Cane Betrays Lily!
Lily heads off to France this week to start a trial stem cell program, unaware that Cane has gone against her wishes and plans to sue Mac for their unborn twins' amniotic fluid.
"The problem is, Lily is terrified of the risk," explains Daniel Goddard. "If they extract the amniotic fluid, there is a risk, although slight, of infection or some sort of uterine tear, and Mac could miscarry. Lily would rather die than lose the babies. However, Cane will take any risk to save the love of his life. If he has to choose between Lily and the babies, he will choose Lily because he loves her."
As Lily prepares for her trip to France, Cane refuses to sit on his hands and do nothing. "If Lily uses the stem cells from another donor when her immune system is so low and there are any complications, she'll get sicker. If she gets sicker, she can't do chemo, and chemo is the only thing that can cure her," explains Goddard.
Secretly, Cane makes plans to meet with a lawyer so he can discuss suing Mac for the amniotic fluid. "Cane takes it upon himself to say, 'If worse comes to worst, I need to know what my rights are.' Mac refuses to give up the amniotic fluid," says Goddard. "Like Lily, she won't risk the children, either."
Before the lawyer shows up, Cane bumps into Malcolm. Cane asks Malcolm to stay and be a part of the conversation. When the lawyer arrives, he informs Cane that he has a good chance of winning [if he sues Mac for the amniotic fluid]. "It gives him some hope," says Goddard. "And Malcolm is on his side. He wants to save Lily. So Cane decides to sue Mac for the amniotic fluid."
Meanwhile, oblivious to Cane's plan, Lily gets ready to leave for France. "It's your classic carewell, very Romeo and Juliet," smiles Goddard. "Christel Khalil (for some reason it's spelled Crystal in SOW?) played it so wonderfully. She had a copious quantity of dialogue and she flowed through it."
Once Lily is gone, Cane vows to do anything it takes to save the love of his life. "If you are with someone you love, you would do everything possible to save their life," says Goddard. "From a storytelling point of view, this will really test the mettle of Cane and Lily's relationship."
