OK, so we had an ADR at 5:50, and got to the 50's Prime Time Cafe about 10 minutes early. They told us that the wait may be up to 30 minutes, so we went to get comfy in the "living room." DH bellied up to the bar, and waited to be waited on for 10 minutes (the guy next to him had waited longer). He would have waited longer, but after about 10 minutes they called our name. Oh well, at least we didn't have a bar tab.
We were seated and our waiter, Uncle Dale, came over. This was our first meal at the 50's PTC, and I've heard/read that your server can make or break your meal, and Uncle Dale definitely made it! He was great. More on that later. First the food.
As we were on
DDP, Uncle Dale explained the menu for us as follows (very quickly, so listen up): We get a drink, and entree and a dessert. For our drink, we could have any of the specialty drinks (which included the floats and the milkshakes), but no refills. We could also have any of the specialty drinks for our dessert. I'm pretty much a water with lemon girl for a drink (unless I'm having a little vino), so I asked if I could have a root beer float to go at the end of my meal to take with us. Absolutely!
DH decided on a hot dog, Aurora on nuggets, both with fries. They didn't want the soup or the salad, so Uncle Dale said he didn't care who ate it, so did the adults want it? Absolutely! He suggested the orange vinagerette, and it was very good, I would highly recommend it if you like a slightly sweet vinagerette.
From reading the boards, I had my heart set on the pot roast. The people at the next table suggested the pork tenderloin, and DH decided that sounded good. We also ordered some onion rings for the table to start (although Aurora only eats the breading off the onion and calls it a day). The horseradish sauce that it came with was yummy!
OK dinner arrives, and now a quick word about pictures. I had fully intended to take pictures of the food, as viewing the "food porn" was one of my favorite activities when I was planning this trip. However, what I was discovering was that when I would get my food (e.g., the Casey's hot dog, my pot roast) I'm so darn hungry that I've eaten half or all of my portion before I remember I wanted to take pictures. That being the case, I gave up that plan. I'll just have to be very descriptive!
My pot roast was delicious! The meat was very tender but not greasy, and the mashed potatos were very tasty. I could have used some more veggies, but at least I had had the salad. The portion size over all was much larger than I had anticipated by looking at the pictures on the boards. But, I still ate it all!
DH really enjoyed his pork tenderloin. He also is a big fan of Vanilla Coke, so that is what he ordered, and was very pleased to find out that it wasn't just a vanilla Coke out a can, but Coke with vanilla syrup mixed in.
For dessert, DH decided he wanted to get a vanilla malted to go, so I told him I would split an apple cobbler, with ice cream, with him. A quick note about cobbler at WDW, and this pretty much applies to both times we had it. I always think of cobbler as being fruit with a soft, not overly sweet crust on top. Both cobblers we had were more of a crisp: fruit with a very sweet, crunchy crust. It was good, but I probably wouldn't get it again.
OK, Uncle Dale. I had not told the kids about the antics of the servers at 50's PTC, but they got into the spirit right away. When Aurora asked him repeatedly whether there was chocolate ice cream, even though he had answered repeatedly in the affirmative, he finally told her reallllllllly slow (well, this doesn't read so funny, but it was really funny when it happened). When DS kept tapping his silverware on the table, Uncle Dale made him give the knife and fork to him. When the woman at the next table was taking a long time in the bathroom, and Uncle Dale wanted to get their order, he finally said, "Guess she's making room for dinner." Noogies were freely given as we left. He was great.
And, as we walked over to Fantasmic, sipping on our root beer float and vanilla malted (which were huge) we decided that 50's Prime Time Cafe was OK by us.
More tomorrow: The Princess Breakfast at Akershus. Would Mulan be there? Would we like the breakfast potatoes? Would there be bagels for the smoked salmon? You'll have to wait to find out.
