Thank you for saying it, as sometimes reading certain threads I really feel like a horrible, negative person. If this lasts as long as some seem to think it will, there will be very little money around period. Of course a few industries may not be heavily impacted, but stores have closed that are NEVER going to reopen because there is not going to be enough money for people to go out and spend in the near future except for the bare necessities.

Once we are allowed out of our houses, many peoples' first idea is not going to be going to buy a new outfit, getting a manicure or eating out. They are going to worry about being evicted, making car payments, etc.

Yes I just sat through a webinar of the proposed provisions of this bill. Basically it would allow employers with less than 500 people to pay 10 days of sick leave or 50 days (10 weeks) of FMLA leave to those who meet the qualifications (fairly narrow) in exchange for a dollar for dollar credit on their Form 941 (employment tax return). So instead of paying tax, they pay their people.

My original comment still stands. If the government thinks it is bad enough to warrant three checks into the fall, we are all in for a world of HUGE hurt. I know they are still working out details. It is still a drop in the bucket if people have no income for several months and have bills like mortgages, cars, food, utilities. Granted better than nothing, but even this money is going to eventually have to come from somewhere.

Yeah. People are so unprepared for how bad this is going to get. Theres a reason the government was downplaying all of this at the start. They knew things were about to crash hard. These checks are just more evidence of it.

All I've heard about is easier access to loans. That's not exactly a savior as that just increases overhead.

I have not heard a definite number. We will not qualify under any of the numbers I've been hearing.

If I got $1000, I might consider it a wash on the $1000 credit that I will never see from an airline that will likely fold.
If that didn’t happen, I would get 20 $50 bills and distribute them to folks that I know that have impacted me with great service (waitresses, barbers, anyone I can think of..)

60% unemployment?.?.? I want to say that’s absurd, but if that comes true I will take the $1000 and order emergency food supply from Legacy food storage and immediately go to my lake place on Lake Superior. Grow a beard and live out my days “Grizzly Adams” style.

60% unemployment is practically impossible. They many people out of work would lead to literal anarchy or martial law. The country as we know it would break down or turn into a military state before we could get to 60.

The $1,000 suggested payment was tied to a $65k cap - the $2,000 ( and up) payment was associated with a $90K cap

My DS and DIL are expecting their first child and DIL is a dental assistant. Her dentist is closing his practice beginning tomorrow for an undetermined time. DH and I will put ours aside for them if we get the money.

Let’s be honest though, how much does that really aim to save? I mean their just aren’t that many millionaires comparatively when looking at the population as a whole.

Another question...why would it cost so much to give everyone $1000? You file taxes, your refund (or handout as the case may be) gets directly deposited into your account. They have this info, they could just deposit money directly into your account (and, they know the # of dependents if that’s relevant to the package they pass). And, for those without a bank account and aren’t participating directly in a normal fashion (like the homeless) we might be better spending the money on food / medicine / shelter with local authorities that can help them the best. Just a thought.

I read an article on this and it's not clear to me if this is "free and clear" or part of a tax rebate. If I remember correctly, under G W Bush, everybody got a check for like $750? Maybe? But then it came out of our income tax? I think?

Would my 20 year old college student son get a check? He’s never filed a tax return because he’s never made much but his movie theater closed and he’s out of work now. This would’ve been the first year he filed.

There is no such thing as free money. I suspect you know that. We will pay for it at some point. Either directly or indirectly.
