Green bean casserole.. I know that quite a few people make it for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas - or it's part of the menu when eating at another family members home..

Yay or nay?

I can eat it, but it's not a favorite.. I'd rather just have french-style green beans with a little garlic salt on them..:goodvibes

How about you?
:)

I am with you. No green bean casserole at all. :sad2:

French-style green beans. :thumbsup2

GBC is a HUGE NO-NO!!!

There is a large debate about this on another board I frequent. I had to laugh seeing it show up here, too! :lmao:

I say yay! I tried Tyler Florence's version last year and it was very well received.

Ingredients
3 pounds green beans
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 loaf crusty Italian bread
3 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
3 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme leaves
1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary leaves
4 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan
5 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 pounds mixed mushrooms (such as button, cremini, shiitake), sliced
2 shallots, sliced
1 cup heavy cream
Directions
Bring a large pot of water to a boil; add a big pinch of salt and the green beans. Cook for about 5 minutes, the beans should still be crisp, they will be cooked more in the oven. Drain them and set aside. Butter a baking dish large enough to hold the green beans with 1 tablespoon butter and set aside.

Heat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Tear the bread into 2-inch pieces, put them into a bowl, and add 1 tablespoon chives, 1 tablespoon thyme, 1 tablespoon rosemary, 2 tablespoons Parmesan, and 3 tablespoons olive oil. Stir well to coat and spread onto a baking sheet. Bake just until the bread just starts to turn golden, about 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside.

Meanwhile, melt the remaining butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the mushrooms and shallots, season with salt and pepper, and cook until the mushrooms have released their liquid, about 10 minutes. Pour in the heavy cream, add the remaining thyme and chives, and cook for another 5 minutes. Add the green beans and stir well. Put the green bean mixture into the prepared baking dish, top with the croutons, and sprinkle on the remaining Parmesan. Bake until everything is hot and bubbling, about 20 to 25 minutes.

I'm not embarassed to admit that I love it. What can I say, I grew up in the suburbs in the 70's. :lmao: It's a guilty pleasure and we really only eat it at the holidays. Green beans are a huge favorite of mine and I'll take 'em pretty much any way I can get 'em.

YES! :thumbsup2 Classic version is a requirement, but only for my girls and I. The DH and the inlaws think we are crazy, but do indulge us. And I actually make "mushroom sauce" to go on our green beans and pork chops throughout the year. I just use the soup, most of the milk and some onion powder.

We aren't very fancy eaters!:rotfl:

Personally I love it!
However a friend of mine who has always been in charge of bringing the "traditional" green bean casserole threw us all for a loop 2 years ago when she brought a green bean casserole whose recipe was found in some Nascar cook book. We call it the redneck casserole :lmao:

I think this is it, she does use canned green beans. This is super super good and we now "demand" that this be the version she brings

1 1/2 pounds fresh green beans or two 9 oz. pkgs.frozen
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon wine vinegar
1 tablespoon minced onion
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 clove garlic -- crushed
1/8 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons bread crumbs
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon butter or margarine -- melted
Paprika

Cut green beans into 1 inch pieces. Cook 5 minutes uncovered 10-15 minutes cov
ered. Drain. Toss green beans, oil, vinegar, onion, salt, garlic and pepper t
ogether. Pour into ungreased 1 quart casserole dish. Mix bread crumbs, grated
cheese and melted margarine or butter. Sprinkle over beans. Sprinkle with pap
rika. Cook uncovered in 350 degree oven for 15-20 minutes in 350 degree oven f
or 15-20 minutes. Serves 6-8.

Its funny you ask this. My mom and I were laughing about this today on the phone. A couple of years ago, my mom, my aunt and I were doing the annual planning of Thanksgiving dinner and divying up the dishes we were going to each bring to the family dinner. So when we got to the "green bean casserole part" my aunt says, "One of you can bring that, I just can't stomache that stuff!" My mom replied, "Oh, I don't ever eat it either but I will make it since everybody else likes it." So I said, "Um....not me. I don't like it and my family (DH, DDs) won't touch it." After talking to some other family members we found out that NO ONE in the family likes it. Some will eat a little to be polite but most pass right by it. Funny thing is, it was at EVERY single Thanksgiving that we could remember. So from that point on, we just did regular green beans or some other vegetables.

Cut to this year: My family (DH and DDs and I) is living far from "home" these days. We will be having Thanksgiving dinner with friends instead of going home for the holidays. As we were doing the menu planning, my friend says "Oh, we need a green bean casserole! Do you want to be in charge of that?" I said, "Errrr.....sure! I can do that. Does your family like that?" She said, "Well, I don't love it but we always have one." :lmao:

I can eat it, not a favorite though.

DD (adult) has a friend (female) that loves the stuff. She makes it at least once a month and sits down and eats the whole thing all by herself!!

Green beans are a huge favorite of mine and I'll take 'em pretty much any way I can get 'em.

DD's FIL too.. He'll eat them cold - straight out of a can, if need be..:goodvibes

Can't stand the stuff, don't even like the looks of it!! I am not a green bean lover in the first place..and dumping mushroom soup and canned fried onions on it isn't my idea of a vegetable. I won't even make it if someone requests it!. I do however like the sound of the french style green beans with some garlic salt on them..thanks for the suggestion!

I can eat it, but don't really like it much. I much prefer fresh green beans baked with a little olive oil and seasoning.

Yay! It is a must. I am TOTALLY bummed when someone subs out green bean casserole for like green beans with slivered almonds or just plain green beans. I'd rather just not have any green beans at all than not have it in a casserole with onion crunchies on top. I make mine from scratch. No soup can base for my casserole.

I like plain green beans but not on Thanksgiving dude!

This is too funny...:lmao:

I wonder how many people make it - thinking it's a "must have" - and actually people are only being polite by eating some?? I know I've done that - when eating at DD's MIL's house..;)

I don't care if everyone else hates it...I love it, so I'm makin' it! If people want some other version of green beans, they should tell me so I can fix that too, or bring their own. Either way there's going to be green bean casserole on my table at Thanksgiving. So there.
