I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but I'm just trying to make sense of all this to make sure that this is really what the DH and I want to do...
It has obviously been suggested to look into a re-sale before buying directly from DVC, so my question is this...What is the difference in buying a re-sale rather than new (besides the obvious fact that you will probably get points cheaper)? I know this sounds silly but Disney really adds a lot of magic, and I would want to expect the same thing if buying a re-sale from somewhere else rather than buying from Disney.

Your membership and benefits are the same as a direct from DVD-buyer (Disney Vacation Development, the corporate "selling" arm). Process is different, obviously, but there are no "penalties" associated with not buying from Disney, as there are with some other major TS folks, like Hilton or Marriott.

We bought BWV resale last year at this time. Bought an add-on from DVD in October. Have been treated well through both processes. Never felt like there is an asterisk on our membership.

We also bought re-sale (from our sponsor) and have not seen a difference in the quality of membership. About the only difference I can see may be that you can buy "sold out" resorts (BWV, BCV, VWL) through resale; much harder to buy those through DVC.

Good Luck whatever you choose to do ...

So in essence then, it wouldn't make sense for me to buy in directly through DVC at $101 a point for Saratoga Springs when I could get them from TSS for $80-something a point then?

Exactly.....but if you were in the market for BCV, BWV, or VWL the price at resale verses DVD may be very close after closing cost are added to the resale. The only benefit I see going through Disney is that its pretty quick. No ROFR to go through...your in the system asap. You also get last UY points which in a resale you may not have any previous UY points available.
But if you can get SSR for $80 pt resale.......why not. I think the $101 is correct but there may still be a $8 of per point promo......should net down to $93.

Some of the major differences between buying from Disney and purchasing a resale contract are:

Buying from Disney:
- You become a member within hours of paying your deposit and can begin making reservations
- The price/point you are quoted is the final price (no closing costs)
- You can buy any number of points you want greater than or equal to 150 points
- You receive all current Use Year points with your purchase which will be either 2005 points or 2006 points depending on the Use Year you purchase
- Your first year's dues are pro-rated from the date you pay your deposit
- You can purchase any resort but there may be quite a wait to buy in to some of the smaller resorts

Buying Resale:
- The entire process from sending in your deposit to making it into Disney's system takes about 8 weeks, sometimes longer
- The price/point is less than buying from Disney, unless you are buying BCV in which case it might be higher (because Disney has a long waiting list for BCV points)
- You must pass Disney's ROFR so that limits how good a deal you can afford to negotiate with the seller -- if the deal is too good, Disney will take the contract and you'll have to start over
- Closing costs are usually paid by the buyer and run about $4/point
- Buyers usually end up reimbursing the seller for the current year's dues
- The 150-point minimum does not apply when purchasing a resale contract. You can become a member with as few as 25 points, though these contracts are hard to find and Disney often takes them via ROFR
- Contracts vary from being totally "stripped" of points to being fully "loaded" (all of last year's points banked, all current year points, and all of next Use Year's points available) and everything in between. Carefully review the details to see exactly how many points you will get with your resale contract.
- All resorts are available via resale but you may have to wait a bit to find a contract of the right size, preferred Use Year, enough points currently available to justify the asking price, etc.

I joined by buying a BWV resale through The Timeshare Store. I waited a few weeks for the right contract to come along. The whole process took about 8 weeks. I got a good contract and everything went very smoothly.

Good luck!

Good luck on your decision.

I'm already a DVC member (SSR 300 pts.). If I wanted to purchase an add-on at BCV or BWV through Disney would I have to purchase 150 pts or could I purchase less, say 50 or 75 pts.

Thanks

Owners may purchase as few as 25 points - whether at their original resort or any other resort. If you want financing thru DVC, the minimum would be 50 to qualify. Add-ons will have the same Use Year as your master contract.

Enjoy!

i researched both for months... in the end i decided i wanted 100 pts (i plan to go every other year).

to get 100 pnts I needed to go re-sale... Timeshare Store (TSS) seemed to have the best reputation and low pressure sale (i.e. great source of info).

It took me 5 days to get through ROFR... now I am onto closing.

Good luck.
