I am just about finished scanning in tons of slides but also some old black and white photos. I had to take crumbling old photo albums apart and some were just lose photos in a stack. I could buy photo albums and put them back in, but on the other hand, I have scanned them all in to the computer, plan on burning DVDs so what is the point of photo albums? I am considering storing them in tupperware type containers that seal and keeping them in a dark place. That would be more compact, less time consuming and more cost efficient. The scanned pictures look better than the originals. They are clearer so is there a point in putting them in albums? :confused3

Actually, I would put them in albums just to know that they are in a book or something that you have labeled. You can always know they are on a bookshelf or something.
If stored in a bin, you will eventually move them somewhere and it will all blend in.
But, that's just me.

I've spent the past year and a half scanning thousands of photos - not an exaggeration - all of mine - all of DD and her DH's - and a bunch that were my mom's.. Everything from tin types to black and white to Polaroid to color - and I'm still not done..

In my case though, many of the originals go into the scrapbooks I make.. (Although I also have many that are duplicates..) However, some need to be touched up on my photo program, so I go ahead and do that and print out a new copy..

As I go along, I back them up on discs..

Storage for the photos themselves are these really nice Hallmark photo boxes that I was able to get for $3 each at Ocean State Job Lot.. (Imagine a recipe box - only longer, deeper, and much stronger..) I then purchased index dividers (some came with the boxes, but I needed waaaay more) and have them stored according to categories; events; places; etc..

It's a lot of work, but I enjoy "organizing" and many, many times my DGD has come home from school and said, "I need a picture of me when I was a baby" - or "I need a picture of my grandparents" - etc. - and I can go right to the boxes and pull out the needed photo without having to take the time (or use the ink) to print out what she needs..

Photos are very, very important to me.. Not only are they backed up on discs, but the discs are backed up as well and the second batch are stored in a different house.. It's the story of all of our lives - and I would be crushed if somehow they were all destroyed..:sad1:

I have some of those boxes, and the advantage is, some of the photos are written on the back so it would be easy to read the back in the box that you described. That's a good idea actually, I didn't think of the boxes until you mentioned them.

Are these boxes are available at Hallmark stores?

Are they like these? http://www.archivalusa.com/storage-boxes.html
I was just looking at this website and thinking of ordering a few of their acid free boxes.

In your opinion, which ones would be better for storing photos?

I have read somewhere NOT to put them in a tupperware type container.
They said the photos in shoeboxes will last longer. Something about it being airtight in those tupperware containers..not sure.

I don't see the particular ones there that I got.. I assume they no longer carry them in stock at the Hallmark stores and that's why they were so dirt cheap at Ocean State Job Lot.. I went to two different locations and all total, I purchased 25 of them over a 3 to 4 month period.. As I said, I have thousands of photos to store.. Mine hold the 4x6 photos.. I haven't been to OSJL in months, so I don't know if they still have them or not..

You often find Hallmark products there at ridiculously low prices.. If there is one near you, it wouldn't hurt to look and see if they have anything right now..:goodvibes

Forgot to mention they will also hold CD's in cases as well.. Actually, that's what they were originally for, I think.. They come with index dividers, a CD marker, and note cards (with envelopes) that you can insert photos in.. It was really quite a bargain!

You can also get the photo storage boxes at Michaels or Hobby Lobby and JoAnn's. If you have any of these near you, purchase them when you have a 40/50% coupon or when they are on sale (and perhaps you have an additional % coupon.) Kohls has them sometimes too and when on sale, combined with a %off coupon, are reasonable.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of those places but I will check them out.

Fantastic link. Thank you!
