You might want to avoid Krispy Kreme

The Krispy Kreme nearest to me is open drive thru only. I despise drive thru and tonight's experience just reaffirms my dislike of drive thrus.

We ordered 3 dozen. 2 dozen strawberry iced with sprinkles for Valentines day at my wife's school and a dozen for the 4 of us to enjoy tonight.

When we got home this is what we found:

A box containing six doughnuts, that at one point appears to have contained 11. The box we were served had been eaten from by the employees.

I am not sure what to do. I know I will charge back the purchase with my credit card company, I have filled out the complaint form on the main Krispy Kreme site, and plan to contact the county health department, not sure if they will care but maybe the location will get a visit and training.

It looks like they picked up the wrong box to give to you. This was probably the community box.

Donut chains aren't popular around here. Most people got to local donut shops run by Asian immigrants. People expect donut shops to offer sausage rolls and the chains don't offer them. They also offer fun donuts decorated like pandas, rainbows, etc. Krispy Kreme tastes gross unless they're hot and fresh.

Honestly - I've gone to them recently because they have one free glazed for anyone showing a proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Very few seem to hit them up on it. Otherwise, I don't see their product as a good value. They're really small compared to what I can find elsewhere, and they individually cost more.

Not sure what's a sausage roll would be. Around California, it's been an inordinate number of Cambodian immigrant families, although also a lot of Chinese-American operators too. Some are just donut shops with diner-style coffee, but I've seen a few larger ones that have grills with breakfast and burgers. A few might even have Chinese-American food. Those probably make more than just donuts. It can feel like a time warp with 40+ year old letter boards, like these:

Both of the Dunkin’ Donuts where we live have been closing down in afternoons for the rest of the evening due to no help. And the quality of help they do have has gone downhill - half the time, orders are wrong. I’d be irritated but I don’t think I’d get the health dept involved. These establishments are already regularly inspected (locally and federally, unannounced) and I’m sure the health dept has better things to do with their time since I don’t think this is really a health issue. Sorry you got a crap deal. 🍩

Dunkin Donuts took a big hit here at the same time at Krispy Kreme. We have 3 Dunkin Donuts left here. But they are building one just over a mile from my house, so soon it will be 4. Winchells was the historic big doughnut chain here, and they went away before the Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts. Winchells is still around, but not here. THAT was the doughnut shop the cops hung out at.

As far as donuts go, we avoid chains like the plague and get donuts from a locally owned original donut shop that is cash only.
Now you mention is, it sure does seem that mom and pop doughnut shops and bakeries are more likely to be cash only. I was in one just before the pandemic started and a customer remarked to the owner he could sell more doughnuts if he took plastic. Owner replied that he was already selling every doughnut he had the capacity to bake, so why bother with taking plastic?

Having worked the complaint line for several US chains, I can tell you they will not accept the donuts back. They have no idea what you could have done to them. Also, with covid rules, restaurants are being hyper vigilant…at least the good ones are.

Your complaint will go nowhere with the health department. You have no proof that employees ate out of that box. More than likely they’ll take your complaint, file it away, and maybe investigate if they get 10 similar complaints.

If you’re looking for a refund, it is better to go down in person to talk to an actual person (but the manager may not be there). Everywhere is overworked, understaffed, and dealing with abuse on a daily basis (not saying that’s your plan). They don’t have time to answer phones. That’s what 1-800 numbers are for.

Whatever you do, I hope you keep a calm head and remain respectful.

The 3 or 4 Krispy Kremes in my extended area opened with great fanfare, were crowded for a while, then all of them closed within a few years. I suppose repeat business was minimal after a few instances of grease “poisoning.”

I gave up on drive thrus well before covid. Too many incorrect orders, either missing item(s) or wrong one received. Besides, it was often quicker to park and go inside.

No great secret why those too lazy to get out of their cars choose the crappiest food.

As for OP’s situation, I’d be upset but would just not patronize that establishment again. Not worth the effort to try to fix things.

I would think the box would have felt off-balance/the weight not distributed evenly? Tipping over? Seems odd - I can see an employee sneaking one out - but half the box. Not questioning you....just a thought.

I thought I was going to read the you guys ate them before you got home :)

We don't use the drive-thru anywhere often if at all.....the few times we have, always something wrong.

I remember once at did curbside at McDonald's and got a large fry in my order. When the runner brought the bag to the car I checked the bag and the large fry box had maybe 10 fries in it. I told the employee and she apologized and went and got me a new one.

The poster who pointed out that they will not take back the returned donuts is correct. That is a health code violation I think. They can and should refund your money if you plan to SHOW them the box but you should also plan to dispose of it yourself after.

Krispy Kreme employees have easy access to more donuts than they could ever want. They didn’t need to eat the ones from your box. There’s a different explanation. Perhaps they put in the wrong ones, took them out and missed replacing them.

When using a drive through you always have to check the order. We have been shorted items many times. I always do a quick check before leaving. Learned that lesson after picking up dinner, driving home and dd's entire order was missed. Had to go back. Now I always check.

I'm sure they will replace the doughnuts for you.

Yikes!

If I had to guess, I would almost think they just gave you the wrong box. I would definitely let them know, I am sure they would fix this issue.

You ordered 3 dozen and ended up with 6 donuts and did not notice before driving away? Always! Check fast food orders before leaving the drive thru.

6 in one box; the other two boxes with a dozen each were apparently fine.

That's what I'm thinking too. I really don't think the employees ate half your donuts and tried to slip a fast one and just give you the remaining thinking you wouldn't notice - I imagine it was just an error and someone picked up the wrong box and put it in your stack. I definitely wouldn't boycott Krispy Kreme over it.

They usually have several boxes of glazed doughnuts already packaged and ready to go. Of course, some people need fewer than a full dozen-- some order a single glazed doughnut or a few glazed mixed in a variety box. It is their normal practice to have one box of glazed near the window that they pull from to fill those smaller orders. Someone just grabbed the wrong box when they were filling the bag for OP's order.

We are from Winston-Salem, NC where Krispy Kreme originated. The employees get free unlimited doughnuts while working so there is truly no way they would steal out of a dozen that was for a customer. Check out their website, it says free doughnuts as a perk of employment like 5 times just on this one page. WORK FOR KRISPY KREME! Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, they are definitely eating the hot fresh ones (which is really the only way they are good) not the ones that have been sitting around in a box.
