You might get a thousand dollars stimulus package

Save it.

I work for a hospital so I feel that I’m at higher risk of getting this virus. I would want to put the money away in case I get sick or have to be quarantined. I have PTO, and I think they’d pay us, but who knows. Rather have extra cushion.

I hope I don't get it. Dh is a salaried worker, he is still working so we aren't in need of it.
Let ours go to someone who actually needs it to pay their rent or water bill or buy food for their family, or pay for doctor's visits.

Crazy thing is I read something about it costing more money if they have to figure out who needs the money and it's cheaper to just send the money to everyone. I don't know if it's true or not. People should definitely donate if they don't need the money. We are salaried and working from home so we aren't losing any money. At least as of right now.

I was going to post something very similar.

Send DH's and mine to someone who needs it more than us.

As of now, no one in my company will be out of work, but it's quite possible someone's spouse/partner will be. Perhaps we can help someone locally.

Same here. We don't need it. But we do get it I am going to hold it for when my bartender daughter needs it.

Whatever you do, spend it in the US economy. It's going to need it. Buying Chinese goods or trips to other countries doesn't help. I'd say spend it on local businesses that are going to be brutalized by this deal. They are going to need all the help they can get. There won't be government bailouts for mom and pops diner.

I will spend it to help with the economy. Not sure where.
I’ve heard it mentioned that buying gift cards from some of the hardest hit companies/small businesses would be a good way to (hopefully) ensure those companies can continue to pay their employees. And to take it one step further, those newly-purchased gift cards could then be handed off to people in your community that could put them to good use.

For a more localized and immediate impact, people could send a few bucks to, for example, their hairdresser, a waiter or waitress they might know that is now out of work, retail workers, etc. Sadly, there are too many to list here, but I think people get the idea I’m getting at. Think of someone that is being directly affected by this, especially those that you suspect might not have a nest egg to fall back on.

It should be federally taxable miscellaneous income.

This will generally result in some of the money going back to the federal government from folks who really did not need it.

It should not be business or farm income and therefore there would not be self employment tax. It should not be on a W2 so as to look like tips that would incur uncollected FICA tax.

Those who lost pay due to the coronavirus crisis would see little or no change in their taxes because their income went down due to the loss of pay and only brought back up by the stimulus check. Many others don't make enough income to pay taxes even with the stimulus.

The wealthy will pay tax in their usual higher bracket compared with the low income folks.

Not to be a downer, but I know many people are salaried and are fine because we can work from home and are getting paid. This $1,000 per person is going to be a drop in the bucket if this goes on for weeks on end. Yes, I hope our jobs can continue to support us - but they can't if the entire economy shuts down for too long. If we need to shut everything down for two weeks let's start it...yesterday.

ETA: Right now, we don't need it either and it would probably help someone else more.

Nope. I will give it to someone in need.
Just remember. That's "pay to the order of CW4D."
