WWYD? School Dress code update #63

I'm all about following rules but this is over the top. I can tell you that they would give my K ds detention over my dead body.

Heck, our kids can't even wear socks with one thin little colored line on them. Plain white, black or khaki--only choices and they actually do "sock checks!!". And jackets cannot have hoods--in 8th grade "no pockets" will be added to that.

We do have uniforms, but we don't buy them through the school system like some of the private schools do (actually it is called a "dress code" not uniforms for that very reason). All of the public schools around here have basically the same rules, some even stating what color shoes the kids can wear (but those schools let them wear bright colored socks!! :scared1: )

I feel for you OP, it can be very frustrating! And although I get the reasoning behind the "no logo" rule, for the most part it doesn't really help.

I can't, for the life of me, figure out why pockets would matter in Kindergarten but our 8th grade can't have them because of one problem, one time, 4 years ago. A high school kid got off the high school bus and went walking through the junior high building looking for someone, he had his hood up the whole time so they didn't realize he didn't belong and they think he may have had a weapon in his pocket. By the time enough people saw him and realized he wasn't supposed to be there; he took off. So now they have the no pocket, no hood rules in 7th and 8th grade. (I guess 7th graders would never bring a weapon in their pocket :confused3).

As for advice: OP, just keep searching online for plain shorts. Sporting goods stores will probably be your best bet for plain with no pockets.

Okay I was seriously up most of the night worried about this... We have a VERY VERY strict dress code that went into affect (or effect? lack of sleep) this year.

My son has gym today they are allowed to wear their gym clothes to school (he's in K) The dress code is this plain colored clothes with no logo at all on them or no pockets.. well I wasn't able to find shorts plain colored with no pockets, no logos on them I did find starter shorts with a star on them the same color of the shorts. he wore them for 3 wks now with no problem.. well at open house someone said they were cracking down on those shorts :scared1: and were giving out detention for wearing them..

Last week the weather was cooler so I was just going have him wear sweatpants (which are allowed) but its going to be near 90 today and he is in a gym class room with 130 other kids (seperated by "walls") and it gets to be over 100 in there :( I told dh to stop and get new shorts last night for him at walmart.. well he came home with cargo shorts aaarrrrgggg pockets! :headache:

I sent him in the illegal shorts today.. I packed another set of "uniform clothes" for just in case... what would you have done? sent him in "illegal" shorts, sweatpants or a uniform? they DO get docket for not dressing. Yes we are talking about 5 yr olds in kindergarten... :headache:

I would call and ask if they knew where you could find the shorts without a logo. I understand their reasoning, I guess, but it's going to be hard to find shorts like that. I've seen them with no logos, but with pockets. Do they mean they can't even have the inside pockets?!

I'm just extremely thankful my son's school doesn't have a strict dresscode. He has pretty severe SID, especially tactile, and I'm afraid I'd just have to pull him out and homeschool him. Collared shirts really bother him, as does tucking things in. It would be a disaster.

I have often wondered if a child had a medical reason that he/she could not wear the "dress code" as stated, would they have to make special allowances? Seems like the should have to.

Now that you say that, I bet it could be put into their 504's (a "plan" that states the accomodations necessary for the student, due to their disability).

Sorry to post and run, after we drop them off at the bus stop we go for a long dog walk and to the park. :)

The dress code is for a public school. Its VERY strict. Most other schools around me have dress codes but ours by far is the worst... I really didn't worry about the shorts until the other mom said something to me about them. I figured the heat was over I'd just put him in sweats.. little did I know we'd have a heat wave this far into sept! If it was in a reg. class room I might have put him in pants but it gets so hot in that half butted classroom he's in. I just couldn't do it. So far I haven't gotten a call about it but I wont know the real out come til I get them off the bus at 4. I swear if he gets detention for this crap I am going to scream.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I got an e-mail this morning from The Children's Place and they're having terrific sales. They have shorts for boys that are plain, no pockets, and no logos. They're described as "uniform knit shorts" in navy blue or gray, and look extremely comfortable.:) They hit just above the knee and look like sweatpant material.

And as far as the school giving detentions to kids that wear "inappropriate" shorts, that is just wrong.:sad2: Kids, especially the very young ones, have no control over whether or not their clothes fall within the school's rules. I was a first grade teacher for over fifteen years, and I would never have given a detention to a child for such a ridiculous thing.

I think the dress code is over the top, and the Childern's Place sounds like a great solution, but if you need another idea...I'd buy another (cheap) pair of sweatpants and cut them off into shorts. I'd hem them--just fold over the fabric and either hem on sewing machine or use that iron on hem stuf...hmmm fabric glue might even work.

If you have a pair from last year that fit and the waist, but not in the length, use those to make into shorts.

I am not sure if its the k teacher giving the detention or the gym teacher. Here is how wonderful the school is.. they are selling "school approved" clothes.. one of the items is dickie brand clothing.. well one of the teachers yelled and send a kid to the office for inschool supension for wearing them. :confused3 I hate that school so much right now i can not even put it into words. I will check out the childrens place for those shorts! i wish we had a store around me or a target or a jcpenney.. you see where I'm going with this? ;):rotfl:

"Students must where pants with bottom hems that fall now lower than 4 inches below the knee, the right leg must be blue and the left leg must be gold (school colors!). Only white, short sleeve, collared shirts with a single chartreuse horizontal stripe no wider than 2mm and 10 inches from the bottom hem are allowed. Pockets are permitted but only on the right side of the pants or on the left sleeve of the shirt. You may not have both, only one pocket. Socks must be white or black and may show no less than one inch above the shoe and no more than 2 inches below the knee. Shoes must be entirely white or entirely black, unless they are khaki with a red stripe on them (only single red stripe is permitted - see the office for a swatch of the red shade that is allowed). No part of the exposed and dangling shoe lace may be longer than 2 inches when tied. Double knots are not permitted."

Is this what "dress codes" are coming to?

The only thing on not allowing pockets that I can think of is that maybe they are concerned they will get caught on things and pull the shorts.

:scared1: OMG and I thought ours was bad.. only allowed to have one pocket made me giggle.. who the hell measures the shoe laces?!?! No double knots? yeah lets let the kids trip instead

I was going to suggest that you go to the PTA and ask for a school approved clothing sale, but if the teachers aren't going to abide by it, I guess it doesn't make much of a difference.

We didn't have a no logo rule, but t-shirts had to be approved prior to use. The PTA ran a spirit clothing sale each year that included everything that would be acceptable for gym. Not only did the kids get them but parents bought them for themselves, too. Since they were nice and logo'd with the school's mascot.

It made it much easier than trying to find things on your own.

Luckily, the middle school allows them to wear anything to gym, so I don't have to worry about that anymore. Even my DS's private HS allows the kids to wear any type of t-shirt and shorts as long as they aren't too short.

See this is the problem with the school systems. Sure we can't control bullying, sure some of our kids are several grade levels behind where they should be, but by golly they have shorts with no logos and t shirts with no logos. Talk about screwed up situation.

PP not talking about "your" school, just school in general that have this attitude.

Since they can't control (or at least figure out how to fix) the other stuff, they figure it makes them look good that they are "controlling" this. Makes them look like they are on top of things.......

You have uniforms, that is why you don't see a problem. I am sure uniforms would be better than this dress code. I would love to see uniforms for our kids, but no luck, isn't going to happen.

I would never accept this punishment, and as far as shorts, you can't find them and I am sorry but going to a sporting good store you may find something but probably not, and if you do, you need a small loan for basic pull on sports shorts, No way would I spend that kind of money.

Rules like this need to be changed, and not just gone along with. They are unreasonable. We have a very strict school system here where I live, but his isn't even close to our dress code. The worry about length and inappropriate sayings and logos, but that is all. Seems to me, these schools need to be more concerned with teaching than with logos, that is over the top.

I dont know where you shop but I assure you I did not break the bank buying these shorts at a sporting goods store. Modells and the rest of them have coupons too. I dont spend a fortune on clothing.

All kinds of places have clothing rules, I really dont get what the big deal is, like I said I had to get them so my kid could play flag football at age 7. Am I throwing a fit about, no, I buy what is required, just like if I had a job that required a certain item.

My understanding of the no pocket rule in gym class (they have it in the Flag Football handbook too) is that they dont want it catching on anything or anyone.

I'm sorry you are dealing with this. I've learned to shop online for our uniform stuff. Sometimes it's hit or miss when it comes to sizes, but at least they have something that conforms. And I don't have to go running all over the place!

And if I don't have something they can wear to school I will gladly call in and tell the attendance office that they will be staying home because they have no uniform clothes to wear. Let the admin get sick of hearing that excuse and maybe they will do something about this silly policy.

Maybe you don't see the big deal, but this dress code is way over the top. I see many others agree.

for flag football, they supply the uniforms, well we pay for the, we don't have to go out and search for something that fits their
rules.

I guess I have a problem with not having a problem with this dress code. With so many other things to worry about, how about just saying that nothing vulgar nothing too short and no tummies or undies hanging out, that about covers it. This is what our school system uses and it works quite well.

I don't know of any school that doesn't have some kind of a dress code, some are more strict than others, this one is ridicules.
.

Actually my girls went to a public high school in North Dakota that had absolutely NO dress code. It was crazy...they came home from school the first day and couldn't believe some of the skanky clothes some kids wore! :scared1:

Soffes are basically the only thing I know that are "plain".

Here is the guys...Sporting good stores and other discount stores will carry them. Interesting, online there is more selection that might fit a dress code.

http://www.soffe.com/webapp/wcs/sto...toreId=10051&catalogId=11102&categoryId=16270

My oldest has a pair that are "approved" for now.. everything must be down to the knee.. once she's grows an inch they'll be out! They are allowed to wear yoga pants thankfully or we'd be pretty much screwed... I'll have to take a look at the online selection I haven't seen them in stores for boys.. you'd think stores would stock up on this plain crap because they know we need it but instead we are forced to shop online or go an hour away to the "good stores"
