their kids to see it

OK, but you asked for it...

Disney:
  • Children should not be on leashes.
  • Dole Whips aren't that great.
  • IllumiNations is boring.
  • Epcot is boring.
  • Animal Kingdom is just a glorified Zoo.
Um politics... this might get me points.
  • Feeling bad about Columbus is pointless. It was over 500 years ago.
  • Social Justice Warriors should get off the Internet and actually do something useful.
  • There is no war on Christmas
  • I would be a harsh but benevolent dictator... Or ... The US should write a new Constitution.
  • Most politicians are selfish.
  • We are living in a new Gilded Age.

Everything Else
  • Pets are pets, not babies (but damn, are they adorable).
  • There is something wrong with people who don't like Star Wars.
  • Patrick Bateman hallucinated all of the murders he committed in American Psycho.
  • All red wine tastes the same.
  • Anyone under than age of 40 who smokes is a moron.

The DIS really limits this, but I'll try ;)

Kids today are WAY too pampered and provided for.

You do not need alcohol to have a good time. PG fun is still FUN, it does not mean you are immature!

Christmas music is great any time of year.

Frozen stunk ;) I haven't seen Inside Out. I'm too afraid after Frozen.

You should pay your bills and live within your means. Going without something because you can't afford it is not a tragedy, stop acting like it is.

Cilantro, brussel sprouts and Chai tea are gross.

I agree with you except for the Brussels Sprouts. - I actually like those. (But my DS makes up for that in his complete hatred of Frozen.) Fa la la la la...la la la la.

This is a BIGGIE for me....I HATE THAT

I was NEVER MRS John Smith

I came of age in the beginning of the woman's movement-and took my DH's lastname-but DONT call me Mrs John Smith(all names made up)

On the wedding announcement in a couple weeks my new DIL's parents will be listed as Mr and Mrs Tim Brown....but I have insisted ours reads , "son of John and Mary Smith"

Reminded me of another - I hate the women's lib movement. I also hate the "treat me like I am a wife in the 50's...I will cook, clean, raise the kids, etc., all you need to do is work and read the paper". I just want to BE.

1. Moms OR dads who call themselves "stay at home parents" when their children are 5+ and in school full time. I think the term you are looking for is unemployed.

I could not agree more.

I think homework for elementary students is not necessary at all and in some cases causes more harm than good.

Truth!

Would you feel the same way if your son chose a more expensive education. We only saved around $150,000 for college for our 5 children. Sure, we could afford to fund community college for all of them, but I can't see any of them staying home, never mind community college. Both DH and I went away to college, he has his MBA, I'm 2 classes from my MA, and we both feel the exoerience of going away to college is worth the price tag. Dd19 is hoping to get an RA position to help with expenses, and all of them are expected to work their butts off during school breaks.

I agree - I think moving away for college is essential (and, by moving away, I mean not in mom and dad's house. Dorm at a local campus, across the state, or across the country). If my kid wants to do community college first, fine, but he will be staying in the dorms there, or getting an apartment nearby. Living outside of my roof = learning independence and life skills is just as important as the other courses he is going to take to further himself.

I don't like the October Breast Cancer Awareness stuff

Made me think of another one - I think the Susan G Komen foundation is a scam and refuse to donate even a penny to it. I roll my eyes at people who do the 3 Day. If you truly want to see BC gone, donate somewhere else. The whole "Pink October" is ridiculous.

  • All red wine tastes the same.
  • Anyone under than age of 40 who smokes is a moron.

As a Wine Educator (I teach college-level wine courses), I'd say that you either drink a lot of soda or smoke. I'm guessing not the smoking since you called people who smoke morons. The majority of my students who can't discriminate between tastes in wine generally do one or the other.

There's nothing really wrong with something like Sutter Home wines, but if wines like that are all someone has tasted they've missed out.

How do you feel about someone using the term "jammy" to describe a wine?

I thought of some more:

Disney-related:
  • Unless it's a 2-3 bedroom DVC villa, you would have to pay me to stay on-site at WDW. Charging $300+ a night for a deluxe (aka--same level as a regular Marriott or Hilton) where I can share a room with my 2 year old sleeping 10 feet away from me and my husband for a week sounds like hell. Bussing is not a benefit to me--I have no interest in waiting around for a bus to take me where I'm going and potentially not having a seat while being crammed in next to hot, tired people. I'll take my $500-$700/week 2 bedroom condo and rental car any day.
  • Despite the recent ticket price hikes, I still think the per-day value of what you get for a day's worth of entertainment at the parks is pretty decent. Tickets for most concerts and touring broadway shows I'm interested is over $100 for 2-3 hours of entertainment.
Parenting:
  • Moms who identify as "cloth diapering, baby-wearing, anti-vaxing, co-sleeping, attachment parenting etc" annoy me! In person, I keep my opinions to myself, and I don't think any one of those particular things is "wrong" (well, except someone who chooses to completely un-vaccinate)--but some moms just make that their whole identity as a parent and try to push it on others.
  • I'm all for schedules and cry-it-out sleep training. If you are complaining that your 10 month old is still waking up 5 times a night to eat--maybe stop co-sleeping and letting the baby nurse-on-demand as a 10 month old if you actually want to sleep.
  • Yes, I will be bringing my infant and toddler into restaurants to eat. Please don't give me a dirty look or sigh loudly when my family sits next to you. We enjoy dining out and if our children start crying, yelling and becoming disruptive, we will promptly remove them. But don't judge us until you see how the meal goes.
Other:
  • If you post a "selfie" picture, I will think you are narcissistic.
  • I don't believe the United Way and Susan J Komen foundations are good charities to donate to.
  • I won't go too political here, but my hope-beyond-hope is that in my lifetime, Article V of the Constitution will be invoked to call for a Convention of the States to restrict the power and jurisdiction of the federal government.

When I drink red wine, all I get is a numb tongue. I even started a thread about it last year

http://www.disboards.com/threads/red-wine-always-numbs-my-tongue.3341512/

Oddly, I don't get that to white wine. I do drink a lot of diet soda... maybe that's it?

I was curious, so I googled... Here's what I found:
http://www.winespectator.com/drvinny/show/id/5325

From the Wine Spectator column:
"I have two theories about the sensation you're describing. The first is what you're suspecting—that the alcohol is out of balance with the wine's other components. A wine like this is sometimes described as being "hot." It's similar to the feeling in your mouth after drinking a shot of whiskey or gargling with strong mouthwash—I'd describe it as a burning sensation, usually toward the back of the throat.

My other theory is that the wine may be what's called "astringent," which refers to a puckering, drying sensation from wines with high tannins, like you'd get from tea that's been over-brewed. Astringent wines are prickly, harsh and coarse. Perhaps there's a combination of factors—a wine high in alcohol with astringent tannins could result in your numb tongue."

My comment: Maybe April will chime in and give her thoughts on this.

We teach our students that whatever you like, you like - we don't discriminate based on price. ;) My favorite wine in the entire world is a $13.99 bottle of Meritage made by Trader Joe's. I've had $300 bottles of wine that couldn't compare to it.

Diet soda will do it as well - really, we've seen that any soda consumption masks the ability to taste nuances of wine. I think it's the intense sweetness, honestly.

And I don't have any problems with the term "jammy." People should describe wine in whatever terms they can best understand. No wine snobbery here!

Okay…y'all asked for it.
I think there are times that children should be seen and not heard. Not everything should revolve around their every whim. We had a rain event this weekend. I can't tell you how many Facebook posts I saw going on about how they had to find fun activities for the kids. Let them play and carry on. They don't need special activities all the time.
I'm a preschool teacher. If you drop your child off, knowing that we consistently have problems with his behavior, maybe you don't need to go to Pilates, bible study, ladies breakfast, whatever. Maybe you need to stay home with the child and teach him how to act in public. If you can't control your child, then you shouldn't get breaks and inflict him on anyone else. Stay home and parent your child.
