We are currently without health insurance until Sept 1st, that's when Dh's kicks in. Thank god, we are all healthy but believe me it has been a stressful time for me. I could have gotten cobra but couldn't afford it for $1000 a month and was told that if someone got hurt, we could write the check then and we would be covered retroactive. So far, all is well. One more week to go.

My girlfriend who lives across the street is having a party for her son on Saturday and we are of course invited. It was supposed to be a pool party but the pool in out subdivision is not ready so my friend just informed me that she got a jumpy thing. DD5 and DD3 have been hurt on jumpys in the past and i have seen others hurt as well. I am not overprotective at all and it we had the coverage, I wouldn't think twice. Her son is a rough and tough boy and I imagine most of the party goers will be rough and tough boys as well. Even if DD5 doesn't get hurt, I will probably need medical attention from the stress. I feel bad about not going, because her DS and DD are very close with DD5, they play together all the time. I even thought about having DH taken them over and I go somewhere else but I still think I will be nervous. If we don't go we will have to take DD's somewhere for the day so they don't see the party going on.

Am I being paranoid? DD5 had her tooth kicked in on a jumpy a few years back but there were too many kids, DD3 hurt her hand and I saw two kids bang into each other and bump head pretty bad. I don't think DD3 will want to go in, she gets nervous around alot of older kids.

I do not like trampolines either! My brother has one and I sit by very nervous when my son goes on it.

Hey look at it this way if your child gets hurt you can go after their home owners for the medical bills!!! I am just kidding!

FWIW... you could have her treated at an urgent care center (those free standing cash-based medical places) for much less than your cobra payment.

I would keep her safe as possible--but I don't think it is necessary to overprotect.

I always watch my kids in the jumpy and do not hesitate to have the kids chill when smaller kids are present. My girls have fortunately never been injured.

I understand though the murphy's law of not having medical insurance with only a few days until you are finally insured again.

This is just a future note thing but when DH left his one job we couldn't afford the Cobra either but we did get something called Extend benefits. There were all different plans, we chose one that was only 188.00 a month and you can use them for up to 2 years, this way we had protection just in case.

On the OP- I'd let them go to the party, although I totally understand your feelings on not wanting them to go.

If this is a close friend I'd talk to her about limiting the number of children in the jumpy. If it's a normal sized one 3-4 kids is really all you should have. The more oversized ones can maybe handle 6.

If that's not possible I wouldn't go - insurance or no insurance. I don't care if my policy took care of the bills and gave me spending money I wouldn't put my child in a position to get her teeth knocked out.

We rented a moonbounce for my boys birthday party when they were 5 and 8yo and nobody got hurt. We supervised it at all times or had another adult supervising. I can understand why you'd be concerned, but I don't think that your children should pay the price. I would go and watch them. If it gets too wild, remove them from the moonbounce until it settles down a bit. I would have the older kids jumping with the older kids and the younger kids with the younger kids. I also agree about limiting the number of kids who are in there at one time.
