I have a strange incident and not sure how to handle it. In the last week I have received 2 emails through Ebay from people that claim that a person I bought from in the past (I cant remember what I bought but whatever it was had to be inexpensive and was a positive experience) scammed them out of $2200. and $1800 and they want this persons contact info and to know if I was scammed too.

If these 2 people have had prior transactions with this seller they would be able to access the contact info themselves.
It was probably a good idea to forward them to ebay the way you did....I would also block their address so that you will not receive any further email from them.

Gosh..the guy in my life is a sweetheart. He does all my packing, all my weighing and tons more of the sweat work I hate. He's downstairs packing right now..I'm upstairs reading this board LOL! He doesn't resemble any of the men in those jokes.
I guess I don't have a very good sense of humor for these types of jokes.
I have to admit..I come to this board for eBay and budget stuff, and stay away from the community board : (

I'm sure some will get a good laugh!

I have a red headed two year old. I should be excused from EVERYTHING!

Now that DID make me laugh!!

I do find all the excuses on eBay interesting. I keep an excuse file with names from people I buy from, and people who buy from me. My favorite is a person I bought from selling my favorite item...Northern Reflection shirts. She was very late sending them, but she explained her mom unexpectedly died. This was last Christmas. I felt bad and even though it took a month to get the items, I understood. Life happens.

This past summer I saw she was selling more shirts. Obviously SHE doesn't keep track of her excuses. I bought and waited and waited and waited. I wrote one last time, saying I was going to be forced to file with Paypal and leave apporpriate feedback. The note came..so sorry..my mom unexpectedly passed away two weeks ago, right after the auction ended. I emailed a copy of her original note, with one word..Again?

I had my items next day express mail..with a small box of candy..no note, but we both knew why LOL! I've bought from her a few times since..my stuff always comes quickly, and we never mention "the incident".

"Again ???" :) That's hysterical !!!!

Hey - let's be fair though.. In this day and age of broken marriages and families, she could have like 9 "stepmothers".... LOL

Could someone explain to me why people put on a reserve price when you can set the minimum bid at whatever you want. Also does anyone know how people get their listings with neat backrounds and font. I know you can pay extra when listing on eBay, but some things I see are not options and wonder if people do it themselves and not have to pay any extra.

Thanks!!

I am listing a bunch of stuff for my BIL. Let me say that again, a bunch! He doesnt' realize how well he has it!. Anyway, that is beside the point. He doesn't quite understand this whole ebay thing, but I had to go with what he wanted for starting prices. In my opinion, if you start something really low, people look at it because of the price. I was looking at Columbia coats today. The column I was scanning was the right side that showed the price. So, I like to start low, knowing that if it is worth something, then it will get bid up. There are a couple of them that he is not willing to take whatever he can get, therefore, we started low, and we put a reserve price on them. They are getting the exposure of a low price item, but we don't HAVE to sell them unless they get where he wants them. I know that there are some people that will not bid on something if it has a reserve price on it.

What's the purpose of 7 day auctions if buyers generally wait until the fourth or fifth day to place bids? I listed 20 items on Sunday morning, one had a bid by Monday, today I had 2 more with bids. The same happened two weeks ago when I listed about 15 items.

You never know when a bid will be placed...they may have just not been on line on the other days. I sold things all week..and I do 10 day auctions. Most of my sales are when they first go up and when they come down..but by that theory, I should be doing the new one day auctions LOL!

I would suggest also, that you not do auctions on Sunday mornings. A lot of people sleep in, or go to church. That means readership will be down when your auctions end..which is when a good portion of mine sell. Some people love to sit and watch the closing aucitons..trying for a good deal...but they have ot be awake to have that happen : )

I usually only bid when they go on and off..therefore I would never see your auctions.

I know what you mean about not being amused by certain types of humor. Most pop culture stuff leaves me cold (I have no idea what people are talking about, as I have very little time to watch television and read non-essential publications). My former SO was wonderful, overall, but had certain idiosyncrasies (don't we all?) that could be humorous when considered individually without reference to the complete person. Out of context, as it were! He would have been amused by Claudia's chuckle!

And thank you so much for all of your information! I'm not quite ready to get that fancy with html yet, but I copied the links to my eBay reference document. Thanks to C.Ann, you and everyone in this thread, I finally listed my first two items to end this Sunday evening. The first one was a bit of a chore, since I didn't know what I was doing or what to expect. The second one would have been easy, except I lost my text twice and it was LOOOONG! Fortunately, I had the basics in Word, so I was able to copy, paste and massage it a bit.

Although I know it isn't popular with people who sell on eBay for a living, I think I'm going to have to use the listing scheduler option for most of my items, at least those with a reasonable starting price. I just don't have time to sit and list everything all at one time to have the auctions end on certain days.

At this point, everything is trial and error. If I ever master the art of listing (and, hopefully, turbolister), I plan to list some handcrafted items made from materials on hand as trial balloons. They are things that I designed and sold in a business I owned a number of years ago and I still own the rights to the designs. If the trial balloons do well, I'll take a leaf out of DMRick's book and register as a sole proprietor and obtain the appropriate documents to do business online.

C.Ann, I don't envy you having to change residences quickly. But I agree with listing lots of similar items if you want to move quantities quickly. Just be sure each lot has compatible shipping requirements! I'm in the process of eliminating an accumulation of too many years of stuff before downsizing in a few years. I don't want to have to do it at the last minute!

Again, thanks to everyone for the motivation and information.

I use a scheduler all the time. I just don't use eBay's. I prefer Vendio's. I can use all the pic's I want, and I love how easy it is to use : )

Everyone just has to do eBay the way it works for them. I list while my printer is going on job's..so most stuff waits til I have a batch. Not all, but most.

Hi, I sold an item and check offed will ship to the USA only. Someone from Tawain purchased my item. I did not realize this till I was looking over a confirmation email from bidpay. What do I do now? I looked at usps.com and to ship to Tawain the cheapest is about $5.00 but it will take 4-6wks. Anyone help is appreciated.
TIA:wave:

Well in just 1 week I'm heading for Disney:D !! And I am currently done ebaying until I get home. I want to thank everyone for all the wonderful advice and help!!! I would of never started ebaying w/o this thread.

My bottom line-- is ebay paid in full for our villa, our airline tickets, and our souvineer money I am taking. (It also paid for 2 dentist visits last week w/ wisdom teeth extractions, DS's school clothes, several meals out, and several utility bills!!!) I've only been doing it since June-- so I think I did pretty good!!

Once I get home-- I'm going to jump right back in. DH and I are thinking of returning next November and trying to do it all on ebay money--- so now I have a distinct goal. I want to stay at the AKL savannah view and visit Discovery Cove-- so we'll see if I can pull it off.

Thanks Again for all the help and wisdom!!!

Kilee, can I ask what sorts of things you put on eBay and how often? I have been doing the eBay thing since June of 98 but not a lot at one time and not to the extent I want to do it to help w/ the next trip. Thanks!

If you have decided that you do want to ship to Tawain, then get all the prices it will cost to ship there....from airmail parcel post to the global priority rates....and send an email with the costs and time frames and then let your buyer choose how he/she would like it sent. I believe you will have to fill out a customs form as well, but you PO will give you the correct info. Here is an toll free number you can call so you will have the correct shipping/packaging info...1-800-275-8777....
Don't worry about the time frame, I am sure your buyer is aware that the shipping will take a bit of time....he/she would know that your are in the USA from your auction page.

Samandmom, I just went through this also. I put usa bidders only on all of my auctions. I'm fairly new at selling and only feel comfortable selling to the US right now. Anyway, someone from Mexico won. After getting suggestions from this board and also contacting ebay-live help- I was told that since it was in my terms of service for usa bidders only, I didn't have to sell to this buyer. I emailed him a very polite note explaining that I only sell to usa only and that it is in my listing. He immediately wrote back stating that he has a usa shipping address. So it worked out fine for me. But if you still want to sell it to this buyer, you can increase your shipping amount. If I were you, I would get all the info. from usps. with all the delivery times and amounts and email the person with that info. I also think that there are diff. forms you need to fill out at the post office. Although I don't know what they are, there are tons of sellers here that do sell to out of the usa and I'm sure they will post. Also, if you do decide not to sell to him/her, he can still give you a negative. Ebay told me that if you get a neg. because of this, they will definately remove it because your terms of service says USA bidders only. I know this didn't help you much, but I'm sure you'll get your answer soon.

Thank you DMRick. Actually, my auctions were posted just before noon EST as we were going to be out for the day. I've learned enough here not to start too early so as not to exclude the west coast ebayers the opportunity to bid.

Do most of you use TurboLister? Is it faster than just doing it online with ebay? Or do you use even something else? I am always trying to save myself some time!!!!

The convenient thing about turbolister is that you can get all the setup done for your listings AT ANY TIME. Then when the time comes that you want to actually list them, all the work is done. So, what I usually do is work a little every night or so after the kids are asleep getting things ready on Turbolister. Then when Sunday night comes around I am all ready!! I don't have to sit at the computer for hours listing stuff when I would rather be doing something with the kids. It takes only a couple minutes to upload everything. I do try to stagger my listings a little, so people could bid on more than one if they want. When you upload from Turbolister all your auctions will end at the same time (unless you pay extra for the timed ending to auctions). So I upload a little at a time (usually different items - like one men's clothes listing, one kids clothes listing, one knick knack, etc.) staggering about 5 minutes between.

Maggie

I think Turbolister is just so much easier. Even if you are going to only list one item. I have dial-up, and I have to wait for everything to load. Not with Turbolister. Plus, I work in the evenings. I will get it all ready during the day, and then DH lists them for me. He just has to click a couple buttons. Before I had it, it wasn't something I really cared to get. I didn't think it would be much help to me because I'm not a big time seller. I was wrong. It doesn't take much to download it. I'd say give it a try. It's faster, and it is easier.
