I will be driving from Northern NJ to Disney on Wednesday 11/2/2011. I can leave any time after 3:30. I will probably prefer not to wait until 6 to leave to drive 95 down so I was wondering how 81 would be at that time of day(3:30). Aside from weather do you think I would hit any problem areas at that time? Thanks for any info you can provide.

Here is my mileage breakdown for each route:
Suggested routes

1. 18 hours 34 mins
I-95 S
1,093 mi
2.

19 hours 46 mins
I-81 S and I-95 S
1,187 mi

I think you will probably be fine on 81 at that time. Last year we hit "rush" hour in Harrisburg...morning one going down and evening one coming back and breezed right through. Both days were Fridays too during the summer vacation time.

I think it would be even an easier drive in November.

Thanks for the response. I guess that is the question I am asking. I know what cities to avoid at what times on 95 but I have no idea about 81. Are there cities to avoid at certain times?

I guess maybe Charlotte would be one to avoid during rush hour. But if you leave at 3, that won't even be an issue.

It really is a beautiful ride. Just keep an eye on the weather though. Wouldn't want to do it in the snow.
