XXI Olympic Winter Olympics Games Thread

OK, so I watched the video of the Super-G medal ceremony. She did pull the gold medal out after all 3 athletes received their medals and the national anthem had been played when the 3 medalists got together for a photo.

It's in the final 30 seconds of the video. I'm glad to see she didn't pull it out right away, but that's still completely disrespectful.

It was still a picture meant for the gold , silver and bronze in which she got the bronze not the gold.

I can't watch the video since I am in Canada. But from what you said that is what it sounds like to me.

I am waiting for our Canadian figure skater to come on.

They are showing us the medal ceremony for the ladies bobsled right now.

Even still, not cool.

I agree. Take it one medal at a time, and let the medalists in each sport have "their" shining moment. Plenty of time to whip out the stack o'medals later. Michael Phelps knew how to take it one ata atime.

Looks like it wa after the actual ceremony. But in the group picture with her, Mancuso and the winner...she has the gold around her neck AND the bronze.

Very, very tacky.

I just watched the Canadians and Americans receive their bobsledding medals. That was a great ceremony, with athletes that looked like they were having so much fun up there.

I have to say that the American girl, Flatt, was completely hosed by the judges. Not saying that she was as good as the Korean, or even good enough to medal, but her score in the long program was a joke...

I TOTALLY agree!!!!!!! Rachel skated beautifully and to me the landings and overall program was much cleaner than Miki Ando. To receive a lower score than Miki Ando is just WRONG!

What is up with the Japanese skater's score? How could she score that high with those two HUGE mistakes in her program?

This sport is soooo rigged... :sad2:

Awesome finish for Joannie :thumbsup2

Had a good laugh though when DS jokingly said he thought the figure skaters should be wearing helmets. The mental image of them doing jumps and spins wearing helmets, not to mention the embellishment possibilities, had me in stitches.

Overall I was pleased with the figure skating competition this year. The women's free skate was the cleanest I had seen in any Olympics. I think that Rachel Flatt performed her jumps well, but her program did not have as much speed and, well, just seemed to be a bit flat (no pun intended). I thought that Mirai Nagasu skated beautifully. I'm looking forward to seeing what Flatt and Nagasu deliver in Sochi 2014.

It's a shame that Kim and Asada had to compete under the weight of intense nationalism. Asia still has a lot of healing to do from WWII and Japan's colonialism.

I totally agree with everything you said! This was one of the all time best Olympic skating competitions ever for so many reasons. I think that all the skaters skated well, there were some new fresh faces on the medal stand, and there seemed to be excellent sportsmanship demonstrated. I also really enjoyed the commentating done by the NBC team....such a nice change from the complaining done by Dick Button.

I also think it is SUCH a shame to see the pressure put on such young girls in the nationalism you mentioned. It broke my heart to hear that YuNa Kim felt that everyone around her would abandon her if she didn't win the gold. I applaud Brian Orser and the rest of her coaching team for doing all they could to protect her from the intense media during the Games.

I am also pleased that Brian Orser finally got a gold medal. It might not have been the way he expected it, but he did it.

Why, oh WHY couldn't they have kept this to the locker room?? I think there is going to be quite a bit of flak for the celebration that the women took to the ice with. Many of the younger players play for college programs and MANY of them have rules about such conduct - weither you are doing it while on campus or at another location, in uniform or out.

I can understand popping open the bubbly to celebrate, but to crack open the beer - with your 18 year old player fully taking part in the drinking - is pushing just a little to far. Do I expect to see her taking a swig out of the champaigne bottle in the locker room, yes I would expect that and hope that she would celebrate with her teammates. But to be on the ice, with news coverage from around the world there, no you need to think beyond right now.

For the most part, in the 27 pictuers I have seen, those easily identifiable by jersey number, they are the young players - ages are 18, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26, but there is also a 32 year old out there, that with her age, should have used her wisdom and told them, there is a better time and place for THIS TYPE of celebration, if you must celecbrate in this fashion. None of the drinking photos show the 31 year old Captain of the squad drinking.

There have been several things that Canada Olympic officials have taken hits for during these games - open ceremony snafu with the lighting of the flame, the luge/bobsled track, the Zambonie/ice machine issue at long track, the delay issue with skiing (not that they could really control it) - so they didn't need any of there athletes to make questionable decisions. And yes, it had been the US team, I would be all over them as well for not think beyond right now.

I think it's a shame the way some countries see the Olympics. They were mentioning last night that for the S. Korean's anything less than a gold was a failure. That poor girl had the weight of her entire country's expectations on her shoulders. Then when the US skater rose from 6th to 4th, she looked thrilled to death. I was so happy for her. Short track tonight should be very interesting.

I'm sorry, but if this had been the MENS hockey team there would not be anywhere near the outrage over their celebration. There is still a provincial element to society that cringes when women athletes do anything that looks "manly". "Oh my! they're DRINKING BEER!!! :scared1: They're SMOKING CIGARS!! :scared1:" Have these people ever seen a World Series Champion locker room? The beer, the champaigne and the cigars are flowing-and some of those players are pretty young too. The drinking age in BC is 19 from what I understand-so there was perhaps ONE player that was legally underage.

These young women worked their butts off to win this medal and they wanted to celebrate it on their home ice with their fans.

I understand that there are some people who have issues in general with celebrations involving alcohol-and I understand the objections to it, the poor example for young kids and all that. However, I really think in this case more of the objection is because of the fact that these were women than that they were celebrating with alcohol and cigars.

I, too, think that the outrage over the celebration is over-done. They were excited. They won a Gold medal. It is hockey...

I totally agree, and I am VERY conservative in regards to smoking and drinking.

It is not like these girls were smoking and drinking during the medal ceremony.

People need to seriously lighten up.

I'm sure celebrations like this happen all the time. The biggest difference is that nowadays, everyone has a camera and the internet, so that the images are widely accessible.

The same is true for Scotty Lago's pictures - he was at a private party, not in USA uniform, and goofing around with a legal, willing participant. Not in the best taste, but these are young people out celebrating. Had there been no pictures, I'm sure he would not have had any repurcussions.

Gosh, do we all have to be SO SERIOUS all the time?

Since the US skaters were so young (ages 16 and 17, I believe), what happened between the last Olympics and this one with other skaters? Aren't there any older ones that are competing?

I also feel a little bad for Russia in that their ice skating program seems to be falling apart. Their coaches have left for other countries, and they don't have much ice time at the rinks. I hope they can pull something together for the next Olympics when they are hosting them in 2014.
