Last June, when I first sold children's clothing, my boys clothes did better than my girls clothes. I think it depends on the brand names. I've only got boys clothes up now, with lots of girls name brands to list - I'll keep you posted! :D

I have a question...I had an item sell and it was received partially broken. The buyer did insure the item. I explained to the buyer about going to the post office and filling out the form. They weren't happy about having to do this, but did. Today I get an e-mail stating the post office would not complete the form because the Postmaster wasn't there to verify that it was broken. This person stated they have never had to do this before and they would not take off of work to go get it done again. They went on to say they are very disappointed in the quality of the item (I've sold many of the same item and not one complaint) and it's now become a problem to even get it corrected.
The bottom line is, she wants a refund. She said for me to get back to her by 9/15 and let her know. She will send the item back to me, but it's not going to do me any good, it's broken.
What should I do??

Sorry so long, but I've never had this type of situation happen before.

Thanks!!!!

Here is a link from usps site....hopefully this will be helpful for you http://www.usps.com/cpim/ftp/pubs/pub122/welcome.htm
It does mention on the site though that your buyer must show the item to her post office to show the damage....if the buyer refuses to do that I don't think you will be able to file a claim to get a refund. I think you should give your local post office a call as well. Perhaps then email your buyer and tell them the procedure that they need to follow in order for you to be able to file the claim.
I am sorry that I can't offer more advice on this....I have never had to deal with a damage claim.

If I am shipping books and cassette tapes all in the same box, can I ship it media mail?

From the USPS site:

Media Mail™ contents are limited to materials such as books, sound recordings, recorded video tapes, printed music, and recorded computer-readable media (such as CDs, DVDs, and diskettes). Media Mail can not contain advertising except for incidental announcements of books. The maximum weight for Media Mail is 70 lbs. Media Mail is generally less expensive than Parcel Post®.

There are presorted rates available for bulk quantities of Media Mail (minimum quantity is 300 pieces).
A barcode discount is available for Media Mail.
Rates are based on weight and size.
=========================================
I sometimes put up items of varying media, such as a Winnie the Pooh book, tape and DVD, and send them all in one box media mail.

I need some advise on two different things. It's been a weird day.

1) I sold an item tonight and as usual, before I invoiced the buyer I plugged his zip code in at USPS site and it came up "USPS could not locate zip code." I checked and rechecked with still the same answer with the same zip that was sent to me by ebay. Then, I tried to email the buyer and his email came back saying the email address is no good. So, I went on and sent the invoice through ebay and I haven't gotten anything saying that there was a problem with ebay sending it. I don't know if he got it or not. This buyer has lots of good feedback....recent feedback too. What would you do?

2) The other weird thing happened when I was wearing my buyers hat. I purchased some CHINA DISHES from a girl a couple weeks ago. I paid my PayPal immediately after the auction and paid $7 for shipping and handling. Well, I thought it was taking rather long for the dishes to arrive, but I didn't think too much of it. I've been busy, etc. The dishes arrived today. She had sent them media mail and it cost her $1.43. She sent them in a used cell phone box wrapped in copy/printer paper. The outside of the box had every inch covered in packing tape...thick. When I finally got it open I found the dishes wrapped in bubble wrap, a good thing, and also totally covered in packing tape at least an inch thick. I had to get a knife and cut it open. I didn't think you were supposed to ship china dishes media mail and I don't really appreciate that she gouged me over $5 on the shipping. I've never left a neg or even a neutral but I'm tempted to do so. I don't want any money back, it's just $5 bucks and I figure if she'd do that, she needs it worse than me. It's just the principle. And, this girl has gotten really good feedback with fast shipping stated in almost all of them. Why would she do that with my item. Did the auction not bring what she hopped for, so she thought she'd make up the difference on shipping? What would you do?

Thanks for listening. I'd appreciate any advise you care to offer.

jennymouse, I can't help with #1 -- sorry. But as to question #2 -- I'd definitely email the seller and let her know how I felt. (Sounds like she used up $5 worth of packing tape. ) I think she should refund you a few bucks.

I would wait...there really isn't anything else you can do.

If you don't hear from the person within 3 days, send a reminder through Ebay, if you still don't hear from them within 7 days, start the NPB and then if after another 10 days you don't hear from them file for your Final Value Fee and either 1) do a second chance offer, if available or 2) relist.

Thanks claudia! The buyer did take the whole box with item and shipping material to the post office and they told her since the Postmaster wan't there and couldn't verify the damage, she would have to come back. Now she won't go back.

If I refund her the money, I will be out the money and will have a broken item. Is there anything that I can do to get something back? Do I refund her the entire amount? When she returns the item, can I then take it to my post office and get the money back with the insurance receipt? Sorry for so many questions, this just bothers me.

Thanks!!!

Too funny! I never imagined I'd be compared to Brad Pitt! Heck, I'm just another card-carrying (at least until the DC ends), mouse-ear-wearing WDW freak who has to find a way to pay for it! But thanks, Maggie, that is really flattering! :teeth:

If anybody's a celebrity, it's C.Ann. I think we ought to write the eBay folks and have them pay her way to go to the next eBay convention in New Orleans in 2004. I bet they'd be interested in the thousands, and even tens of thousands worth of sales that have been generated as a direct result of this thread!
Whaddaya think, C.Ann?

Too bad it's not in Orlando again... I think we'd all go! With some side trips, of course! ;)

Momof2OH, YOU are not responsible for that item once it leaves your hands. She purchased the insurance for her item, and it arrived damaged. The problem now lies with the US Postal Services. As far as I am concerned, you followed through with your part of the transaction, and are now finished with it.

Had she not purchased the insurance, you then might feel obligated to refund her money (minus shipping, of course!)

She needs to do what the post office said in order to recoup her money. You have nothing to do with it anymore, I and would tell her so!

Why purchase the inusrance if you are not going to file a claim with it??

Could someone or everyone send some bidders my way. LOL, I just started selling for a few weeks now and I already got e-bay fever. Last week was great for me, seems I'm making up for it this week. I got a bunch of acutions listed and only 2 have bids on them. So for those of you who have toooo many bidders I'll take some off your hands.....;)

I know exactly how you feel. My past 2 auctions went really well, but the ones I have going now also only have 2 bids. Hopefully everyone is waiting until the last minute to bid.

I would agree with waughzee on this....if she refuses to follow through to make a claim then it really is not your problem and you should send her an email to the effect of......"you purchased insurance for your package, so now you must be responsible to follow through on that....my hands are tied as there is nothing I can do to help you until you follow the rules of the postal service."
That said....ultimately the decision is up to you as to how to handle it.

Someone asked me to end one of my auctions early using Buy It Now. Since no one was bidding on it I asked her how much she was willing to pay. She came back with a really low offer that I don't want to accept. What do I do now? I don't want to upset her since I'm hoping she'll bid on the auction.

I'm hoping you can help me figure out a category to list one of my items under. I've searched and haven't found anything like it so I'm rather stumped!
It's a souvenir gift set consisting of a letter opener, bottle opener and keychain. It was purchased back in 1980 in Toronto.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!
Vicky

Just write back and nicely explain that you feel the piece is worth much more than that, and you'll not be able to accept that price.

If it doesn't sell, wait a week and relist, or you can offer her a second chance... :)

I think that the few times it has been posted here that people want an auction ended early is because they don't want the bidding to get too high. That is usually what has happened - the item goes for much more than what the bidder was offering to end it early. I don't think that I would end it. If it goes through and no one bids on it, then relist it. If no one still bids on it, then I would email her and take her offer.

Question............

Okay here is a problem that seems odd. Remember my book that I never got after 30+ days? And remember that I put in a buyers complaint at Paypal? Well I still wanted my book soooooooooo I bid on another one(different seller of course) she emailed me and said it had shipped. Well 2 days later I get a book in the mail...no return address and no paypal slip. Here is the question....who sent it? LOL! I mean it was sent media mail so I can hardly believe that media mail would arrive so fast BUT what do I do? I emailed her and asked how she shipped and what it was shipped in and she said "media mail in a large envelope with bubble wrap" but that she had a return addy sticker. Well the book was exactly as decribed EXCEPT no sticker....

Another question I have is, I tried to leave feedback for an auction I won and it says there was no transaction between us so I cannot leave feedback...HUH?
I won,I paid and I have the item......why can't I leave feedback? Any ideas?

Thanks everyone for your replys and help. I did e-mail her, this is what I sent:

I am sorry that you are unhappy with your purchase. I am willing to fix the broken part for you, however I cannot refund your money. Having you send me back the item broken doesn't help w/o you filing the claim at your post office. This is why the items are insured, in case something happens. The receiver has to file the claim for broken or damaged items not the sender. The only way that I can refund the money to you is if you file the claim at your post office and send me back the form and the entire candy jar in the original packaging.
Thank you!

I then get this response from her:

Would you consider refunding part of the money? If I saw this item at a craft sale I might have been willing to pay up to $15.00 for it. Would you consider a refund of $10.00?

I don't know if I will return the candy jar to you at this point because it is becoming more of a hassle than the thing is worth. If I want to send this to you at this point, I will have to take more time off work to go to the Post Office again and I'm not certain I want to waste my time doing this. I've never been dissatisfied with any purchase made through eBay until this one. I do want you to know that I've contacted eBay and asked them if it is possible for them to create a seller's rule that if you are selling homemade items under a trade name that the listing include the fact that this item is homemade. A rule like this would have saved me a great deal of aggrevation.

I am not sure now how to respond. Some of the auctions I put up I had forgotten to list that the item is homemade, but anyone who had questions would e-mail me about them. This woman never e-mailed any questions me at all. In fact this was a second chance offer.
How should I proceed?:( I have never had any other complaints or problems regarding the items I make.
TIA

To me it sounds like this person is just wanting their money back. Why would she be willing to keep a broken candy jar for $15? If it was me, I think I would tell her that she has to get the money back from the post office for breaking the item. This is a hard one. If she was just unhappy with the quality, she should have said so. If you sell a lot of these things, you might not want a negative feedback about it. If you were misleading in your auction, then you might want to refund her. Hope you get this figured out without any negative feedback. It's a difficult situation.
