Yearly Vet Visits

No, only go to the vet as needed and for vaccinations. The heartworm preventative currently on is an annual vaccination.

Once my puppy is a year old, I want to look into that annual shot. I'm very careful to give M. her heartworm pill on the first of every month, but once a year would be easier.

The pills she takes are expensive, but they are heartworm prevention + flea and tick prevention.

I do and I hate it. It's such an ordeal for them. They're good dogs but 1 is a big baby and while anyone in our house can lay on her, play with her etc., she is scared to death of other ppl touching her. They're also both older and I know the time is coming and I don't want to hear it lol.

Our cats have yearly visits right now, but they're getting older, so we're getting cards in the mail now offering to switch to six-month visits.

They have a monthly "spot" flea/tick/worm preventative that we just put on the back of their necks.

We've been using this method for about three years, and it has been fine for her with no negative side effects. I have her on Simparica for flea medication now, which is working fine for her. She had reactions to the topical Frontline it really seemed to bother her, and to oral Nexgard and Bravecto she didn't keep down anytime it was given to her.

We adopted our dog from a rescue, and was put on medical hold due to heartworm. Apparently the treatment is horrific, and expensive.

Yes my cats go every year and they get their teeth cleaned. Our city has licensing laws and they have to show proof of rabies shot every year so you really have not choice. My cats are strictly indoor so don't get heartworm meds.

Not sure on cats, but at least for dogs, rabies immunizations (after the first one) are good for 3 years. So technically a person could go every 3 years. We also have mobile vaccine clinics for animals where I live so you don't have to see a vet at all if you don't want to. You can get the vaccine cert from the mobile clinic.

Ours uses the 1 year shot. But I will be asking them about it the next time I talk to them.

Twice a year for our seniors. Actually the golden goes a little more frequently so we can stay up to date on her blood work and try to catch anything early. Their health is very important to us, and since they can’t talk, we try to do as best as we can.

One of the most common signs of heart worm disease in cats is sudden death, and I have had several cat patients die of heartworm disease. One study reported 1/3 of cases of heartworms in cats are in cats that are classified as indoor only—people will tend to say their cats are indoor only but on further questioning they say the only go on the deck supervised, on a screen porch, on a leash, etc.

Yes for visits. Also yearly dental cleaning.
No on the added meds, we feed better food.

Curious about the correlation between food and getting heartworms? I assume if you go for annual visits and dentals you’re not against vet care.

We take our dog to the vet more than annually. She gets her teeth cleaned annually as well. Our vet doesn’t recommend heartworm prevention. I wish we could get away with less visits but our dog gets monthly allergy shots and the vet won’t give those without us staying current on our vaccinations and exams.

Our dog has a condition so he's goes every couple of months for a check-up. He loves his Dr.
No heartworm meds, I don't think it's a concern in our area.

For sure! We always have stray mosquitoes get in, and we even have the yard treated for mosquitos. They are resilient
