Yo, I Got Your Chit Chat Right Here

At what age did you get your kids cell phones. I swore my kids would have to wait until they were older but, my DD12 is playing on the volleyball team this year and has lots of away games that there's no way with work schedules and the other kids that we can make it to the games. So i'm thinking I would feel more comfortable if she has a way to contact me if she needs to. So whats your opinions! Should they have them or not?

Our dd's (12 and 14) have each had one for a year now. We have strict rules though....they are only allowed to call US !! We tell them if they want to talk to their friends...they can call them at home. The phones are strictly for situations where they need to get in touch with us while they are at after school activities, softball practices, etc. They also come in handy while camping...the kids can go off on their own and we can still keep in touch if we need to.

Am I the only one who misses the "Chit Chat" thread ?? :confused3

We are camping right now at our membership campground one town over. The girls usually have friends over while we are here since we are pretty close to home. My son (who is 7.5) is always whining "there is nothing to do- no one to play with" despite the fact that we do family things with him all the time. The girls are allowed to go to the pool or rent kayaks/paddleboats on their own. He obviously can't go without us. He doesn't seem to be able to find anything on his own to do. Once in awhile he will go up to the playground or family center...but mostly he hangs out here waiting for the next thing we are going to do with him.

Sometimes, I just want to chill with a book, you know ??

So I thought maybe he is old enough this year to have a friend come hang out for the day. I explained to my DS that they could go to the playground, go for a bike ride, play in the family center, or play with all of the lawn games we have on the field right behind our site. I told him I'd take them to the pool for awhile this afternoon....but the rest of the time they are on their own.

I got some good books from the library and was all set to enjoy my quiet afternoon. :thumbsup2

So his friend gets here about 11:00 and as soon as his mom pulls away he starts bouncing around like he is on some sugar high. He can't seem to be CALM at all. The first thing he wants to do is go fishing....which wasn't something we had even planned on doing. My DH is at work and I am not into fishing. I'm not sending a couple of 7 yr olds out there to fish off the shore on their own !! My 14 yr old DD came to the rescue and offered to take them for awhile after lunch.

They came back after 20 minutes because it was too hard for her to help both boys at the same time and they were getting antsy. So now they want me to take them to the pool, and then they want me to take them to the frog pond, then for ice cream.

This was NOT how this day was supposed to go !! :rolleyes1

Someone in my wifes family gave their 5 yr old a cell phone. I was like "who the heck does he need to call"? Our 6 yr old is never out of our site.... so I don't see me buying him one for a while....

I agree,, why would a 5 year old need a cell phone when he could just jump on your new chat room for free !!:thumbsup2

Hello...anyone home? :confused3 I feel alone here. I've been away for a bit..and just returned this evening. Thought I'd check in to see what's going on, and no one's here?:sad1: Doesn't look as if there's been much posting either. Well, just saying "Hi"...and hoping all you Florida folks have dried out..and wondered if everyone is okay.

I'll tell you, we're swimming here in the Metro Atlanta area.

I have 2-275 gallon tanks that I catch rainwater in for the garden. One's located under a downspout and the other halfway up the hill behind the house. They're both full for the first time in a LONG time.

When we left Ga for Fl, Lake Lanier was it's usual dry self, but since Fay has come through my sister said that it has been a monsoon! The area has had anywhere from 3-10in. or more in 2 days and it has and is raining non-stop! The lake should see a rise of a couple of feet from the watershed and it is SOOOOOO needed! It will take years for a recovery but I don't think it ever will. They release and have released so much water and with the drought it will likely stay 10 feet or more below the old norm from now on.:confused3

Glad you are okay Jen!:thumbsup2 Today's the first day we could really enjoy the beach!:)

How is (I think this is it) Lake Lanier doing?

Lake Lanier is east of us, so it's not my 'normal' lake. According to the lake level website, the rain didn't do a whole lot for the lake.

Normal pool is at 1071 feet and the level on the reading for the 26th showed 1053 feet with no rain. The watershed for Lanier is actually the mountains of northeast Georgia.

Anyway, here's the lake level website. http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ffc/html/rrm.php?date=2008-08-26+13:20:11 It's updated about 9:30 AM every morning.

Lake Allatoona, the lake a few miles from me, showed 2 inches of rain and a level of 4.5 feet below full pool.

Here close to the lake we've received a bit over 6 inches the last two days. Hopefully they recieved as much in the north GA mountains. I'm going to drive over the dam today and take a look! :thumbsup2

I wish we could get some of that rain up here. We are still under a fire ban :headache:

Yeah, it stinks...we haven't been able to have a fire in the firepit outside in over a year! :upsidedow I thought they would lift the ban during the winter, but not in my county, ugh!

Hey, Flame!!! Happy to see you back! We received all total 11.5 inches of rain from Fay. It rained non-stop all week. We have a small lake in our development that has been bone dry since the end of 2006. It's back to being 3/4 full now. YIPPEE! We'll have alligators in our back yard again. I'm just sooooo excited about that!
