I'm sitting here watching the news, listening for the second day of stories about how managers in four Massachusetts Wendy's were duped into strip searching employees by a prank called. Appearantly, a guy called up pretending to be a cop, said that an employee was thought to be stealing from customers, and asked the manager to strip search the employee. The caller described the employee who was accused of stealing, and gave the managers instructions on how to conduct the strip search. What a horrible experience for the people who were strip searched!

I can't believe that four managers fell for that, and actually conducted strip searches on their employees. If I got a call like that, I would not have done it. I would have told him to come to the store to take care of it himself so I could see the badge and all that (of course, the guy wouldn't have come because it was a hoax). I would also call the police department in my city to verify that it was in fact true. It's crazy!

Isnt that just the most insane thing? How could they have actually gone along with it? Wouldnt you have gotten the police down there or a lawyer or something? Yikes!

I would have done the same thing as you would have. I can't believe they didn't call the police to verify the information! I especially can't believe they went ahead with the searches. It just sounds so strange.

This hit the news here in the Boston area on Wednesday night, so it's very new.

One of the employees was a 16 year old girl, another an 18 year old girl. Probably too young and scared to know to refuse it.

Another of the employees was a man in his early twenties who was strip searched by a female manager. They said he didn't speak English very well, and was afraid.

How stupid do you have to be, as a manager, to go along with this??

I wonder how old the employees were...those places usually have mostly teens working there. This might be a good time to discuss legal rights with your teenagers.

Ah...thank you.

For heaven's sake! I wouldn't have allowed a strip search. I would have made them arrest me. I can't believe the employee submitted.

a male manager her in rapid City, SD he was manager of Hardees and he did what the phone call said. he was charged with Rape and kid napping when to trial. and during the trial, other resturants in SD, where getting the same calls, but he was the only one that did it. he was found not guilty.

here is the story follow the link.http://www.rapidcityjournal.com/articles/2004/02/13/news/local/top/news01.txt

And there I was, watching the news, and seeing MY LOCAL WENDY'S!!!! :scared1:

The one young male employee is a recent immigrant, who is still learning English, and was so afraid of losing his job he submitted. There is a growing Brazilian population in this town, and many other countries from South America as well. One of the reasons that the caller gave for the searches was that these employees were stealing money and things from the store. He wanted to prove he had not stolen anything.

How incrediably sad for all involved.

I hope they catch & punish these "callers".

This just shows how trusting people can be of a stranger when he says he's the police and gives a good description of the employee he wants you to search.

I feel for the employees and the managers too. I know it's easy to say what idiots or dummies they were for doing this and how you wouldn't have, but we're talking about scared, young and foreign people here.

Even the managers might be pretty young too. I have no clue of their ages yet but they could be young. We all know how young a manager can be at a fast food place! It's pretty common.

IMHO, I'm not going to judge the employees or even the managers until I know all the facts.
