My daughters asked me today how long it will take them to get a yellow belt. I have no idea. They are 6, and go 2 - 3x a week....

I told them I would find out. I'm asking here becasue I know so many of you have children who take TKD.

It doesn't take long to test up to yellow. At our studio usually everyone tests up to yellow at the first available testing after they start.

That's kind of what I figured... It helps keep the kids interested.

About 3 months, but we have a white advanced belt between the 2.
It really depends on the dojang or system. We are Tang soo Do, which is a "'kissing cousin" to TKD. However for the kids we do monthly progress check where they earn either a stripe or a character on their belt. My master Instructor does characters. A friend who recently took over the kids program uses different colored stripes depending on the skill mastered. Once they master all the skills, then they test.

Our testing cycles are every 8 weeks. My daughter just got her yellow a couple of weeks ago.

My son tests every 8 weeks. He's a purle belt right now and I think next is blue. After that they test every 4 months as they work towards black belt. My son started back in January or so and is actually so good his instructor let him double test and he skipped his green belt and went to purple from camo. He had to learn everything for both tests so it was pretty intense but he passed. His instructor told him its very rare for people to be able to skip. Yes, big mommy brag. ;) :lmao:

Are your girls enjoying it?

We belong to American TaeKwonDo Assoc. DS was 4 when he started (called Tiny Tigers) and tested every 4 months. Once becoming a "junior" (not TT), testing was every 2 months. (Junior is aged 7 & up OR decided blue belt...whichever is first. DS maxed out belts to decided blue before age of 7.)

DS tested and earned his first degree blackbelt (at 7.5 years old) in Sept 2006. This Sept. he tested 1/2 way to 2nd degree....(to earn 2nd degree is 8 - midterm tests....1 each quarter...meaning, yes, 2 year program. My son should test and receive his 2nd degree belt at the ripe old age of 9.5  ).

Good luck to your DD's OP! :thumbsup2

They absolutely love it... but say they don't want to be a black belt because " I don't want to break boards with my head". :)

Awww... :goodvibes

DS is a Black Belt and he only needed to break 1 board with his forearm or foot it was his choice..

WOW, he has an easy instructor! Our kids are also black belts in TKD. Their black belt test took 3 hours and included 6 board breaks of different types.

ONE board for a blackblet test?? My daughters was 6 boards, various break, not a head but running and jumping over obstacles and breaking mid air with foot, elbow, back kicks, side kick etc,,,darn test took hours!

My son started Tae Kwon Do at the beginning of summer break (so early June). He got his yellow belt within a month of starting (the first testing after he started) and will be testing for his next belt this Friday, which is yellow with white stripe.

Depends on the school. Ours tests every 4 months. And they can't test for Black belt until they are 11. Really for all they need to know I think that is appropriate. We go to tournaments with some of the younger black belt type schools and the difference is very clear.
Bubba's mom no offense and I watched your tape it was great- but that is not what my kids have to show to earn their black belt. Different requirements.

My son is 13 and is a first degree black belt- tested for black(at 11) then 3 months later got a decided Black then 3 months after that First degree senior. It will take him about a year to get to second degree. (the board breaking gets tough.-) They need to break 4 boards at once- so double up on each side and break with a jump kick- not so easy. To get their black belts they had 8 specific breaks they had to show-The test took 3 hours.

We also belong to ATA and I looked at your video and our tests are much different. It must vary by school owner. Our board breaking is so much more and also the sparring seems to be non contact in your video, we are full contact. Broken noses, fingers etc for the bigger group, the little ones are full contact but nothing broken as far as I know-they also wear face cages now to keep their face safe.....

our school only tests the kids when the individual student is ready.. nobody ever fails a test or pays for a test that the child wasn't ready for. our black belts have a 4 hour test, including several board breaking combinations, 100 push-ups, forms from the white belt and up (so as not to forget the old ones).

we also do full contact sparring, with gear on, even for the higher belts.

my son is a blue belt, took him just over a year, but will probably at least another year or more to get to black belt. we're not rushing it, hoping that martial arts will be a lifelong interest. my daughter took off a few months to work on her grades and is now a green belt. she needs to polish up her forms to move on.

My DS was in a program at the Tae Kwon Do school called "Little Ninjas" for 4-6 year olds. Those kids could actually test 1/2 way to their yellow belt & get a 1/2 yellow & 1/2 white belt....pretty cool!

Knowing there are a ton of different TaeKwonDo schools/curriculums as there are martial arts, you'll get a ton of different answers. Our school has light contact for all ages. Each schools curriculum will vary from others...most definately. I would agree you should ask the instructor. I know of other kids in "karate" and their belt system, sparring and requirements are very different. ATA (American TaeKwonDo Assoc) is headquartered in Little Rock, AK...just being a bigger company than smaller chains or individually owned schools. (Not saying this is better or worse than the other, but they may follow along the same curriculum.)

I have never seen anyone make a kid break a board with their head...and i hope I don't. Papa Deuce....it's great exercise for your girls, great friendships to be made, and great life skills learned..... Even tho all our kids' programs/requirements/curriculums are different, there is nothing bad about having them participate in such an interesting/fullfilling sport....well, except maybe the costs involved :rolleyes1
