WWYD: Pet Sitter

Man, you all are harsh. I would give her a second chance. It has nothing to do with "helping her out", but more "treat others like I'd like to be treated." The excuse she gave is plausible, and she is (presumably) human. And if she is 15 minutes late to visit the dog, does that really make that much of a difference?

She's a vet tech, so qualified to do the work, and has good references.

In some situations, you have to be harsh.

In this one, disaster can ensue if the tech does not show up to do the job. This isn't sitting a healthy kitten, a job you can test out a teen since cats can normally be pretty independent, and if forgotten for a day or two, will be okay. This is a senior cat with kidney disease, something that needs daily monitoring and likely timely and accurate food and fresh water provision. This cat can't be the "practice/try out" job. And if you can't show up to the interview, you were taking this like a "practice/try out" job.

There are some things you can take a chance with, I agree with all of the other posters that this isn't one. And I don't think the excuse is plausible. I know what my day looks like even if my phone is out of commission. When she realized her kid wasn't feeling well, she should have looked at her day and rescheduled or planned accordingly. I personally wouldn't leave a healthy animal in her care, let alone a senior with special requirements.

It's a job they failed to show up for. I've seen enough slackers in my day to know it won't get better and OP would be worried the entire time. Not worth it.

OP never did come back, but I am hoping for an update.

You do you. Personally, I would have given her a second chance. That doesn't mean she automatically gets the job. That means I schedule another time for her to come over and get the keys/instructions. I've had plenty of times where I get side tracked and if my alarm didn't go off, I'd miss the appointment.

I agree I would give second chances for most things.

Interview for cleaning my apartment? Sure, I'll give you another chance. But for taking care of Walnut who needs meds? No way. Only the best! ❤

Yup, this is why I gave the answer I did. A pet with medical needs you need to feel confident in their abilities to take it seriously, to have the attentiveness. Of course this could have just been a blip with the vet tech and she's normally very serious about her duties but if it's going to cause the person to worry about it while out of town..that second chance just isn't worth it. I'm normally fairly understanding and usually give the benefit of the doubt but this is a case where I'm just going to find someone else.

we have used pet sitters for years, they are great when you find the right one. But you need one that takes the job serious. I really think a lot of the kids on rover, are on there because mom told them they need to get a job. I would check on Next Door to get recs from real neighbors

Get a new sitter. I once had a sitter not show up at all. Thankfully we had family in the area to stop over but we were forced to come home instead of staying overnight like planned.

we tried to schedule a rover interview several times and they never showed. That is why they are on rover and do not have a real job

That's such a rude comment. Many people join apps like that as a side job to earn extra money. I used to do TaskRabbit and I had a "real job."
