WTH China???

That is unbelievably cruel and senseless. They could have controlled rabies without beating 50,000 animals to death. And honestly, why didn't they use another method? Not that it would have been much better, but a quick death would have been much less inhumane.

That makes me sick.

This is a culture that is philosophically different than our own with respect to the value of animal life. We don't have to agree with it, but in some sense, they probably are saving some small amount of human life by doing this. Maybe I'm desensitized to it. I walk through Chinatown sometimes and see ducks, beaks still attached, blanched and hanging upside down from strings at the delis.

Caradana, I see what you are saying............
I am so upset that they felt they needed to do this so publicly! Gosh.
Ummm, get a truck and load them up at least and do it somewhere else!
:confused3

Honestly, I can understand it is a different culture...but beating the dogs to death? Even if you do not value the animal in the least, that is time consuming, I would imagine physically exhausting and potentially dangerous (after all, rabies is what they are being accused of, so to speak). I just think a bullet to the head would have been more efficient. And it would have been less painful for the animals.

It's a sad day when it costs $0.63 to bait people to kill dogs, but over $1 to vaccinate them, no?

Oh my - this is quite sad... :sad2: :sad2: :sad2:
Poor defenseless dogs...

I hate to admit it but this *IS* a case for PETA. That's horrible. I don't care if the culture is different. Cruelty and barbarism is the same everywhere.

As a dog owner, I can't imagine walking my dog and him being snatched from my control and beaten to death right in front of me. Different culture or not, how can anyone think that is appropriate to do?!

I mistakenly opened the page and now I'm crying over that picture.

LOL, I was thinking the same thing. (about PETA) and I wholeheartedly agree with the rest.

We disagree with their policies, but we keep buying their products. People are lining the streets of Miami cheering for the imminent death of Castro, yet we rush out to buy anything we can get our hands on made in that other communist country whose human rights violations are just as bad. So, everyone who bought something made in China today might as well have been beating that dog themselves.

 You'd better not have one piece of glass in your house.

Actually, I think that human rights violations are likely worse in China than in Cuba nowadays but that aside this is such an odd story. Why only dogs? Many other animals transmit rabies so why only dogs?

My windows were made at the local factory, not in China. Yours?

I'm just sick of all these people who march against abortion, but won't stand up to China (with their wallets), who forces women to have abortions. If you buy stuff from China, you are paying for those forced abortions. And the people who hate animal cruelty, but still buy Chinese goods, when China can legally make small plushies with cats and dogs. Hey, talk is cheap. Isn't it time we made an effort not to buy their goods?

Wow, they beat every single pet dog in that province to death. Only military and police guard dogs were spared. Hmm. It makes you wonder if the government just doesn't want the people to be protected by dogs.

I didn't open the link because those sort of photos upset me greatly. Other than Panda Bears, I don't believe the Chinese hold any animal in respect. If they obviously have no intention of improving their treatment of humans, I see no hope at all for the animals. Very sad.

My thoughts exactly!

oh that truly makes me ill... just read some of that to my kids, with the lesson learned be glad that we live in the US.

This is just sick. I don't care what your cultural beliefs, it is obvious that someone cares for the animal if they are out walking it. To grab that animal and beat it to death in front of them is just sick and there's no way anyone will convince me this is just a matter of cultural differences. They should have had more compassion for the humans in this senerio if nothing else.
