Your opinion on "age-appropriate" dressing??

I'm convinced no one of our generation will wear these--our generation's version will probably be yoga pants ;) --so the polyester elastic-waist pants will disappear from the racks!

In my 40's here, and no urge to wear those elastic polyesters either!! But yoga pants? Not sure those would be the best option for the older and untoned. And I speak for myself.

For now it's just jeans. Maybe when I'm 70 I'll give up the search for perfect clothes and wear homemade house dresses like my mama did. She always looked comfy and used the prettiest fabrics. :goodvibes

You may look half your age, but if you're over 40 there are certain things you should never wear -- no matter what.

That's the word from fashion guru Tim Gunn, who serves as the mentor on the hit reality series 'Project Runway' that premiered on Bravo in 2004.

When Gunn was a guest on the 'Oprah' show, he laid down the law to the over-40 crowd.

If you're over 40, you should never wear:

1. Horizontal stripes

2. Jackets that hit at mid-thigh

3. Pleated pants

4. Double-breasted blazers

5. Capri-length pants

6. Low-rise jeans

I get this. You wouldn't catch me dead in them at 20.

2. Jackets that hit at mid-thigh

A little too 80's for me.

3. Pleated pants

Not my style anyway.

4. Double-breasted blazers

Too 80's.

5. Capri-length pants

I'm guilty, and will continue being guilty as long as they're in style. I do NOT get this one at all!?!?!?!

6. Low-rise jeans

Okay... guilty of this one too, but it's all still where it should be, and I don't wear them so low that my stuff shows. I also don't show my stomach, so what difference does it make?

I said in an earlier post that my 74 yr old mother wears these all the time. They are her SHORTS for the warm weather. I wear capris alot in the summer when we go out. It is too hot for pants and at 47 I don't look all that great in shorts. At least not the short short ones. So capris it is.

I shop the same place I shopped 20 years ago and that is the GAP. I used to shop at Urban outfitters constantly when I was 19/20/21 and LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it. But now I go with my teenage daughter there and watch her shop at my old favorite hang out. Sometimes you have to let go and pass it on. Sometimes I admit I will fit a bit of nastalgia there, but then I realize that I am content with where I am now.
Anyway, I hope I am never too old to shop at the gap and and banana republic.

I just don't get what is wrong with capris for women over 40??? Would the fashion gurus prefer shorts? Or are we all just supposed to sweat in the summer?

I agree with all the others on the list of no-no's but can't get with the capris. :sad2:

I don't get it either. I only own one pair of capris because they all seem to make *me* look frumpy (I think I just haven't found the right capri style for my body) but I think there are many older women, especially with thin legs, that look great in them.

A woman in my office, who is well into her 60s, wears them everyday and I think they look fabulous on her. She obviously buys the ones that fit her well.

I'm 50 and have a couple of really cute dresses and sweaters from Urban Outfitters. It is my dd's favorite, so I am there quite a bit with her, and some of their stuff has a really nice vintage look.

98% of the store is too young for me, but there are a few things I can pull off!!! And there are shoes and even some cute jewelry.

Leave it to me to try to talk someone into spending money!!! :rotfl:

I've started wearing more skirts and dresses - but I agree. I think capris are for everyone.

I'm 50 and just started wearing capris last year. I had trouble finding the right ones - if they are too tight they make your hips look huge. But I found a few pairs that fit good and I love them. I also agree that they are a lot more flattering than shorts for older women, especially if you have a little extra around the knee area.

I never understood MEN making women's fashion decisions. After all, they are the ones who put us in those torturous high heels!

DW is 52 and is a size 0 and buys most of her clothes at Banana Republic. I'd say she doesn't "dress her age" but as long as it looks good on her, I'm all for it! ;)

I do love their stuff. I really like the style there and it makes me so happy that dd loves it so much. I love vintage stuff so much.

Another instance where I can't recommend Banana Republic enough.

They have several different styles, that range from above-the-waist, to below, and several different lengths, from Bermuda-type shorts, to right-above-the-ankle capris.

If you can't find anything that you like there, I'd be surprised. They have at least six different types out right now. :thumbsup2

I'll have to give them another try. I think I'm one of the few people that has not had good luck at Banana Republic. Granted, I am shopping at their outlet store and I don't know if that makes a difference.

I find most of their tops too skimpy; i.e., most are sleeveless or plunging. Just way too bare. I've tried some pants on there and like them but they didn't have my size on that particular day. Guess I better go back!

I get all the items except the capris. I will be 38 soon so I guess I have two more years of capris:confused3 I dont see anything wrong with them.

I also dont see anything wrong with low rise if you have the body for it and your belly isnt hanging out. I herad they fit very nice, I cant wear them because my gut needs something to hold it in.

Where was the list of what to wear?????

I hate shopping, I want Garanimals for grownups!!!!!

I will have to give Bannana Republic a try

I've never had luck at the outlet stores, nor have I ever seen their outlet clothes, in the stores before. I don't know where they come from.

I have to admit - I'm not too happy with their tops this year, and I think their pants are too long. It was one of the things I always loved about BR. I'm only 5'2" and I wear a size 0. I could always order a zero and they were always the right length.

This year, I've had issues with Banana Republic, Gap, Ann Taylor, White House Black Market, Ann Taylor Loft, and Jimmy Z's. Either I'm shrinking at the ripe old age of 40, or everyone else is making their pants longer. I prefer to think it's them, and refuse to think it's me. :upsidedow

Harumph.

Here I am on my 49th birthday - my kids take a photo of my in front of the roses each year:

Now ladies, honestly...should I put away those jeans?

Tim Gunn, if you want me to put on high waisted mom jeans, you better have your designers make some in a size 0. Make it work!

At 5'7" I think that's why I loved their pants so much. They were perfect for me. But the 6 was just a tad to clingy and the 10 was way to big and I couldn't find an 8 to save my soul!

I am pretty sure that most of what is in the outlet does not come from their regular stores (Gap outlet, Old Navy outlet are the same way). However, when I do go into the regular Banana Republic I "LOVE" their stuff, but I do get a bit of sticker shock. I told my daughter that Banana Republic is the old people's Abercrombie and Fitch!!

Maybe I should just go back there and splurge.

As for Ann Taylor, I have been seriously unhappy with them for a few years. I bought some great jeans there and pants there about 4 years ago. I am still wearing the jeans--love them. Now when I go, again, no sleeves and all the skirts skim at the most unflattering part of my knee or they are short and A-line and I end up looking like an umbrella.
