i know this is posted every third monday, but searching the threads wasn't getting me anywhere..

so i'll try posting:

first of all i don't understand why cameras can't be charged the way mobile phones are charged...
i have a 3G telephone with a brilliant built-in camera (sony ericson phone with a 3.1 megapixel cybershot camera)....like many phones, i just plug it into a wall socket to charge (using the special cable that came with the phone)...

are there cameras that charge the same way?
or are all of them either with regular batteries (e.g. AA) or with lithiums that have to be charged separately from the camera in a special charging unit?

ok and now for the camera recommendation itself -

this is what i'm looking for:

-- not too expensive (this is for my daughter's trip to japan - yes i know, coals to newcastle, but she has to have it before she leaves on sunday)

-- compact (very thin/flat - as little bulk as possible).

-- it would be good to have a viewfinder as well as a screen but not critical

-- a still camera that also takes video clips (with sound)

i'm sure there's more but that's what i can think of at this moment...

Hi

I just bought a new camera myself,

I got the Fujifilm Finepix F31D it cost around £140 from Jessops.

It has it's own battery in that you charge with a plug that goes in the wall.

The pictures look great and I haven't even looked through the manual or anything yet!

It does video and I used it for a live Heavy Metal gig on Saturday night in a club and was very impressed with the picture and sound quality that I got. So for more scenic/everyday things it should be perfect!

It is very easy to use and I know a lot of people who have this camera, so far I can't complain about it at all!

Hope that helps a bit :thumbsup2

My sons' Kodak V610 cameras plug straight into the wall for charging so perhaps other Kodak cameras will do this. I don't think this camera is available any more.

Snap with your camera phone I have the K800i and it is a smashing little camera to have on you.

I think the only camera company that still puts viewfinders on its cameras is Canon. My own camera is too bulky to recommend to you (S3 IS) but if you have a look on Amazon at the reviews of different cameras you may get some ideas. I usually go for Canon products myself.

yes i think that's the phone i have.....great camera and lots of memory (all the pictures of my black dog on my website were taken with that camera - amazing)
as for Canon - yes they make great cameras - on the JDPowers site, canon is top rated in the premium point and shoot category, the fuji is top rated in the budget point and shoot category, and the casio is top rated in the ultra slim category...
well armed with your recommendations i'm going to see what there is on wednesday when we're at the camera store - i'll look at kodak as well to see about that direct charging....which i think is a great thing....

thanks for your posts!!

Beth,

Another thing to look into is the actual battery life. I know my sons' cameras take lithium batteries and are supposed to only last for 135 shots, whereas mind has 4 AA rechargeables and lasts for 500+ shots. There will be reviews which will indicate the battery life but it will also depend on how snap happy your daughter is.

My son (19) has gone off on his first trip by himself over to Minneapolis which has taken me some time to get used to. He is visiting a couple of America students who he met whilst they stayed at York Uni for a few months. It feels a bit strange thinking of him all the way over there.

What is Toyoko Disneyland like? I am that used to Orlando's one, thinking of a Japanese version seems a bit surreal.

yes, that's a very good point -- i haven't been able to find that information but i'll keep looking...

For how long is he in Minneapolis? Minnesota is actually a pretty place - lots of lakes....(i'm originally from michigan - also a midwestern state)....

The last (and only time) i was in tokyo disneyland was 23 years ago so i don't know how it is now - but at that time it was very interesting. It's very similar to Disneyland (or a cross between disneyland and the magic Kingdom). But everything in japanese. The people are much more reserved than americans, so the atmosphere is a bit different. But all in all it's the same. and the CMs, being japanese are outstanding. Japanese have a very strong culture of service and you see that everywhere (stores, hotels, restaurants, etc.) and so of course you also see it at TDL. but with a disney touch.

Thanks Beth. My son is in Minneapolis for a month. He was very much looking forward to experiencing the real America and seeing what it is like to be an American student. It will be a good experience for him and an excellent opportunity to stay quite cheaply with having his friends to stay with. For us it was a big jump starting from last October when he first went away to University to now taking a long journey by himself, you never stop worrying about them do you? Part and parcel of being a parent.

another vote for fuji finepix F31- I love mine. easy to use and the battery when fully charged lasts for ages and ages, which i think is a real bonus. very good pics in low light as well.

thanks i'm going to look that up now - i'm going out shopping soon to see what's really available...then she'll make the final decision as to what she wants - she doesn't have time to research it herself right now because she's still in university exams (there was a long student strike this year, so the school year ran through the summer until now)...

my daughter went on her first trip by herself last year (to thailand and vietnam)..this year is japan and thailand....she just finished her first year of university (but she's older than your son, because she had to do her compulsory military service first - she's 22).....she actually has some pictures from her trip last year on her website www.myspace.com/chanilerner
thanks for all the info!!
