Hi everybody,

I'm mid-vacation at the Wyndham Palace, using the Wyndham-by-Request free high-speed internet, and thought I'd write up a quick review and see if anybody had any questions.

I got the room for $65 a night thru Priceline. I was quite excited because it has a Resort rating and I've never stayed anywhere that I would consider more than 3 star.

REALLY SHORT SUMMARY: Worth the $65 or less, definitely NOT worth rack rates

LONGER SUMMARY: Our flight was late getting in from Minneapolis on Saturday due to the big snowstorm and Mears didn't drop us off until almost midnight, about three hours later than we expected. I was exhausted and stressed from the day (seemed for awhile like they would cancel our flight) and really was looking forward to seeing the hotel. When we checked in and got up to our room, I was so disappointed on top of being exhaused that I started to cry. :( The room was old, shabby and reminded me of the Days Inn in Rochester, Minnesota, that I once checked into and immediately left and went somewhere else. The paint was peeling off the walls, and entrance and bathroom doors appeared to have some sort of smoke damage, the furniture was worn, and the carpet was stained and rippling. The bedspread looked relatively new but when I pulled it back to get into bed, the ruffle separated from the bedspread. I know this is an older building but I don't think our room has been taken care of very well. (FYI: We're in the part of the Palace that has 12 floors, and we're on the 12th floor. We can see Epcot and the fireworks from our balcony.)

At that point, if this hadn't been a prepaid Priceline stay, I would have turned right around and moved down the street. We stayed at a much cheaper Hilton Garden Inn in Eagan the night before we flew out and it was 10 times nicer, roomwise.

But, we had paid (and for 7 nights) so we decided to stay and try to not let it ruin our vacation. Even though it was late, we decided to walk over to Downtown Disney since we've never been, and see what was over there. It was an amazingly close walk. Down the elevator from our pool, past the pool/Recreation Island, and across a road, we were there. Walk time, about two minutes. We really liked Downtown Disney and have been back several times, and its proximity to the Wyndham Palace is a definite plus.

The pool area is not terribly large but there are usually only 2-3 people in it. I'm amazed by how deserted the pool area is every day, even in midday when it's so hot. It seems most of the people here are not tourists, but businesspeople. There is another smaller pool that is usually closed due to some sort of business function, so we haven't been to it. There is a pool concierge that is heavily marketed by the hotel and is barely ever open. We've only see it open once and that was at exactly noon.

No one said anything about us being Priceline customers and we've received only wonderful service from the staff. We're WBR members and got a fruit plate and bottled water. It wasn't much but it was a nice touch.

The food is insanely priced - a 20 oz Coke costs more here than at Disney World. When we're hungry for a quick snack, we walk to the McDonalds at Downtown Disney. The small shop sells sandwiches and desserts but nothing has a price label. We bought two 20 oz pops, a tiny Pringles (snack size, 13 chips or so) and a candy bar for $13. We haven't been back since.

The lobby and common areas are nice, but there are little things everywhere that make me question the hotel's rating. The hallways are dark, mildewy and discolored, again with stained carpets, and the paint on our door is about 30% chipped and peeling. We haven't seen any other floors besides our floor so we may have just had the bad luck to end up on the worst floor.

The gift shop on the first floor which sells Disney tickets and souvenirs tried to convince me that I had to buy my E-tickets at the park gates. I explained to her, no, you buy e-tickets at your resort. She got quite upset and called someone to ask, who confirmed that yes, you buy e-tickets at your resort. She glanced at her computer and said they weren't available. I had a feeling she was outright lying, but I let it go and went back later that night and got my e-tickets when a different man was working without any problem. (And, on a side note, E-nights must be the best idea Disney has ever had - what a great night.) Unpleasant people show up everywhere but that little episode made me pretty upset.

This is our fourth day here now and I no longer sit around worrying about the chipped paint or the stained carpets. We're here so little during the day it's just not that important. However, I really don't care for the resort in general and probably would avoid bidding 4 star/resort in the future just to avoid it. Rack rates for this resort are in the $150-$250 range and I would feel robbed if I had paid that. We went to the Contemporary for dinner last night and even though the style doesn't really appeal to me, I was so impressed by the cleanliness and theming I think this will be my last trip offsite.

Any questions, I'd be glad to answer them.

Thank you for your report. It was very well written, and a little scary! I have been happy with Priceline three star rooms so far, but will be leery now of trying for a four star. This isn't the first time I've heard of experiences like yours. Hope your trip is great anyway!

bmleroy-
I'm very sorry that your stay at the Wyndham Palace is not as good as you expected. I have stayed there 6 or 7 times over the past couple of years (all through Priceline) and I will have to agree that over that time I have noticed that the hallways and room doors could use some renovation. On the other hand, I can't say that I have had complaints about the interiors of the rooms that I have had. If your assigned room was as you described, I would have requested to have it changed. The fact that you have a Priceline reservation is no reason to be given a room in unacceptable condition. Unfortunately, perhaps your room assignment was given due to your late arrival, with not many rooms left. They should have at least given you something else the next day if you requested it. I usually have checked-in at 3:00 pm or before and maybe that makes a difference.
I will agree that the pool there is only average and the prices for food are expensive. For that reason I have only eaten at the hotel once and that was the Sunday character buffet with my grandson and that was too expensive also! On the plus side, of course, is the proximity to Downtown Disney and I found the bus service to the parks to be OK.
I hope the remainder of your stay is great!

We stayed there once through Priceline and had the same experience. The room was horrible! Peeling wallpaper, a doorknob that was about to fall off, stained carpets, torn drapes and bedspreads, etc. We checked in early, and the hotel was nowhere near capacity. I am convinced that they gave us the room they did because we went through Priceline. I was disappointed when we saw the room, but decided just to chalk it up to bad luck. The real kicker though, was coming back from the parks that first night. We had checked in and dropped our luggage off that morning, then headed straight for the parks. When we returned late that night with 2 very tired kids, we pulled the bedspreads down and discovered that the sheets had not been changed. I won't go into the very gross details, but it was bad enough that we ended up getting our Priceline room comped. I don't care to ever stay there again!

Im sorry to hear about your hotel room. Thats just uncalled for! I would have demanded a different room. It just upsets me to hear stories like yours....some people save for such a long time to take their family on a nice vacation..........to have something like this happen.
My husband, son and I stayed at the Dolphin Hotel 2 yrs ago. The price of the room was $275 a night. We when arrived I was in totally amazed by the lobby.....it was beautiful. Then we took the elevator up to our room......when we got off .........the smell was horrible. This musky smell hit you hit the face.......YUCK!!! Then we got inside our room, it was okay but i thought geesh this is all you get for almost $300 a night. The room consisted of 2 double beds, a chair, and a mini bar. The bathroom was large i have to admit but i think i just expected alittle more for the price. But as time went by and we had time to use the hotels amenties like pool, game room ,etc we realized why we paid so much and it was well worth it. We had such a relaxing time at the Dolphin........everyone was so nice. The food was great. We would pay that price again any day.
We leave for Florida again in 2 days......and we have reservations for The Ramada Inn Maingate and I'm so leary about this hotel. I have yet to get any reviews on it. Well i guess we aill see, and if my room is yucky.........i will demand another room or else i will go find another hotel. We have been looking forward to this vacation for so many months...i refuse to have it ruined due to a hotel room.

Hi Brandy,

I hope you are having a great vacation in spite of the dismal hotel room. I am surprised Wyndham would let the hotel get so run down. It is such a popular hotel. Any chance of switching rooms?

I also pm'd you.

My first thought was to change rooms, but my fiance is VERY non-confrontational - he'll let anything go short of the room actually being on fire, or it already having people in it - and he really didn't want me to argue. I'd bragged so much about the great deal we got on Priceline versus rack rates and he said this was probably the group of rooms they gave to the people with much lower rates. :(

Even on the bus transportation that goes to all the Downtown Disney hotels, people will sometimes hear us say we're going to the Wyndham and say, wow, that's a really nice place, how do you like it? I always say it's fine without elaborating, but people have high expectations of it as I did. I'm more than a little disappointed. This may have been the "Palace" of Downtown Disney back in the day, but it's certainly nothing special anymore, and is actually more rundown than I'm accustomed to seeing on my always-small travel budget.

Having been here a little longer, some observations:
The bus service is spotty, is sometimes very good (20 minute cycles or less) and is sometimes very bad (an hour or more) for the same route.
The guests are mainly businesspeople and the hotel does mostly convention business.
The room doors are so thin and have such huge gaps around them that hallway conversations might as well be in the room with us. The maids chitchatting in the hallway wake us up daily.
The "Privacy Please" sign on the doorknob apparently means nothing to anyone! To put it as tastefully as I can, my fiance and I are here for our anniversary trip, and they need to knock then wait, not knock as they're opening the door with their key. There is no additional lock on the door besides the automatic lock. I have considered wedging a chair in front of the door.
The highspeed Internet is free for WBR members and works great. My TV folio shows they've been charging me for 800 calls, which should be free, but that I'll argue at checkout.

Non-Wyndham observations:
I love E-nights.
I love Disney World.
Is it really almost time to go home?
:(

We stayed there over Easter break. The room was ok but definately not worth the $135.00 a night we had to pay. The room was beat up, loose door handles ect. We had a wheelchair so we entered through the convention center. After doing this and seeing workers touch up the paint ect each day I feel they keep the convention end looking prime & let the rooms go. We ended up leaving as we were able to get in Disneys Carribbean Beach for $107 a night and it was great.

I'm so sad to hear this hotel has fallen into disrepair... 12 years ago my husband won a sales incentive trip at work: 7 nights at the then Buena Vista Palace, length of stay passes, rental car and $500.00 spending cash. I have such fond memories of that trip and we really enjoyed the hotel. We had a junior suite on the first floor with a patio that overloooked the stream in the back. Everything seemed first rate back then. Too bad.:(
