Or "Mean Girls Run Amok". There is no excuse for cheating, but this is a "self confessed" cheater who turned herself in. Her excuse? That she has been harassed to the point of breaking. If the allegations are true, I could believe that it would be too much for a teenage girl to tolerate. Miss Porter's is an extremely prestigious boarding school, that is not only very selective but very expensive. It is hard to see how a student, who had distinguished herself until her senior year would have fallen from grace so fast unless she was shoved. I think she could have been shoved. I think she and her parents have a case. Your thoughts.

Miss Porter's School Sued Over Expulsion

By VANESSA DE LA TORRE

The Hartford Courant

December 10, 2008

Tatum Bass appeared to be thriving at the elite Miss Porter's School in Farmington.

The senior from South Carolina ran track and belonged to a Christian fellowship group. She traveled to Peru with other students to help renovate an orphanage and regularly made the honor roll. In a sign of the boarding student's social standing, her peers this year elected Bass to serve on the Nova Nine — a panel of nine seniors that leads the student body — as the student activities coordinator responsible for the prom and other events.

Then, over the past three months, Bass became a campus pariah and was expelled from the all-girls private school in November.

A federal lawsuit filed recently in U.S. District Court in New Haven contends that students in a "secret society" orchestrated a bullying campaign against Bass for her role early this school year in planning a multi-school prom. The "Oprichniki," as the group called itself according to the suit, apparently was named after the 16th-century Russian secret police that brutally eliminated the czar's enemies.

In the civil suit against Miss Porter's and its head of school, Katherine Windsor, Bass family attorneys say some girls, unhappy over the Nova Nine's plans to hold a joint prom with students from other schools, made Tatum Bass a target. The harassment weighed so heavily on Bass, according to the suit, that she missed about a week of school.

The suit says the school's decision last month to expel her was based largely on the unexcused absences and "violations of school rules." The suit also acknowledges that Bass was suspended from school this fall for cheating on a test.

But the lawsuit contends that Bass only cheated because she was frazzled by the harassment and that Windsor and other Miss Porter's officials neglected their duty to stop the abuse, despite repeated pleas for intervention from Bass and her parents.

School officials declined to comment on any aspect of the suit, including the existence of a Miss Porter's Oprichniki or school policies on bullying.

"It's very important for me to respect the privacy of the Bass family," Windsor said.

Classmates, the suit says, belittled Bass for having attention deficit disorder. They called her "********," yelled expletives at her at a school dance and taunted her — through "text messages, on Facebook and in person about being stupid and threatened to boycott the prom because of her," the suit says.

The family is seeking a judgment voiding the expulsion as improper, along with Bass' reinstatement at Miss Porter's as a student in good standing and a temporary injunction preventing the school from reporting the expulsion to colleges where Bass has applications pending. The lawsuit also seeks more than $75,000 in damages and legal fees.

Attorney Heather Spaide of the Bridgeport firm Cohen and Wolf P.C., which is representing Tatum Bass, did not return requests for comment.

The Oprichniki
The lawsuit singles out the girls in the Oprichniki as responsible for much of the harassment.

"Oprichniki members were at the forefront of taunting Tatum in class and advising others" about her ADD, the suit says.

Some students also circulated a petition within the senior class that sought to cancel out Bass' vote as a member of the Nova Nine in an attempt to derail plans for the multi-school prom, according to the lawsuit.

The original Oprichniki were ruthless loyalists to Ivan the Terrible. Dressed in black, they rode through the Russian countryside on black horses and carriages and were said to impale, drown, hang, mutilate and sometimes boil alive any suspected traitors. Their emblem — a dog's head and a broom — was a reminder of how efficient they were in sniffing and sweeping out the czar's enemies.

Bill Bass, president of an insurance agency, and Nina Bass, a pediatric psychiatrist, flew to Connecticut in late September to speak with Miss Porter's officials about the alleged bullying and its effect on their daughter, according to the suit. Nina Bass met with Windsor twice, the suit says, and after the trip repeatedly contacted Windsor and the school throughout October when the harassment didn't stop.

The family's attorneys contend that when Bass used her notes to finish an art history test on Oct. 27, it was a first-time cheating offense that the teen attributed to the emotional stress of weeks of bullying. The suit asserts that Bass was so disturbed by her own actions that she sought out Windsor in tears to confess. School officials, the suit says, then violated a Miss Porter's policy by alerting Vanderbilt University that Bass, an early decision applicant, had received a three-day suspension after that incident.

After serving the suspension off-campus, the suit says, Bass returned to her classes, but slept at a local hotel with her parents. More on-campus harassment made the environment "emotionally traumatic" for Bass, who sought medical treatment for anxiety and missed about a week of classes.

On Nov. 11, the suit says, a week before learning that school officials planned to expel her from Miss Porter's, Bill and Nina Bass went with their daughter to get a few things from her dorm room.

Inside, they found Tatum's belongings tossed in a corner, according to the suit. On her bed someone had placed a "For Rent" sign.

The parents may have a case for the bullying and the lack of discipline by school administrators, but it's not an excuse for the cheating. Even though she was the one who confessed, she still deserved a punishment for that.

Wrongly expelled for cheating? No. She cheated. It's against the rules.

One behavior doesn't cancle out the other; nor does it provide an excuse.

Harrassed, bullied, and terrorized? Probably. More than likely. It seems that type of behavior has gotten worse over the years. Seems weakly, we are hearing about a kid who is being cyberbullied, or just plain bullied.

Do the parents have a possible lawsuit? In Ct., I don't know. Here, they would because the cliche girls actions would be considered emotional/mental abuse & the school was supposed to be protecting as well as teaching.

She was punished, she had a 3 day suspension and had to move out of the dorm, so that is a done deal. However, it seems that they violated their own policy of notifying Vanderbilt University, who had taken her on an early acceptance, that she was suspended. That seems unnecessarily cruel when weighed against the entire circumstances. It also seems that treatment for anxiety is not an "unexcused" absence, which in part, is what they used to get rid of her. This school, like so many others depends upon students of wealthy parents who contribute to their endowments. I am wondering if they elected to throw one student under the bus rather than offend an entire group of "donors". The annual tuition, room and board at Miss Porters is about $42,000.

She cheated, so now she has to deal with the consequences of her actions.

That is all you took away from this girl's situation?
In the huge forest of harassment and bullying, apparetnly condoned by the school, all you can see is that one little twig of her cheating on a test?

WOW! I can't imagine what this poor girl went through. The school clearly dropped the ball on protecting this girl. She should not have been suspended.

I think they have a case, but bullying and harassment should be dealt with separately in legal terms from the cheating incident. I think it is inexcusable for the school administrators to ignore the pleas for help with bullying and harassment. That is a stand alone issue.

The punishment involving the cheating incident seems to be excessive given the girl's academic history, the fact that she confessed, and was remorseful. I think the undue stress was a factor in bad decision making. And I think the school administrators were wrong to contact the University.

Actually she couldn't be accepted yet, as Vanderbilt has not sent out their early acceptances yet, the decision date is December 15. So she applied there early decision, but she hasn't been admitted or denied yet. I guess the fear is that Vanderbilt won't take her now that they learned of this disciplinary problem. I wonder what "policy" the school violated-most college applications ask the high school to disclose disciplinary issues, and if anything changes the college is supposed to be notified. :confused3 Maybe they are saying that the college should have waited until a decision came from the college and then notify them later on?

I agree. She confessed. If she kept her mouth shut, no one would ever have known. They punished her for that...then they punished her again, twice.
I am wondering how her parents' donation to the school matched up with those donations of her harassers.

Bullying can be tortuous enough, I can't imagine it in a girls' boarding school.:sad2:

I guess we should be impressed that they used the historical reference of oprichniki to name themselves, though. They are well-educated bullies! :sad2:

I think the notorious group should all be expelled and their future Universities be notified of their behavior. Their futures should be the ones effected.

To put "Miss Porter's" in perspective;

Miss Porter's School, an exclusive college preparatory school for girls, is in Farmington. The school, whose buildings occupy much of the village center, is a significant historic and cultural institution in its own right. Founded in 1843 by educational reformer Sarah Porter, Miss Porter’s has long been one of the most selective preparatory schools for girls in the country. Famous alumni include Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Lilly Pulitzer and members of the Bush, Vanderbilt, and Rockefeller families.

Absolutely! :thumbsup2 Although I have to give them credit; they know their Russian history.

ITA. That was vindictive. By reporting her suspension to VU, they're trying to ruin her future. :sad2:

Thank you, I was going to say the same thing.

I guess we shall see what gets uncovered but bullying and harassment should never be tolerated or ignored.

Is this the same Porter family that were big wigs with Yale?

Maybe the bullying apple doesn't fall far from the tree?....

By confessing, she was actually proving her character. What a lesson...confess & have your life ruined, keep your mouth shut and you're freeeeeee.

Maybe the jerks who harassed her should be brought up on disciplinary charges and then ALSO have their colleges notified.
What has been the fall-out for these special little snow-flakes? Nothing.

agnes!
