My girls are 14 and 11, every Christmas I get them a few board games. We like the classics like Clue, Kismet, monopoly, yahtzee etc. Any super fun games you can recommend? Its hard to tell anything about a game by looking at the box, and some seem a little childish for preteen/teens.

Competitive Games

Carcassonne – THE classic tile laying game. Players build up cities and surrounding lands and score points by placing meeples (little wooden people) on the tiles. Plays to 5, but with the Inns and Cathedrals or Traders and Builder expansions can play to 6. Seen at B&N.

Ticket to Ride – One of the most popular game and it deserves to be. You build groups of cards in order to put down trains to connect cities that you have route cards for. Earn points for routes finished and trains built. The company that makes this, Days of Wonder, makes very beautiful game. Plays to 5.

Clubs – an abstract card game that is a great and simple introduction to my favorite card game type; climbing/shedding games. Plays up to six. I’ve seen this at Target and B&N

For Sale – Pretty simple but strategic card game where kids catch on quicker than the adults. Use money to buy properties; anything from a box and a dog house all the way to castles, skyscrapers, and even a space station then turn around and sell them. Plays to 3-6.

No Thanks! – simple abstract card game where you either take cards or say “No Thanks” and pay a chip. If you run out of chips you have to take the cards. Cards are points and chips subtract points. Plays to 5.

Zooloretto (or Coloretto) – Build up your zoo with animals of each kind in each section. Don’t get too many kinds or you’ll run out of room. Get points for completed sections (or near complete) and lose points for animals not placed. Coloretto is an abstract card game with roughly the same mechanics (and a little cheaper). There is also Aquaretto which is pretty much the same thing with a marine park. Plays to 5. I’ve seen Zooloretto at Target and B&N.

King of Tokyo – Yahtzee meets Godzilla/King Kong sized monsters. Should you try to score points or claw your way to Tokyo and stay there as long as you can. Plays to 6.

Love Letter – Simple game with only about 15 cards that is surprisingly fun and strategic. Are you the right suitor for the princess? Plays to 4.

Takenoko – A new panda has been gifted to the zoo. Take actions to move the farmer so he can grow bamboo, move the Panda to eat the bamboo, play a tile to build the zoo, or take cards that help you score points by eating the right type of bamboo, growing the right type of bamboo, or building up the zoo in the right way. The pastel colors are girl friendly, but the game is fun for all. Plays to 4.

Rise of Augustus – Bingo meets the Romans. Try to help Caesar by drawing tokens and placing troops. When you fill in a card, yell “Ave Caesar” instead of “Bingo”.

A la carte – Prepare dishes in little pans with shakers full of spices and your own little stove. Looks like a toy, but is actually a fun game. Plays up to 4 (or 5 with the Dessert expansion)

Qwirkle – Fun domino like abstract game where you try to match up patterns and colors (or make sure they are all different colors). Also Qwirkle Cubes is a fun dice version. Qwirkle is at Target.

Dancing Eggs – Fun, crazy dexterity game where you have to hold rubber eggs between your knees, in your elbow, under your chin, under your arm and sometimes run around the table.

Crokinole – Dexterity game and a little costly compared to most, but can be hung on the wall and provides great fun. Costs can range from $100 on up (to $400 for a custom heirloom quality board)

10 Days in... - There are many versions of this game; Afrika, Europe, Asia, America, the Americas. Like Racko, but with maps instead of numbers and a few different things in each version. Somewhat educational Plays up to 4.

Fauna – The only other educational game on the list, but this also has a lot of strategy. Should you place markers where you think a particular animal is found in the world, or how much an animal ways or how long it is, or tail length. Guess wrong and you lose your marker, but guess right (or adjacent to it) and you get lots of points. Plays to 6 and there is a Jr version that plays to 4. Was recently on clearance at B&N. I don’t think so any more.

Monza – A kids game that parents can enjoy. It’s like Formula One meets Candyland. Roll the dice and see how far you can go matching the dice to the track. Plays up to 6

Snow Tails – Fun dog racing game where you have to play cards to balance out your sled and brake for upcoming curves. Plays to 5.

Hey, That's My Fish! – Move your penguins to eat the most fish, but don’t get stranded. Plays to 4.

Can't Stop – Long time classic game of press your luck. – plays to 4.

Mondo – Build up a world of animals by all working against each other simultaneously with a time limit. Frantic and fun.

Frank's Zoo – Another climbing/shedding game, but this time with animals. More complicated than the illustrations would lead you to believe. Plays up to 7.

Piece o' Cake – Someone cuts the cake then everyone else gets to pick pieces first. Plays up to 5

Co-operative Games (you all play together to beat the game)

Forbidden Island – My number one suggestion. You all work together openly so little ones can get help from others. You are stranded on an island that is sinking. You have to find and retrieve four artifacts and get all the players off of the island before it sinks. Plays to 4, but we’ve played it with 6 (but it’s a little more challenging). At $15 it is comparatively inexpensive for what you get. This is at Barnes and Noble (B&N)

Forbidden Desert – The follow up to Forbidden Island is a little bit more challenging , but just as fun. You’ve made it off of the island, but now you crashed in the desert and the desert storm is picking. You have to find four parts to an ancient flying machine and fly off before you are buried. Officially plays up to 5, but you might be able to stretch this to six (might need a paper clip to keep track of water for one of the players or the storm). Also at B&N.

Hanabi – Card game that one the Spiel des Jahres this year. Put on the most wonderful fireworks display. Players hold their cards backwards and have to determine which cards to play where by getting clues from other players.

Flash Point: Fire Rescue – You and your team of fire fighters have to help save a family and put out a fire. I’ve seen it at B&N

HTH. Friend prepped for me a few years ago. I've yet to get them all.

How do you pronounce that?

I only ask because I've seen that as a variation of the spelling of a fairly common name in India. It has made for some interesting water cooler conversation, including conversations with someone with that particular name about how it poorly translates to English.

Dixit
Apples to Apples

Exactly the same two I was going to post! I'm taking a second look at your pic, just to make sure you're not my sister, lol.

@bcla, in our family we pronounce it "that weird French game." ;)

Dh and I love cooperative games! I'm not very competitive, so it's more fun to me when we team up to be the board together.

My current favorite is Albion's Legacy. it's a bit complicated, but very fun!

Love Carcassone and Ticket to Ride

He got me a beautiful game for Christmas last year -- Tokaido -- it's pretty neat. Not as much re-play-ability as some others, but it's fun to share and easy to pick up. It kind of has an underlying theme that the journey is more important than the destination, which I really like.

More traditionally, we also have Catchphrase, which is a lot of fun, and with that game, the more the merrier!

https://boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgame can be a great place to learn about new games and see reviews -- the link above is a list of games in order of ranking by users, and they often have nice descriptions of the game mechanics to help you decide.

Rummikub (pronounced "Rummy Cube"). Math/pattern strategies, lots of fun.
Farkle- Similar to Yahtzee but totally different!

We play some oldies but goodies quite a bit at our house.
Parcheesi
Life
Rack-o
Uno (and some of its versions)

With company we play
Apples to Apples
Cranium
Scattegories
Cards Against Humanity (adults only though!)

This year we are getting
Qwirkle
Exploding Kittens
Monopoly (I have no idea how we don't already have a copy of this game!)

My boys are the same ages- we love playing apples to apples, uno, life, battleship (only 2 players :( ) clue and monopoly.

Younger DS and dh love playing rush hour -more of single player puzzle game.

For thanksgiving fun this year-I'm going to buy game of things. I heard an ad on the radio-sounded fun. :)

ODD is 14, her and DH love playing Catan.

Our youngest is only 7 so we're a little limited, but we love apples to apples (we also have a picture version), cranium and cranium jr, and taboo. Those pretty much all require at least 4 players.

Ticket to Ride original plus expansions. The expansions add different levels of depth and additional rules to the game which makes it very interesting. You can also download the app and play via tablets.
Pandemic - it's a co-op game
Power Grid
Carcassone
Five Tribes
Dominion

I have many other games but the strategy is more challenging. The ones I listed are good starter strategy games and they are fun.

Go to the boardgamegeek website for more suggestions.

We also love ticket to ride and lots of other mentioned, but here are some I haven't seen. We are board game junkies even my 5 yr old will play the more difficult games he is just mine or dh's partner. We have this great store by us that let's you play any game before you buy it and you can actually go in whenever you want and check out the games and play. It is great so we know if we like it before we spend a lot of money.

Machi koro
Escape from Atlantis
Risk
Hotel tycoon

Our kids have always loved Scattegories. I can usually get through about 3 sets before my brain implodes. We also like Apples to Apples.
