I am so confused right now. I had a roast in the fridge to throw in the oven for today, but this morning I wake up and the roast is gone, only the packaging remains in shredded pieces around my dog's bed!

He ate an entire raw roast!

This won't hurt him right? I mean, that is what dogs would normally eat "in the wild" right?

Now, maybe some people's dogs are clever enough to smell a roast, track it to the fridge, open the door and take out the roast without disturbing anything else, closing the fridge door behind them...but MY dog...this is a mystery, lol.

Is this common? :confused3

I am a worrywart so I would call the vet but chances are he will be fine. I would worry more about the packaging.

So what is for dinner now? ;)

He'll probably be fine assuming it wasn't an old raw roast. My dog loves eating raw meat, and our old dog only ate raw meat.

Now my dog, she once drank a 3 foot bottle of wine. We had just gotten her, she was a little 2 pound puppy. We had to leave her alone to go to my sister's graduation, and somebody had gifted my dad with a 3 foot bottle of wine, which we put in the corner, because what else are we going to do with it? We come home, the bottle is broken, glass all over the place, and my dog is racing back and forth, all wobbly, tripping over herself. The next day, my dog could not move, I think she had one hell of a hangover. This was red wine, and my dog, being concientious, made sure she lapped it all up before it stained the carpet.

If he hasn't thrown up by now, he is probably okay. But still call the vet to be sure.
I know my dog couldn't open the fridge, that is so crazy!
Maybe someone in your family took the roast out to get something behind it, set it down on the counter and forgot to put it back. Was it on a plate, and is the plate still in the fridge?

My dog just ate catfish grease and whatever else out of the trash this morning.:headache:

Dog will live.... Now your floor is another matter.;)

Dogs can handle alot of bacteria, they have a special kind of gut.

So grease vs a raw roast. I think I would take the roast. Grease can't be good.

If the dog is not used to eating raw meat....and doesn't have frequent changes to his food, I would definately be prepared for potty issues today and tomorrow. What goes in must come out!!!

My only advice is you better find a way to secure the fridge door. Because now he knows! :lmao:

Years ago, my Akita took a package of SOLID FROZEN chicken breast off the counter and ate it. He was fine. I was shocked. HA!

My dog got into the trash once and ate raw chicken. He would not stop vomitting... However I think it was a couple of days old since it was in the trash.

Umm..............no this is not common:lmao: I would be trying to make some money off of this dog, if he is that good at sneaking food out of the fridge, he must be smarter than you think.

I don't know about the roast, but we did have a dog who, one year, ate the Thanksgiving turkey.

I had an Akita ... she was the smartest dog ever! We couldn't leave anything within "nose reach".

Our dog once ate a plate of lobster shells. Yes. Shells. Same dog ate all my daughter's underwear, which became clogged in his intestine, requiring $3000 worth of surgery to save his life.

Labrador Retrievers are garbage disposals.

As for the roast - I literally laughed out loud, because our dog would have done the same thing. I'm sure he'll be fine. You can always call the vet to make sure. What breed is he? I'm sorry, I can't stop laughing. I can't imagine the look on your face upon discovering the roast was gone!

Thank goodness it wasn't the Thanksgiving Turkey!!! ROFL

I know you don't think it is funny, but I actually was giggling a little when I read your post. My mom probably could relate though. Years ago, and I mean a lot of years ago, we had a dog who somehow never ate out of her food bowl but was getting fat. Around that time things were missing from the fridge and freezer and my mom was always blaming one of my bros. Now this was a kid who would eat frozen french fries and fishsticks because he was either lazy or was that hungry. Turns out, in the middle of the night, my bro would go into the kitchen and feed himself and the dog out of the fridge and freezer. Got so my brother would be in the freezer while the dog was dragging stuff out of the fridge and my brother would clean up after them. It was all fun and games until the dog got so good at cleaning out the fridge, my brother was bragging about our dogs accomplishments and mom was already stewing about the roast that missing!

Any chance you have a person who likes to hang out at fridge late at night?

If it was a lean beef roast-the dog should be okay. May act a little strange-lazier than usual.
If it was a pork roast or had quite a bit of fat...dog may start throwing up. Dogs digestive systems have an incredibally hard time with fat.

With my dogs, I have to make sure all cabinets, closet doors, the fridge door (and freezer) door are shut. A kiddie gate in my kitchen door helps some. Having labs, I raise the gate up about 5 inches from the floor. Enough were it is harder to jump over, but not high enough for them to crawl under.

A plastic ruler stuck between the handles of the fridge and freezer (if side by side) works wonders. Admit it looks a little strange-but it keeps both the food & dogs safe. I have a "toddler lock" on it, now. A little inconvient, but worth it. It cost around $6 at Wal-Mart, back in the baby section.

Hope your pooch is ok Skywalker. Since we're discussing this, my dog once ate raw dough for 3 dozen dinner rolls that had been left out to rise the night before thanksgiving. That wasn't pretty.

The dog should be good. Just watch and let him out often.
We had a German Short Hair Pointer that I swear was dumber than a box of rocks.
At one point in my life, I was trying to domestic myself a little and hung a towel on the handle of the fridge door. You know, to look pretty. I came home one day to the fridge open and me thinking I didn't close it hard enough. Mentioned it to dh who agreed.
Then one day we both left and came home to the fridge open and a whole loaf of bread gone. Just the bag is laying there. We were stunned to think that Sam was able to pull open the fridge door open with the towel hanging there. Wow..he had us fooled!

I know my dog used to open the fridge and stove because I used to leave the dish towels on the handles. I stopped doing that when I saw her open one.

just think in a couple of days you will have your own "dog ate _____ story to tell":goodvibes

I think I would call the vet and ask what to watch out for then if you have an issue your vet already has a heads up on the situation.

My golden lab growing up at the entire Christmas ham. We found out after we came in from being out in the freezing cold tromping around for the perfect tree. One of my four siblings said "Mom why does the dog look pregnant?":rotfl: the dog's stomach was literally in the shape of a ham.

My mom was not happy but of course we tell this story every time we have a big ham!

Bathroom issues were all I can remember and my Mom trying to get an alternate meal for Christmas.
