Your favorite places to camp

Before we bought our own property up north, we had several favorite places to camp.

1) Hartwick Pines, near Grayling, Michigan, just off 1-75: It's a state park but they've made big improvements, and there are lots of beautiful walking trails, lakes, etc.

2) Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan: The Aune Osborne campground. The freighters going through the locks come up very close to the campground, it's fun to see those big ships close like that.

Anywhere in the upper peninsula of Michigan! :)

#1 All-time Fave: Yellowstone~

Topsail Hill Preserve SP--east of Destin, FL. sea turtle sanctuary

Carlsbad(NM) KOA--check out both Carlsbad Caverns and Roswell, NM

Oasis RV resort Las VEgas--where else can you stay in LV for $30/night?

Seaquest SP(western WA)--at the base of Mount St. Helens, awesome

Natural arch state park in KY, Cumberland Falls State Park, and Mammoth CAve National PArk.

We loved this trip we stayed a few nights at each. Terrific hiking at all. Cumberland had a pool and very affordable horseback riding.

Near Mammoth cave, there are a lot of attractions. Kentucky down under is terrific, there was also an alpine slide near the camp ground.

Another great area is Hocking Hills in OH. Especially in the spring whe the falls are running heavy.

We've been to all the other parks in that area but not Topsail. It's twice as much to stay there, but I hear it has a pool. Can you see the turtles? I'd love to try it some day.

Someone recommended Cloudland Canyon in N. GA to us. Any reviews?

WE've never seen turtles but we've seen their nests. I think you have to be there in the spring and they don't let you have any lights on the beach after dark so the turtles won't get off course. Topsail is lovely. It has lots of trails through the nature preserve. THey have a tram that takes you the 0.7mile to the beach. You can't drive there because the trail goes through the preserve, but you can ride your bike or walk down there and ride back on the tram. Topsail has a small but nice pool, too.

I know it's expensive for a Florida SP but to us it's well worth it. We go nearly every summer. And surprise! No mosquitos!

Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park near Orick, CA, is a favorite. Headed there this weekend too. Here is one redwood in that park.

And I very much like the northern Oregon coast, often camping at Nehalem Bay State Park. That park is in the backdrop of the next image, between the bay and the ocean. The town is Manzanita on the right. The photo is our oldest son on the top of Neahkahnie Mountain trail. Parking for trailhead next to Hy. 101

I grew up camping in California and now live in Maryland too!
I haven't found any where I love here yet...maybe this summer.
I love Yosemite (of course), Lake Almanor (near Lassen, in California), and Fort Stevens on the Coast of Oregon (just up the road from Nehalem and Manzanita mentioned in another post). Those are all West Coast campsites though. Not much help probably!
We haven't really done much camping since we moved here. We've been so busy being tourists and staying in hotels. I need to camp this summer!!!

Oh that picture just makes me miss Oregon. So beautiful!!!

Colorado has some really great camping sites. We've been to some up by Aspen and Vail. There is also a really great one by Leadville. We love our outdoors here!

If you want family camping in Kentucky, Carter Caves is nice. In Tennessee, anywhere in the Smokey Mountains is great - we love Cades Cove Campground and Smokemont is great, too.

For more primitive camping, The Red River Gorge here in Kentucky is great.

In Michigan, it's fun to camp on one of the beaches of Lake Michigan. We like Warren Dunes State Park.

Wisconsin:

Wisconsin Dells - Jellystone Resort (Yogi Bear Campground)

They have campsites, as well as rustic and deluxe cabins. They also rent Yurts.

It's so fun for the kids. There are a lot of things to do at the resort, (boating, hayrides, crafts and movies at the main lodge, etc.), and a lot of things to do around the Dells.

Fort Wilderness.

All these people on a Disney-themed message board and no one besides me mentioned Fort Wilderness? :lmao:

We go on one camping trip/year so we are not big into camping but we camp at various state parks around Minnesota. If you REALLY want to camp, like canoe in, no electricity, big bugs camping, the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota are a must. If you like some conveniences like running water, showers and bathrooms with flush toilets, I would suggest the state park camping across what ever path you take but maybe make your way toward the Black Hills and spend a few days there at the end of the trip.

If you pick a route, then people in those states can tell you the best places along that route.

I beat you to it! We brought our pop-up there a zillion times when I was a kid! I love it but haven't camped there for probably 20 years.
