Yet Another DDE Question

I'm sure this has probably been answered, but....

We're heading down in July/Aug 2005 and then back again next June 2006. If we order the DDE in the month of June 2005, will it work through June of 2006 or will it expire in May?

Also, do we need to have our annual passes purchased before we order the DDE? We'll probably be ordering them online with our DVC discount and we didn't know whether we needed to order the APs before we ordered the DDE.

We're just planning out what needs to get done when and we were wondering whether we should order it in June or July. Thanks for all your help.

You have to have either your AP number, AP voucher number, or Florida Driver's License number to order the DDE card.

Normally it will be valid until the last day of either the montgh of issue or the month after issue the following year. If you order it on June 1, it will be good until either June 30 or July 31, 2006.

Timing your DDE purchase can be interesting. First of all, you will need at least your AP voucher before you can place your order. Second, the DDE cards can take 8 weeks to arrive, so they will add an additional month or two to your expiration date to compensate. So if you order it in early June the expiration date would be no earlier than June 30, 2006, but more likely would be July 31, 2006. Either way, you would be covered for your second trip.

If you are traveling to WDW within a few weeks of ordering the DDE, they will snail mail you a confirmation letter that you can use in place of the DDE cards in the interim. This letter will have an expiration date that is just 6 weeks or so from your order date, so some people are finding that the letter has expired BEFORE their cards arrive! If it happens that your trip falls in between the expiration date of your letter and the arrival of your cards you can request another letter, but since there will not be time to snail mail it to you, you will have to pick it up at Epcot's Guest Services window. I don't know why they don't put a longer expiration on the letter to prevent this from happening...

Given you are traveling at the end of July you may have just enough time to order your AP, get your voucher and then order the DDE and still get your cards before your trip if you act quickly. You would need to get the AP voucher in time to order the DDE within the first few days of June to be reasonably sure that the DDE cards will arrive in time. However you'll probably be sweating it out that last week before you leave, wondering if the cards are going to make it in time and wondering whether you will have to call the DDE office to request that a last-minute confirmation letter be left for you to pick up at Epcot.

Another option for you, if you don't mind carrying a confirmation letter for your first trip, is to order the DDE three weeks before your trip. Tell them your trip date when you place your order so that they will snail mail you the confirmation letter. (Don't order too close to your departure date because if they don't have at least two weeks, they will not mail the letter and you will have to go to Epcot to pick it up.) With this scenario, you would be ordering the DDE in early July, so your expiration date will be at least July 31, 2006 but more likely August 31, 2006. The downside to this approach is that you have to carry a folded letter rather than a card, but you will receive the letter in the mail rather than having to pick it up at Epcot and you will be guaranteed to have something valid in your hand that can be used as soon as you arrive at WDW -- no need to make a mad dash over to Epcot to pick anything up.

By the way, you are entitled to two DDE cards (one for you, one for your spouse/partner), but they only send one copy of the confirmation letter. Since it is printed on watermarked paper, it's not clear whether a photocopy of the letter would be accepted. So if both you and your spouse/partner each need a copy, I would ask them to send you two copies of the confirmation letter so that you each have one for the trip.

I ordered my DDE card in Jan. for my March trip and did not have to have my AP voucher yet. I did offer to give the woman my AP confirmation number, but she said she didn't need it. I wonder if they can just look it up in the computer. The DDE card usually expires in 13 months, so if you order now it would expire the end of June 2006.

SInce February many things have changed at DDE. They were very lax in January, and started following their own policies early February.

I ordered my DDE cards in early February and did not receive them until the end of April. DDE emailed me a confirmation letter to use that expired the end of March (I called for another one which was also emailed to me) (although I understand that they don't do that now).

My cards are good for 13 months. I needed my AP number or voucher number but could have used my FL driver license number (but then your cards are $75.00)

DDE is only open Mon-Fri from 9-5 so plan appropriately.

Thanks to both of you for your help!
You're welcome. Timing wise, you're in a difficult spot. If you can order the DDE soon, you just might get the cards in time. Then again, they might not, leaving you to call the DDE office back at the last minute to request that they generate a confirmation letter for you to be picked up at Epcot.

The DDE office is aware of the delay problems and the staff there seems to be pretty helpful. If you opt to order the DDE ASAP in hopes of getting the cards before your trip, they wouldn't normally mail you a confirmation letter because the letter is usually only sent to those who are traveling soon and need something to use in place of the actual cards. But if I were you, I would request one anyway just in case the cards don't arrive in time, AND I would ask if they could please choose an expiration date for the letter that is AFTER your trip. That would save you having to do anything at the very last minute if the cards don't arrive in time.

Also, there have been a few changes in the ordering procedure since I ordered my DDE in January (when they didn't ask for your AP number and would email your confirmation or fax it to your resort) so if you decide to wait until early July to order the DDE, keep an eye on the DDE discussions on this board just in case their procedures continue to evolve!

Honestly, I'm not really worried about having two cards (or the cards at all) on this first upcoming trip - the 2006 trip we'll have a huge crowd and we'll probably be splitting up a little more. We're staying at BWVs and Epcot is our favorite park so it won't be a huge deal if we have to go to Guest Relations there.

Guess we'll be ordering those APs right away....

Thanks again.
