Camping this weekend, my DS, 11, learned that he cannot properly operate a hammock. On Saturday the thing swung around and flipped him over. He fell, maybe 2 feet, onto his head and neck.

Now, I really try to avoid seeking medical advice on the web, but I'm stuck on this one. What do you think? His whole back was hurting yesterday. He's moving around - we even took a hike and a bike ride later on yesterday. I'm thinking he just jarred everything badly. I'm thinking that if he had any real head/neck/shoulder injuries, he would be having more difficulties moving around. I hate to get into the whole x-ray ordeal, but of course I want to make sure he's okay. What to you all think? Trip to the doctors? I guess we probably should.
:confused3

Well, he doesn't have a concussion. He would be throwing up. Usually a concussion happens from a fall from your own height or higher.

Probalby just bruising, stretching. I'd probably wait a day....or call your dr and just see what they say. If there is nothing more than aches....they may not want to x-ray.

I disagree. You don't always throw up with a concussion. I would get him x-rayed to be safe. You don't want to have a bigger problem later with bones or muscles. the least that would happen is that he will get some muscle relaxers to help with the pain.

I agree with the PP...

I don't want to scare you, but I fell in December and walked around feeling odd for almost 2 weeks before I went. I had a 2nd degree concussion (never threw up) and a HUGE contusion on my brain....

My son also has broken 2 bones, and we were unsure about it both times. Better to be safe than sorry..
 for your son.

I have to disagree if I took my kids for X-rays every time they fell 2 feet they would be glowing!!!! Too many X-rays aren't good either. Sounds like he is fine if he could do all that activity without any real pain. Of course he will be sore he bruised things. Even if he had a mild concussion they wouldn't do anything and it is after the 24 hours they tell you to observe him. Give him some Motrin and then remind him how funny he looked flipping out of the hammock and how you won't be forgetting it any time soon. And will giggle whenever a hammock appears for a long time. I also assume it was onto the ground and not cement. Think about all the soccer kids who take flying thuds when someone trips them, they hit a lot harder and get up and keep playing.

This thread is working like my own mind is. I'm not too worried about a concussion - he doesn't have a bump on his head, even. He landed like head, then neck, then shoulder. I think it just jarred his whole spine. Now that he's up and moving around, I'm less worried. He's ouchy when he moves around, but I just have him resting and am letting him skip his swim meet.

Funny - the kids were being daredevils with bikes and scooters all weekend, and my kid gets injured sleeping (trying to at least!)
