XXI Olympic Winter Olympics Games Thread

Anyone can have a hunk of metal hanging from a string. :rotfl: Having a lalique piece is quite obviously, one of a kind.

Evan is as far from gay as the owner of this board is straight, for heaven's sake.

Skating is a sport. Anyone who thinks otherwise should try lifting someone over their head while skating, or have someone stand on the back of their leg and continue skating.

Stereotyping is an unpleasant thing. :guilty:

I didn't say skating wasn't a sport or that the skaters weren't athletes. I just don't care for the pomp and circumstance aspect of it.

It did occur to me that male skaters prefer to be around pretty girls, so of course they can't all be gay ;). It was my DH who commented on it (mostly because of the costumes), and the fact that I had recently seen the movie just made me keep thinking of it more.

Words can't describe how upset I am that Sweden just got knocked out by Slovakia. I may just have seen Peter Forsberg's last game on North American ice, which is very depressing.

WOW. DQ'd Koreans lose the gold in ladies short track relay. USA gets a default bronze.

Too bad that a total DQ was the only option. The rest of the field was so far behind that I felt the Korean team should have been awarded the Silver. Apparently that is not an option...

I agree. The Americans might as well have been crawling on their hands and knees.

It was a pretty pitiful race on the part of the Americans....and to be awarded the bronze by default, seems a bit ridiculous as they were SO far behind.

In their defense, they looked a bit sheepish when they were doing their "victory lap".

I want to preface this by saying that I know NOTHING about speed skating other than I think Ono is as cute as a button. From what I have seen, the Koreans (both men and women) skate a very aggressive race. Sometimes that works for you and sometimes it doesn't. Last night it didn't.

From what I saw with the men, I'd say that's an understatement. :rotfl2:

I was actually bit surprised that they bothered with the flag and "victory" lap - and didn't seem to be doing it as if the race were close, but that's the way it goes.

There have been cases where someone (or some team) not even in the final ends up with a medal! In other words, two or more teams in the "big" final were DQ (or DNF), so the top of the "small" final gets bumped up into the medals.

I've been updating the hockey bracket thingie that NBC had on its Olympic site; here it is if anybody's interested.

I changed the start time zones for the 2 semifinal games to Central because, well, it's all about me. ;)

If you did something that resulted in a DQ, you shouldn't be awarded the medal. Kudos to the US for completing the race and putting themselves in position to get a medal.

Just add Canada as the Gold Medalist and it will be complete. :goodvibes

Normally I would agree, but this was not a clear DQ - it was totally a judgment call. It came down to whether or not the official thought that the Koreans were the leader or not going into that turn. If they were the leaders, there was no foul, as it is the responsibility of the person trying to pass to avoid contact. If they were deemed to be the team trying to pass because they were in 2nd place for a fraction of a second until the push put them back in front, then they deserved the DQ - but barely.

Not cut and dried, so a bit more dubious...

I agree that there didn't seem to be a big infraction but that is why they have referees and video replay.

I definitely agree with your statement. I only wish that the Americans had skated a bit better to actually deserve the medal that they were awarded. I think them getting the bronze would be going down better if they actually were in the running for it rather than so far behind.

I also agree that they did look very sheepish as they were skating their victory lap.

I havent' gone through all 72 pages but am curious if anyone saw the Australian speed skaters uniforms? Anyone else get the impression that the designer saw Tron too many times?
Hoping this will work correctly:

It's the 6th photo, lady in green. It was the first thing I thought of watching them.

I watched the qualifying but missed the DQ of the skaters. I guess I need to go and see youtube.

Has anyone watched the curling? I usually listen while puttering around the house and for some reason I swear I hear the ice cream truck there. Interesting sport, it looks easy but you know it is anything but easy. I wonder how much those stones weigh.

I disagree. She was definitely passing the Chinese skater on the inside.

I was wonder who designed the uniforms for the U.S team myself (no offensive). I am talking about the coat and pants the people were wearing after the bob sled races. They are so big and bulky and all one colour with stars.

I know there are people on where who really disliked the snowboarders plaid and "jean" looking pants, but I like them a whole lot better than the blue outfits the skiers and bobsleders are wearing.

I thought she was passing on the inside as well.

With it taking as long as it did, I thought they were actually looking at a block that happened earlier in the race. When the US team made the push/switch, the Canadian girl who had pushed her teammate off, was directly in front of the the US team. She pushed then dirfted more towards the center of the rink then the outside of the rink, like you normally see them do after the swich. She was in the way to the point that the US girl had to come up outta her tuck to keep from running into the Canadian girl. It was about half way thru the race and the US team was still running with the other three teams. It was after the block, that the US team fell way behind. I've heard it stated during these games, that when you come up outta that tuck, it slows all your momentum down. I tried to rewatch the race online, but the computer here at work won't load it up. I'll have to watch it again at home.
